Insider Trader: Engineering your Cataclysm

Of course, the staple engineering item ever since the Burning Crusade have been helmets and goggles. The quality of these items were so exceptional that you could see enterprising engineers wearing them deep into each expansion. The goggles possess fantastic stats customized to the engineer's specific raid role and they're darn styling, too. What's not to love?
- Reinforced Bio-Optic Killshades Plate gear for melee.DPS
- Specialized Bio-Optic Killshades Plate gear for holy pallies
- Deadly Bio-Optic Killshades Mail goggles for physical DPS
- Energized Bio-Optic Killshades Spell mail for shamans
- Agile Bio-Optic Killshades Leather physical DPS
- Camoflauge Bio-Optic Killshades Leather for spell users
- Lightweight Bio-Optic Killshades Cloth spell gear
Engineer-only enhancements
But Mike, you ask, what about the rest of the engineer-only enhancements? Well, let's take a look below.
- Gnome-Matic Phase Fingers Permanently attaches gnome-matic phase finger technology to a pair of gloves, allowing a skilled engineer to increase their haste rating by 340 for 12 sec. The gloves can only be activated every minute.
- Quickflip Deflection Plates Permanently attaches quickflip deflection plates onto gloves, allowing you to increase your armor by 1500 for 12 sec. Gloves can only be activated once every minute. Attaching the armor webbing causes the gloves to become soulbound. An Engineering skill of 500 is required to keep the webbing active.
- Tazik Shocker Permanently attaches a tazik shocker to your gloves, allowing a skilled engineer to deal 1654 to 2020 nature damage to an enemy at long range. The shocker can only be used once every 45 sec. Can only be used on the engineer's gloves, and doing so will cause them to become soulbound.
- Spinal Healing Injector Permanently attaches a specialized injector kit to your belt, allowing you to inject a Mythical Healing Potion directly into your bloodstream for increased effect. Only a skilled engineer can activate the modified belt. Can only be attached to your own belt, and doing so causes the belt to become soulbound.
- Z50 Mana Gulper Permanently attaches a specialized injector kit to your belt, allowing you to power-drink a Mythical Mana Potion for increased effect. Only a skilled engineer can activate the modified belt. Can only be attached to your own belt, and doing so causes the belt to become soulbound.
The Tazik Shocker will be interesting. Remember, for the most part, it's hard to evaluate numbers right now. Since the current damage from Lightning Generator and other effects are in the same range, will the final damage be a lot? Is it nothing? Is it game breaking? Who the hell knows. Maybe melee classes will worship this enchant for the flexibility of a ranged attack, or perhaps we'll mock its meaningless amount of damage. The mana gulper and healing injector are nice little bonuses for the engineer who wants their mana or health potions attached to their belt.
Cogs and pumps: the future!
The other thing that Boubouille has dug up is the new kind of gem socket called "Hydraulics/Cogwheels socket." I think our little steampunk want-to-be engineers have figured out how to add power to armor. This socket seems to function like a gem socket in which only two items can be placed: cogwheels or hydraulic pumps. Again, it's beta, so we don't know much about how this addition will work. But the new engineering-socket would definitely allow engineers to keep parity with the other professions in terms of crafter-bonus.
The bonuses themselves are below, divided by whether it's a hydraulic or a cogwheel.
Cogwheels
- Fractured Cogwheel - +132 Mastery Rating
- Quick Cogwheel - +132 Haste Rating
- Smooth Cogwheel - +132 Critical Strike Rating
- Subtle Cogwheel - +132 Dodge Rating
- Flashing Hydraulic Pump - +132 Parry Rating
- Precise Hydraulic Pump - +132 Expertise Rating
- Rigid Hydraulic Pump - +132 Hit Rating
- Sparkling Hydraulic Pump - +132 Spirit

