Around Azeroth Beta Edition: The gulf between us
This is a shot of the new chasm separating the Barrens into two -- wait, it's not? It's the Badlands and Loch Modan? Oh yeah, there's the entrance to Uldaman, which is understandably easy to miss since no one ever goes there. (Thanks to Darius of <Stormwatch> on Moon Guard (US-H) for the pic!)
Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as emailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word "Azeroth" in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use Alt Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards, Val'kyr on mounts or pictures of the Ninja Turtles in Dalaran. Older screenshots can be found here.

Guess that means we wont be able to go into Uldaman anymore?
Thorzon Jul 14th 2010 10:32AM
Actually, you can get into Uldaman just fine. When I was going to head in there, I expected to tunnel to be blocked off by some rubble, but contrary to my belief, everything seams to be in place.

I wonder if there are ramps in the terrain to get out of those chasms should a wandering level 12 newbie accidentally fall in...
havitech Jul 14th 2010 10:39AM
I think it would be really neat if they made the chasm a void, like the edge of Outland.
Retro Jul 14th 2010 10:09AM
So much for less obnoxious transitions between zones. They couldn't come up with some kind of transitional terrain? It's just... a giant chasm with two distinctive terrain types on each side... I bet the sky still changes radically too.
A minor gripe, but you'd think that while they're fixing things, they'd realize how absurd this looks, especially from the air.
Luke Chaplin Jul 14th 2010 10:19AM
I couldn't agree more,
Sadly, smoothing the transition from one area to another was one of the things I was looking most forward to... I hope they haven't done this between every zone
jabbaprime Jul 14th 2010 10:26AM
Do people really have to complain about every single thing? there are more than 20 zones so what if there is a big chasm between bandlands and lochmodan and they have completely different tiles, some zones are more similar like ashenvale and its sister regions except for the barrens.
Have you even been to outland? there are the biggest color translations ever, HFP -> Zangermarsh or Blades Edge to Nether and its cool as its boring to see the same tile everywhere.
If you are searching for something realistic then am afraid wow is not for you, else explain to me how all deadbosses are making a comeback in future raids ^^

Woe betide anyone voice "minor gripes" about a game they play while jabbaprime's around, because s/he will leap into action, decrying them for complaining about "every little thing", and then tenuously linking geographical realism to narrative realism.
That's you told, Retro and Luke!

Back in college, I was a geology major (but then I switched to English - lol). With all this Cataclysm stuff happening, I think about my classes and compare reality to this fantasy world.
I have to constantly remind myself that this is just a game. It's just a game. It's not the real world.
arcaneterror Jul 14th 2010 12:38PM
Remember - Azeroth as we see it in game is vastly scaled down. What takes a couple minutes in game takes days or weeks in the backstory. The transitions between areas is assuredly less drastic in the lore. Also, the world was built by god-like beings, shown to be able to create tropical paradises in deserts and the arctic, so if all else fails, a wizard did it.

I completely agree!
The one thing that instantly bothered me in the expansions, is the sudden extreme change between zones. I like the fact Old Vanilla Azeroth shows you a gradual change in environment, as you walk through each of them.

@mtsadowski: I'm a biology major and I have to do the same thing whenever I see hybrid races, like half orc/half humans (they're from different planets.. what are the chances they have compatible genetic codes?). The worst offender is, of course, the 1/2 human, 1/4 draenei 1/4 orc Med'an.
Hybrids are just a fantasy archetype. Hybrids are just a fantasy archetype. Hybrids are just a fantasy archetype......

I guess that was their solution to fixing the extremely unsmooth transition from the tan color of the rocks in loch vs the red in barrens so that you dont see it from the air when flying in azeroth.
graphite Jul 14th 2010 10:22AM
meant badlands not barrens
kabshiel Jul 14th 2010 11:42AM
It's actually their solution to keeping level 10 characters from wandering into a higher level zone.
Caz Jul 14th 2010 10:15AM
Uldaman was the first dungeon I ever ran after joining a guild. Fun times!
Cetha Jul 14th 2010 10:18AM
this reminds me how fantastic it's going to be to fly in Azeroth. so excited.
wllmsgame Jul 14th 2010 10:21AM
Pipe up if your going to spend the first hour of cataclysm just flying in those chasms on your flying mount.
Joshua Przygocki Jul 14th 2010 10:41AM
Will my drake fit? That is the question.
Oh well Flight form ftw.
