Phat Loot Phriday: Poisonfire Greatsword

Throgg looked up from where he'd been busily grooming his monobrow with his tongue. "What you mean, little belfling?"
"You have a different sword again," Lolegolas said. He tossed his flowing locks over his shoulder, revealing the glittering perfection of his chest. "You just had Kliklak's and now ... this."
"Ah, yes," Throgg grunted. "It is sword with Mastery on it, as stat. Since it no longer part of talents, I thought it must be very important to have on sword. The Poisonfire Greatsword has much Mastery! Make Throgg strong!"
"Hm, of course," Lolegolas said. "I will say that this sword seems rather magnificent. It appeals to my more savage aesthetic. It's all rough and course and manly."
"Right," Throgg said. "I got it for infiltrating a camp in the beta. Throgg is very clever, and was given the Poisonfire Greatsword as a reward."
"Do you remember anything about the lore of the quest?" Lolegolas asked. The roleplayer in him was coming out, and the blood elf was getting very excited.
Throgg's unibrow furrowed in confusion. "Lore? What? "
"You know," the blonde replied. "The lore. The story."
"Story is," Throgg answered with finality, "I got this awesome sword."

Just throwing in my support for the writing style. It reminds me of the amsterdam cop series, of all things.

That's a pretty good story, Throgg.
I didn't see that plot twist and the climax was epic.
krusty_burger Jul 17th 2010 12:16AM
pretty sure kliklak's had mastery.
yep.
krusty_burger Jul 17th 2010 12:18AM

I may have snorted when I read the last line of very clever Throgg's story.

I'd be quite happy if every Phat Loot Phriday from here on out continued the exciting saga of Throgg, Lolegolas and their loot

I love this two. LOVE. THEM.
They are like the Asric and Jadaar of WoW.com
Eddy Jul 17th 2010 12:58AM
...well, only if they make out when we're not watching.
Prances in Underpantss Jul 17th 2010 5:19AM
Whatever happened to Jasric and Adaar?
Possum Jul 17th 2010 6:41AM
But when are they going to get together!
Grubba Jul 17th 2010 2:58PM
This article got a hundred times more fun to read when they showed up to start talking about their stuff. It's gone from one of the least interesting columns here to one of my favorites. Keep up the good work!
Zanathos Jul 17th 2010 3:00PM
Jasric and Adaar migrated from the sewers to the argent tournament grounds and I believe they're still up there
slythwolf Jul 18th 2010 12:48AM
Yeah, they're by the refreshment tent getting drunk and talking about how they TOTALLY COULD kick ass in the actual tournament but they'll just stay here for a little while longer...

It's hard for me to get excited about Cataclysm weapons, especially with Mastery still being such an abstract notion.
Natsumi Jul 17th 2010 1:26AM
Think of it as the best stat ever, no matter what spec you are.
If you DPS, it makes you DPS better.
If you Heal, it makes you Heal better.
if you Tank, it makes you not die better.
Abstract or not, it's an incredibly useful stat. Also, unlike any other green stat (in Cata), it has no cap.
Hit: Caps out.
Crit: Believe it or not, this also caps out.
Haste: You better believe it caps out.
Dodge/Parry/Block: They cap out too, though it's neigh Impossible, the cap is still 100%.
Expertise: caps for DPS quickly, for tanks not so quickly, but it still caps.
Resilience: Yup, even this caps, ask anyone that seriously does Arenas.
So, when you max out on other stats, you can then stack Mastery. I'm waiting for the Arms Warrior gear that you stack Mastery until the point when you have over 100% chance to proc extra swings. Only when an Arms Warrior insta-gibz a clothie will they nerf this mysterious new stat, love it while you can.
Hih Jul 17th 2010 9:39AM
Nat, people are really only hitting caps on crit and haste because of generous talents and overinflated gear levels.
GC has stated both that they had to inflate gear levels above what they had originally intended to incentivize hard modes, and that they have already planned out what Deathwing's drops will look like. Don't expect to cap anything but hit or expertise unless you really try to cap something out by stacking that stat on every piece of gear and reforging as much of the other stats off as you can.
I'm not trying to belittle mastery as I'm sure it will be a fine stat (even if I am disappointed with Resto Druid's effect), just a little correction is all.
Nick S Jul 17th 2010 11:25AM
My issue with Mastery is that you don't know what it does independent of other information: you have to know what spec you're using the item for before you have any idea what the value of Mastery is.
slythwolf Jul 18th 2010 12:50AM
Correction: you *choose* your spec based on what you want Mastery to *be*.

Wait, wait.....according to wowhead (following the swords link), this is a reward from the quest Flames from Above. Also according to wowhead's quest page, this is a ROGUE CLASS quest! This class quest rewards,
1. a cloth caster belt
2. mail hunter/enhancement legs
3. a 2h strength sword
Do these quest rewards make sense for a rogue?