All of this sound awesome. I'll be leveling up Engineering to the max for the first time once Cataclysm hits, and if this means my NE fire mage can buff up her haste, add fancy mechanicals to her gear, and look badass in goggles while doing it, I'm all for it. All freakin' for it. Can't wait.
Now, all I need is for there to be a way for Alliance characters to get some version of the goblin roadster mount, like the Brewfest Kodo. Please, Blizzard, I'm begging you.... ^_^
Halgrimur Jul 12th 2010 9:12PM
Firstly, I think the roadster is only for the Goblin Starting Area lvls 1-5, you have to hand it over when you escape the island anyways.
Secondly...Allies just don't have that "Awesome" factor that is needed for driving a roadster. They just aren't "cool" enough. Fact!
MusedMoose Jul 12th 2010 9:17PM
@ Halgrimur -
You may be right, though with all due respect, I hope you're not. I've seen the vids on Youtube of the goblin car in Kezan. However, that doesn't look like the roadster with the massive spiked rear wheels that was shown in the Cataclysm concept art. That's the one I'm hoping to get a hold of eventually:

As for the Allies not being cool enough to ride a roadster... I'd love to say otherwise, but I have to concede that point. Especially since I want one for a night elf. *grin*
Chubz Jul 12th 2010 9:27PM
What is it with Ally always QQing bout wanting horde mounts? If you want a Kodo,Raptor or a hot rod then make a flippin' hordey!
Halgrimur Jul 12th 2010 9:28PM
I'm basing my assumptions on the Goblin Starting Area video made by TotalBiscuit (http://www.youtube.com/user/TotalHalibut, if you aren't afraid of ***SPOILERS***). It looked pretty much exactly like the model that was datamined and posted on MMO-Champ before the NDA descended. It would be a darn shame if they didn't let races other than Goblin use it, and if they let Horde have, they'd probably have to give it to Allies too, or the QQ would be endless.
My secret dream is an Invincible-style Warlock only Demon-Horse Flying-Mount thing...SOOO GONNA HAPPEN
MusedMoose Jul 12th 2010 9:34PM
@ Chubs - I play Alliance because my friends play Alliance. It's not as simple as you're assuming it is - I refuse to switch because they wouldn't. And I'm not QQing, just saying that I hope there's a way to get one. As an engineer, it'd be great for my future mage to have all the mechanical-type mounts.
...except the flying mechanical gnome head from Yogg-Saron. That just ain't happening for me. @_@
@ Halgrimur - it's hard to say, really; we'll have to wait until the new racial mounts are unleashed on the beta to know for sure. And I'm with you, still hoping for class-based mounts for all classes.

Also: apologies for spelling your name wrong, Chubz. WTB edit button. -_-

Gnomes are cool enough. They ride unstable 2-legged smoke-pouring mechanical chickens from a young age. Goblins drive a very stable 4-wheeled car, far less dangerous. Anything goblins can do, gnomes can do better!
Halgrimur Jul 12th 2010 10:10PM
How are gnomes cool?! They, at best, sponge off the Dwarves leftover mediocrity. Gnomes are quite obviously the worst race in WoW and I personally try to eradicate as many as i can. They are the virus on the screen of the average WoW player...And I'm sure we all KNOW what NEEDS to be DONE with the vermin. I just hope that that pathetic Wrynn guy frees Gnomergan and uses it to hold all gnomes for additional questioning.
zdave Jul 12th 2010 11:29PM
@ Halgrimur - when you were a kid, did a strange gnome in the park have something in his pants for you? you seem to have a deep hatred based on...purely nothing. and i don't mean nothing like - "what did you do yesterday?", "nothing" - kind of nothing. i mean really literally empty space nothing.
SR Jul 13th 2010 2:39AM
Because joining what EVERYONE thinks is COOL AND AWESOME is always going to make you awesome, too! Right? Right?
Just because your faction doesn't pillage and deforest and plague and steal from our enemies, it doesn't mean we don't belong in a faction with nobility, rationality, logic, and the first faction-only mount.
/end faction quarrel nonsense
Gothia Jul 13th 2010 3:36AM
While I enjoy the childish faction banter, I think that you folks need to play both factions including every race to get a real understanding the game, your class, and faction differences. How can you speak troll if you have never done da voodoo shuffle or feel the teehee demoralization of your foes if you have never worn pink pigtails. Cataclysm will change everything so the time is now to check out these rich and detailed races.
@ Halgrimur - are you Horde Tough? You haven't lived until you have chopped down an Orc in a blurr of pink pigtails. Gnomeregan beckons you - come check us out - WE ARE COOL.
loop_not_defined Jul 12th 2010 9:16PM
I've been collecting and posting this stuff for some time, and had this all posted on MMO-Champion forums (except the gems, which don't have any associated spells atm) as soon as the NDA lifted.
Ain't get no respec'. /sadface

