Jeez, I thought that was Loch Modan at first.
Aikou Jul 9th 2010 3:06PM
Haha my same thoughts exactly!!!
Zhiva Jul 9th 2010 4:00PM
Exactly what I thought.
dokhidamo Jul 9th 2010 4:56PM
Yeah, but then I remembered it's d***r**e*.
Almoderate Jul 9th 2010 5:22PM
Here's another one who thought the same thing.

I swear this looks like its the other side of the damn in loch modan. LOL
Josin Jul 9th 2010 3:06PM
Agreed. I was like "Oh, Loch Modan! Wait... Uldum? What?"
Avan Jul 9th 2010 3:15PM
I can see why some may think it looked like Loch Modan at first, but I noticed that there was a tree in the foreground instead of plummeting death. The dam looks different, too.
That dam looks bland and unpolished. The geometry looks fine, but the textures don't look fitting for it.
Josin Jul 9th 2010 3:36PM
Hoping its still mostly untextured as an early Beta build.
Avan Jul 9th 2010 3:43PM
I'd like to think so, too. But, Blizzard hasn't released any screenshots of their unfinished stuff. They had standards before. That tells me that what we're looking at was deemed worthy enough to show off to the public, despite what it looks like. It's either the finished model/textures or they lowered their standards for media releases.

Textures look fine to me. They fit in well with the Egyptian architecture of Uldum. Large limestone blocks aren't going to have much texture as compared to wooden or brick buildings.
Avan Jul 9th 2010 4:06PM
In the past, Blizzard artists have used textures to bring detail to where the geometry is a bit plain, to make them look interesting. Most pillars in Wintergrasp and Ulduar are like this, where the pillars are simple six-sided columns, yet the texturing suggests that there are grooves in them like Roman archecture. It's a brilliant combination of texturing and geometry to create a distinctive aesthetic. I'm not seeing this on the dam, I'm just seeing some intricate geometry carrying the workload, and that just doesn't work.
The lighter limestone sections are bland. It looks too smooth for something surrounded by water. Speaking of water, the limestone under where the water comes out should be darker to suggest that water is actually come out. The entire structure just looks too new for it's supposed age, location, and purpose.

"The entire structure just looks too new for it's supposed age, location, and purpose"
That's what I want to see from a zone that's been magically hidden from the entire world. I want to feel like I'm being sent back in time to an age where these cool structures look brand new...not just more ruins like everywhere else.
To each his own, though.
Avan Jul 9th 2010 9:23PM
I'd take magically hidden to mean that the region can't be found, not that everything in it is somehow immune to nature. Besides, a weathered and eroded structure doesn't necessarily have to be ruins.
EaterOfBirds Jul 9th 2010 3:16PM
theres something cool about dams in general imo.
Vodkamartini Jul 9th 2010 3:51PM
This. I always dug the Loch Modan and water wheel structure in Stonetalon Mountains, and thought they had the best views in WoW (not a lot of people know about the latter it seems).
I always wanted a battlegrounds area set with these two locations, a dam-buster mission a la Strand of the Ancients, too.

Hyjal/Vashj'ir > Deepholm > Uldum > Twilight Highlands.
So Uldum should be around 83-84 I suppose. Right now there's an invisible wall in the beta build preventing us from entering there. :(

This looks terrible. Looks like I am looking at Everquest from years ago. Needs a lot of work. The graphics dont match the WoW universe. Doesn't flow with other in game graphics
zdave Jul 9th 2010 4:02PM
i agree the dam needs some detail work but it's not -that- bad. especially the changes to the water graphics. that shit looks amazing.
