Sorry, Adam. I've thought long and hard about this.
Overall, with very limited exceptions, I think I gotta go with pie.
Blueberry, cherry, boysenberry, apple, pumpkin, strawberry, rhubarb, mincemeat, french silk, key lime, lemon meringue, turtle, banana cream... their power is unmistakable.
But then, in addition to the "sweet" pies, you have to consider the "savory" pies - chicken pot pie, steak pot pie, pork pie, Shepherd's pie... and all the stuff that doesn't even have pie in the name, like crisps, crumbles, calzones, quiches, empanadas... pie is an unstoppable force, encompassing much more than we realize.
On the other hand, pineapple upside-down cake is pretty OK, too.

Finally someone mentioned lemon meringue pie!
I have to agree with you, Grovin, for all the reasons you mentioned.
Also, cake is pretty good and there are some wonderful varieties out there, but there is also one of the greatest culinary travesties of all time in the cake category: Red Velvet Cake. This steaming PoS (not Pit of Sauron, btw) is enough to single-handedly drag down all cakes everywhere merely by association.

There you'll sample Mrs. Lovett's meat pies, savory and sweet pies, as you'll see!
You who eat pies, Mrs. Lovett's meat pies conjure up the treat pies used to be!
