Ghostcrawler -- A day in the life of a Blizzard designerMost of the day is spent in communication of some sort. We'll have formal meetings where we review a current talent tree. We have just tons and tons of discussions of "Hey, guys, I had an idea," or "Hey, I can't solve this problem. Any thoughts?" We do work quite closely with the programmers implementing things like the new talent UI or the new scaling spell model. We also work closely with the artists coming up with new spell visuals. Our QA department is constantly trying to sort through what the design of the moment is, and they do a great job of triaging the totally broken things from the "fix this before we ship" things. The community team brings us concerns that they have seen on the forums or from their interactions with players. This is particularly true for the non-English forums, because my non-English for one is sadly lacking. History geek that I am, I studied Ancient Greek in college, which serves me about as well in day to day life as you probably imagine.
GC's got friends in every town and village from here to the Sudan. He speaks a dozen languages, knows every local custom. He'll blend in -- disappear -- you'll never see him again. With any luck... he's got the Grail already.
GC: Does anyone here speak English? Or even Ancient Greek?
There aren't many typical days. Sometimes we will spend literally hours discussing one problem. The last few days it has been the paladin rotations. We'll throw things on white boards, send out some ideas to guys not actually in the office, try out some stuff in game to see how it feels, and get feedback from anyone who has recently run one of the new dungeons or tried a new BG. We interact a lot with the community outside of the building, visibly on forums like this one, but through email, IRC and even in game. There are a lot of excellent PvP and PvE players with whom I regularly correspond, and I want to call out any of you reading this and thank you publically.
Overall the environment is very collaborative. The team as a whole (by which I mean the artists, programmers, producers and everyone else) don't get enough credit for the design decisions that go into the game. In many cases, my guys are just the implementers, but the ideas and feedback come from everyone working on WoW.

Ghostcrawler -- Lightwell planIn the current beta build (or possibly the next one), clicking Lightwell no longer switches your target to it. That was one of the changes we've been waiting for to reevaluate the talent. (Enemies can still target it normally.)
Ghostcrawler -- Paladin talent trees in CataclysmImp Dev Aura is dead.
Reactive Judgements is also dead.
I'm going to regret saying this, but the paladin trees are the most changed in the game. There are only a few of the current beta talents that survived the, um, cleansing.

"In which Ghostcrawler (lead systems designer) says he'll regret something ... but in reality, he's laughing about it on his yacht."
a yacht fueled by our tears, no doubt.

A yacht fueled by tears? Don't be ridiculous.
The yacht FLOATS on tears. It is POWERED by the wind of eleven million sobbing sighs.

So... powered by wailing and steered by the gnashing of teeth?
Blayze Jul 16th 2010 7:25AM
And if you haven't got teeth, then teeth will be provided, oh yes.

A thought just occurred to me: When Blizz decides to finally put WoW down (hopefully years from now) it *must* have a world-ending event of some kind.
The final boss, that rampages across Azeroth, destroying everything, has got to be named Ghostcrawler. The would be the ultimate shared "inside joke" with the subscriber base, the final tribute, and a cathartic target, all rolled into one. One of his attacks has to be "Summon Pony Stampede".
I'd be laughing all the way to the end.
Orisi Jul 16th 2010 9:09AM
In reality, Hogger will ride in on a pony and begin slaughtering everyone, only for Azeroth to band together and finall destroy him, before Ghostcrawler's Yacht of Tears sails into the maelstrom and causes a... Cataclysmic explosion... but more Cataclysmic... if you get me :S

I welcome the Lightwell change. I've only been able to get caster DPS to click on it, and they only manage to do so between spellcasts. They'll start up a spell, click it, and then switch back to their target before queueing the next spell up.
I do not welcome the change they made so that it's not required for priests to take it to get Chakra. From what the devs keep saying, the raid environment in Cataclysm will be perfect for Lightwell to shine. It's clear that the haters don't even understand how Lightwell works, they just think they know it's bad.

In the right fight, I love Lightwell (Gluth being my favorite fight for it). Fixing the problem with the target change will make me love it even more.
love,

Why don't they just do as the Priest Lightwell in ToC5 ......
make it floor Auto healing mobs around it ....
whould have been so mutch nicer
Ricohardt Jul 16th 2010 6:18AM
2 holy priests on Thaddius could be awesome. Unless the wells take a charge. Hmm.
fearthefireblade Jul 16th 2010 6:36AM
Let's not forget, for as bad of a PvE spell as it is, it's actually a fantastic PvP spell. Your arena teammates will always click your lightwell.
Rakah Jul 16th 2010 7:14AM
and how many pvp holy priests do you bump into these days?
Avan Jul 19th 2010 3:47PM
@Noctune:
Those exist already. It's called Healing Stream Totem.
The ToC Fountain of Light is an absolutely HORRIBLE design for Lightwell to go. It only looks impressive because it shoots sparks out to heal people. Again, that's a totem. But what you probably aren't noticing, is how it's shooting sparks at everything. The dead, the horses that are immune to healing, mobs that are at full health... It's a lot of wasted healing. It's a horrible design and IT'S A TOTEM. Shamans are the totem droppers, not priests.
Lightwell does a LOT of healing for the amount of mana (about 714 if I recall) it takes to cast it. One click is worth over 10k healing. If it was turned into a totem (NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.) then the trade-off would be either a higher mana cost, or a severe decrease in the amount of healing it does. Either way, it's bad for the spell. I would rather see it be removed than see it be dumbed down for bad, incompetent priests and their bad, incompetent raids.

anyone else think corey stockton looks like the youngest brother from malcolm in the middle?

Every Flippin' expansion (although usually for the better, so don't stop the love GC - we'll bitch at first, then enjoy a brief period of being completely OP, then with some hard nerfing - still be envied by other healers, tanks and DPSers at the end!)
Byar Jul 16th 2010 2:09AM
Im just glad pallys are getting some attention earlier than a week before release
Possum Jul 16th 2010 2:32AM
If you mean the one in game some people do like it. It just needs some more options like getting rid of the 'friends of friends can see you' option and an "offline" option for when you're playing an alt.
Artificial Jul 16th 2010 3:07AM
I don't think RealID is even in GC's area. He's in charge of the game mechanics. RealID has no impact on your rotation, talents, mana regen rate, or anything like that...
Fletcher Jul 16th 2010 3:38AM
I'm not sure why this was voted down - it's a reasonable comment, and lays out Lightwell's faults pretty well. Myself, I think that making Lightwell not retarget you will help a lot, but it still seems like a very situational thing. I can see warlocks loving it though.
