We have one rule, for looting and everything else: "Don't be an ass." (Worded slightly more strongly than that. :P)It seems to work out quite well, as every time anybody finds a new way to be an ass, it's instantly and retroactively covered by the rule.

I was in a guild once that had a loot system like this one. "Don't be a jerk". The problem was that when we had someone do something that was borderline...Here's the situation. This new raid gets released (ZG). We're a casual guild (mostly UBRS/LBRS/Scholo/Strat). We've got easily enough members geared to take it on. We all get together on Friday nights to do it. The raid resets twice each week. Some of our members start running it a second time with another group of people at like 3am (dang college kids), then they run it with us later in the week.As a result, they've got twice the chances at the loot in there. Compounding this is the fact that their other group is a bit more hardcore and can clear the whole place while we're working on downing one new boss per week.So we finally make it to the Raptor boss. 25 man raid, about 9 people in the raid are from the night group. We take him out, and the offhand sword drops. Our fury warrior and two rogues are giddy. This is a huge upgrade for all three of them. Only... The guild's hunter wants to roll on it too. He's been running the night raids and just came along for the opportunity to roll on the offhand warblade because he has the mainhand from Hakkar. Oooh, drama. 14 members of the raid think he's being a jerk for rolling. The melee classes really need the DPS from the weapon as well as it's stats. He's just going to get a set and stats from it. The other 9 think he's totally in the right, he's there, he took down the boss, he's got the other half of the set, you should all pass him the warblade. Our RL said, OK... We didn't discuss this before hand so he gets a roll. He wins the blade and keeps it. But now the guild is divided. Half of the guild thinks that this was a jerky thing to do and the other half thinks that he was totally right...This is where the "don't be a jerk" falls apart. The guild split. Half the guild gquit over this one loot roll because the rule just totally failed the guild. Then, the half of the guild that stayed around picked the worst system I've ever heard of...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't ZG 20 man? Interesting story though. ;)

Right you are. It was a 20 man which made the 9 to 11 ratio even closer. I remember the nine really well because they started up their new guild together and I remember thinking that nine people would never make a raiding guild work. : )
