The Queue: EVE

I made an "oops" and missed out on this past weekend's edition of WRUP, so what better place is there to blather on about what I did this past weekend than The Queue? There is none, so here I go! I decided to check out EVE Online this past weekend and I was utterly shocked at how many other WoW players there were in the rookie areas of the game. Heck, they even had names like TheAshbringer and Kaelthas Starstrider. I'm really curious whether the overwhelming number of former WoW players is normal for EVE or if it's a recent thing. It's always interesting to see just how many WoW players there are in other MMOs.
Now with that out of the way, on with the show!
TAD asked:
"Have the level 20-60 quests in the newly-revamped Old World been updated with the newer mechanics brought in with BC and WotLK? Bombing missions, vehicles, etc. I know there's some of that in the new starting zones, but I wonder if it's been extended to the rest of the game up to Outland."
Those mechanics aren't used as heavily as they are in Northrend, but they most certainly are there in the old world. Every single zone has received some sort of attention in Cataclysm, and many zones have received complete rebuilds from the ground up. Every zone is much closer to being in line with Blizzard's quest design of 2010 rather than the design of 2004.
TAD also asked:
"What's the story impetus now for players to even bother going to Outland or WotLK?"
Outland and Northrend are in very strange places now that they've revamped the "old" world in Cataclysm. There's an immense disconnect in the story between levels 58 and 78 now. The quests you do in those areas technically take place in the past as far as the story goes, and you just have to roll with it and pretend it's perfectly normal. There's very little story impetus. None at all, really. It's just a victim of the fact that Blizzard is already rebuilding most of the world, they can't rebuild another at the same time. Maybe next expansion will see an Outland revamp that sets the story right. I won't lie, I loved Outland. Most people didn't, but I did. Zangarmarsh remains my favorite zone in the game even after seeing the Cataclysm beta. I'd love a reason to go back there.
tgrhawke asked:
"With Darkshore and Auberdine destroyed in Cataclysm, how do the draenei and the night elves get from their islands to Kalimdor?"
The night elves still have an encampment in Darkshore. After Auberdine's destruction, they moved further north. To actually answer your question though, you sail into Rut'Theran now, off the coast of Darnassus. Then you take a flight down to Darkshore.
Rezai asked:
"You know the thing where you complete a quest, and you can turn it in right there and get the next quest instead of going back to the quest giver? Does anyone know if that has been implemented for BC and Wrath content?"
I think people are misunderstanding this feature. Not every quest gets that treatment. Not every single quest completes automatically in the field and lets you pick up the new one in the middle of nowhere. This is only for specific quests and quest chains. The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King's content has been touched very little, so you most likely will not be seeing that in any quests in those areas. Only very specific parts of the new Cataclysm content have received it.

The best thing you can do is either:
1) Find a friend who plays, and join them if you can
2) Keep chatting in the rookie channel and try to find a really helpful corporation.
The people are what will get you past the learning wall. Trying to go it solo will only leave you frustrated.
Ylei Jul 19th 2010 8:01PM
@Furlover Look into EVE University, a player run training corp with a couple thousand members, regular classes on all aspects of EVE, an online media library of past recorded classes, and a great Wiki with info and guides on a lot of things.

I trial'd EVE a few years ago (right after they upgraded the graphics the first time I think) after deciding to take a break from WoW. I liked it at first, until my ship got destroyed while trying to complete a quest. My insurance only allowed me to continue with a crappy ship that wasn't nearly as good as the one I had before. I upgraded it the best I could, tried some other quests, then got back to the one I failed before, and died again. I got frustrated with the death penalties and gave up.

In regards to the Guild Perk system, will guild reputation be toon specific or across one account? Also if a perk is purchased for one toon will it again be account wide or only for that toon? Any idea on what the price range is going to be for the perks?

ICC becomes the new "Argent Tournament"-type training grounds? Ooooh the irony!
"In order to make sure you're ready to face Deathwing, we've set up this Training Dummy at the top of that citadel over there..."

