The Queue: I like pie

Welcome back to The Queue, WoW.com's daily Q&A column where the WoW.com team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Anne Stickney will be your host today.
Today's Queue is brought to you by pie. Blueberry pie. Because unlike Father's Day cakes, pie does not melt in the heat. Instead, it is delicious.
There will be Cataclysm spoilers behind the cut.
Gundehar asks:
"Regarding Sully Balloo's Letter, the quest that is probably the most hidden Easter egg of quests, exactly how did the original vanilla players of WoW come to discover that quest in the first place? Was it a carefully placed hint from a Blizz employee? Divine providence by way of a chance encounter of a lost player, leading to a massive word-of-mouth campaign?"
I don't know about anyone else, but I fell off the bridge attempting to get away from dwarves in the area and upon hitting the water and not dying, discovered the quest. These days it's almost impossible to find, as the letter that starts the quest doesn't have an exclamation point over it -- so you really do have to be looking for it to realize it's there. As far as other out-of-the-way quests, I find that most Horde players seem to miss the quest Nothing But The Truth, mostly because it's in an out-of-the-way location in an Alliance zone. For both factions, there's the quest Augustus' Receipt Book, which starts in a very out-of-the-way location in Eastern Plaguelands. For Alliance players, a lot of low-level night elves probably don't even notice the existence of the quest Mist, as the cat is, again, fairly out of the way. I'm sure there are plenty others; feel free to leave a note in the comments if you have another!
Stormscythe378 asks:
"What is the meaning of the female Night Elf facial tattoos? Is it a rite of passage for the youngsters when they are of age? Or is it simply a cosmetic thing and they get them just because they are awesome looking?"
Well if their parents had just let them go to Tahoe instead of throwing a fit over the whole idea (I mean come on, Becky's parents were totally going to chaperone and everything, promise), then maybe they wouldn't have been bored while everyone else was gone having fun and besides, they're 18, it's not like they're kids anymore ...
But seriously, in the novel Stormrage, it's mentioned that the tattoos are some sort of rite of passage. Whether it's a coming of age rite of passage, a successful first hunt rite of passage, or a "Daddy finally gave me the keys to the Camaro -- let's go" rite of passage has not been defined.
Mixer asks:
"Have they made any mention of how they will handle people that do not purchase Cata interacting with people that own Cata in the old world?"
Yes. Repeatedly. If you do not purchase the Cataclysm expansion, you will still see all of the old world changes. You simply won't be able to play goblins or worgen, or access any areas that are higher than the expansion you have purchased. So if you're still playing vanilla, you're going to be restricted to level 60 content. The Burning Crusade, level 70. Wrath, level 80. You'll see the world change around you, the leveling quests will change for you, but you won't be able to go any higher than whatever expansion you're currently playing.
Dreamstorm asks:
"What is going to happen to our flight points in Cataclysm? Will we have to walk around (or fly for 60+) to all the new towns to get the flight points or will they be retroactively given if we have one in that zone (ie: Thousand Needles' Freewind Post flight point being changed to that big goblin ship in the new shimmering flats)?"
So far in the beta, you retain flight paths for the zones you already have flight paths in. If the flight path location has changed, it's still there on the flight map for you. However, any new flight paths that have been added for any new cities will not be available to you until you go find them -- like when they added the additional flight paths in Western Plaguelands.
Drekten asked:
"What is wrong with the default UI?"
It doesn't know, but it spends many long, lonely Saturday nights sadly staring at itself in the mirror asking that very same question.

Pecan!!
moirafae Jul 14th 2010 7:56PM
Pecan is indubitably the best pie. Save for maybe pumpkin. Or a hybrid pumpkin-pecan ... I am making myself hungry now. MUST FIND PIE.
Also, pie is waaaay better than cake. It's a true and honest fact. There's even scientific research to prove it: http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/03/pie-verus-cake-scientific-approach.html

What's the good word these days on racial powers and features? Have the dwarves gotten something to replace Find Treasure yet?
Ilmyrn Jul 14th 2010 11:11AM
I know they were kicking around the idea of linking it to Archaelogy somehow, though that was when Archaelogy was how you progressed down the Path of the Titans. Since Path's been scrapped , they may have changed that.
Draelan Jul 14th 2010 2:42PM
Well, Archaeology still exists, given that they're the founders of the Explorer's League, and the fact that Find Treasure really can't get much more useless than it is now, I hope they still go through with it. I mean, a racial boosting a secondary skill is still better than a racial for finding nearly non-existent treasure chests.
fearthefireblade Jul 14th 2010 7:45PM
Answer his question. I'm about to race change and would like to know if they've touched the racials.

"... you won't be able to go any higher than whatever expansion you're currently playing ..."
Does that mean that there are loading screens to enter those areas?
flawless Jul 14th 2010 12:18PM
The portal to Ghostlands, and the boats to Azuremyst/Northrend will still prevent any players that don't have BC/Wrath from entering those areas. I'm guessing most of the transitions to Cataclysm-only areas will be handled similarly, though I'm not sure what they'll do about Gilneas.
Atomic_explode Jul 14th 2010 12:32PM
There aren't any loading screens, but the areas have other barriers that could probably add invisible walls to the unexpanded.