Something i posted on the forums a while ago, linked to the google cache since the post seems to be deleted. Copy and pasted here...
An open letter to Blizzard's Cataclysm profession developers on behalf of engineers everywhere.
If there is one thing I could ask regarding professions in the expansion, please, PLEASE do something with goggles.
I am Madoran's Realm First Grand Master Engineer, and have every intention of being the Realm First Illustrious Engineer. I have been an engineer since about level 10, more than three years ago. And since that time, I've worn NOTHING but goggles, any time I could craft new ones, on they went. Aside from my fishing hat that I don for my fishing daily and the occasional holiday helm, I've never worn anything else. My character pane just doesn't look right without them. Because of this, despite being a top tier raider, i still feel restricted to an, although spiffy looking and well itemized, ilvl200 helm (no luck with Mimiron's Flight Goggles). I have one slot left in my “Epic” achievement, that I wont see filled until I can craft my ilvl300 goggles at level 81.
Now obviously nine new goggle recipes for every new tier to cover every class and spec would be nice, its probably too much to ask for. And the BC situation with first and final tier items is also less than desirable. Now assuming you guys are following suit and giving us some sweet epic ilvl300 goggles at level 81 (since we got some at 62, eventually, and then 72), I propose a few relatively simple ideas to keep us in goggles all we want.
As demonstrated by the Mind Amplification Dish, for a short while, item enhancements can also have a cosmetic component.
One possibility would be for engineers to be able to add two gem sockets to their helms, NOT stacking with other enhancements, and would also change any helm into goggles. This would probably be pretty imbalanced though, depending on what profession bonuses you have planned for everyone in the expansion.
A second and probably better idea would be to have a 100% cosmetic helm enchant that WOULD stack with arcanums. This could even be relatively expensive, say two rare gems and 4 uncommon gems (for the lenses on the standard goggle model) and a piece or two of rare leather. You could even take it a step further and have six different color options using red/green/blue etc gems.
I know most engineers have a similar attachment to their headgear and bemoan the day they get a helm that's better than their goggles. I think this one small thing would make most of us extremely happy. But, even if these changes don't become a reality, I'll still proudly wear my Deathblow X9001 Weakness Spectralizers until level 86.

I'm willing to bet that the Engineer-only gems at the bottom are only going to fit in the Goggles themselves, therefore giving them quite a bit more life than the normal piece of gear, and possibly longer if they give us better cogs and hydrolic pumps to put in them.
That said, I bet Gnomish engineers will get Cogs, and Goblins Hydrolics. That way, you have to market your cogs/hydrolics to the other engineering type.
Crazyates Jul 12th 2010 10:25PM
How cool would it be if those two extra "Gem" slots changed the color of the lenses on the goggles, depending on what "Gems" you put in them?
Want a pair of red goggled? use the Subtle Cogwheel and the Flashing Hydraulic Pump. Want a yellow pair? Use the haste/expertise set.
Jason Jul 13th 2010 10:20AM
They have said that all profession specializations are going away in Cataclysm. No more Gnomish or Goblin engineering. Same goes for BS, LW, Tailoring and Alchemy professions.
Amaxe-1 Jul 13th 2010 12:58PM
So what happens to the specialization recipes already in game?
Molly Jul 12th 2010 9:29PM
Hm, interesting that the Shocker is a glove enchant.
Magma Jul 12th 2010 9:35PM
Ahaha! I see what you did there.