Are the worgen quests in Grizzly Hills going to change at all when the worgen race becomes playable?
Grovinofdarkhour Jul 19th 2010 1:37PM
I'm sure they'll invoke the "Grizzly Hills worgen are not the same as Gilneas worgen" thing they've done with every other race.
Drakkenfyre Jul 19th 2010 1:42PM
Why would they?
People need to learn (and this is not directed at you specifically, but people who ask these kind of questions) that just because a race is becoming playable, that doesn't mean all the current characters of the race disappear or change.
The Goblins you play are not the Steamwheedle Cartel. They aren't going anywhere.
The Worgen you play are not the same Worgen in Grizzly Hills. They are a different set of people, different circumstance of becoming infected. Different faction, so to speak.
You don't see SW going anywhere despite killing humans in the Deadmines, right? And Darnassus isn't revolting because you killed Night Elves in Wailing Caverns. Different factions, different people. The Grimtotems don't like the rest of the Tauren. Hell, even the Goblins themselves war with each other. You ever notice when you kill a Ventiure Co. Goblin you get Booty Bay rep?

@Drakkenfyre: But... but... if I can't think of every race as a monolithic block of identically minded people, how am I supposed to stereotype them, know all about someone the moment I lay eyes on them, or hate someone I've never even met?

I wish there was a stat for how many trolls my trolls have killed.

Upon hitting level 80 and using the LFG tool, I have discovered that alot of people within these groups lack the basic of respect, and their just arnt enough vote kicks to take care of them. Is there anyway to report people who are just being disrespectful and rude if you are out of vote kicks.

I'd like to dispute the contention that Blizzard can't redo Outland and Northrend too. They can; they just don't want to spend the money to do it.
Unlike most other aspects of game design, revamping questing/storyline in zones is a highly parallelizable activity. That is, the teams for each zone, once given a starting direction, can act without requiring much interaction with the teams handling other zones.
So if Blizzard just hired a lot more people (back when Cata was gearing up), they certainly could have redone Outland and Northrend to make sense, story wise. But they just didn't want to spend that much money.
I'm not saying that was a bad thing to do, they're a publicly traded corporation, so they exist to make money. But let's not pretend it was impossible.

Not strictly related to WoW perse, but I just today saw an article about how some news sites are going to crack down on user commenting by requiring-real names and addresses. Reading the article it basically sounded like the day Blizz announced RealID, though they did mention right there some people were concerned about safety. Just wondering what you think about how the RealID system would work if it wasn't in such a strange environment as WoW. People on news sites don't have to comment ever, whereas sometimes we do for tech and such, so maybe it would work better for them instead of all the rage it generated for us.
Blacksword Jul 19th 2010 2:25PM
I understand this, but the whole story of the quest line is to escape from the Worgen before they turn you. If you are already a worgen.. you cant become more worgen or anything. The last escort mission the NPC makes a huge deal about you not being Worgen.
Dureena Jul 19th 2010 2:49PM
I'm trying to keep up with all the beta news, but I haven't seen this go by. Has anything further been said about the possibility of an 11th character slot on a server, either included in the expansion or available for a price? I'd pay at least $50 not to have to delete an alt to start a worgen on my server.
Samutz Jul 19th 2010 2:52PM
This gets asked every single Queue. Blizzard has said maybe later, but not for Cata's release.

" I'm really curious whether the overwhelming number of former WoW players is normal for EVE or if it's a recent thing. It's always interesting to see just how many WoW players there are in other MMOs. "
I am a WOW fan but not much of a raid fan. As far as I can tell, there has been no new PVE content in WOW since before last Christmas.
ICC = RAID and Ruby Sanctum = RAID.
I've got 9 Heroic Geared level 80 toons. As a result I suspended my account, pending the release of Cataclysm. I see lots of other WOW players on Dungeons & Dragons Online and I assume, like in EVE, they are there killing time while waiting for new content.
EaterOfBirds Jul 19th 2010 6:49PM
this. im not much of a raider so im getting pretty bored these weathers, looking forward to cata. passing my time with alts and battlegrounds best i can.
Komiroya Jul 19th 2010 3:27PM
i was taking a swim the other day and started to wonder, will the worgen be doing doggie paddle or the human swim animation? also don't imitate the forsaken swim its hard.

@Grovin
As long as Mr. Burns doesn't lead the charge in battling Deathwing, i'll be content.
I'm still ashamed that Burns was defeated by that level 1 training dummy...
