Tuesday Morning Post: Never tear us apart edition
Happy Tuesday morning, everyone! You know, I feel like I really should say something. Blizzard, despite all the rockiness, be it the Real ID fiasco or the huge 31-point talent tree changes, I still love you. I don't think anything can tear us apart. You know, except a 24-hour downtime. Luckily, my server's not in today's batch of downed servers, but Zangarmarsh, home of <It Came From The Blog>, is; yours may be as well, so be sure to check the list.
If your realm is listed, that just means you'll have plenty of time to look back all the big news from the past seven days, such as the new 31-point talent trees or the massive Twitter developer chat. And anyway, we do have normal downtime at the somewhat early time of 1-7 a.m. Pacific, so you may still have a bit of a time to read up regardless. With all that in mind, we have the usual roundup of news, opinions and guides from the past seven days ready for your perusal. Once you're done reading those, you can prepare to join all the 24-hour downtime refugees on Shadow Council.

Great song! Hard to top the original, but this was a nice cover.

God, I hate Tuesday morning maintenance.
Merch Jul 20th 2010 9:22AM
seconded. Hard to match the anguish in the original. song made you believe MIchael Hutchence (spelling?) was really hurting.
Dragonrose Jul 20th 2010 7:47AM
Ugh so many beta goodies! Must...resist...spoilage! -falls over-
Msterblaster Jul 20th 2010 7:59AM
Who wants to bet the maintenance goes long? I hope it won't but tbh it should just say server maintenance will be occurring from 1 a.m. Pacific until completion.
MeanGreen Jul 20th 2010 8:10AM
I'm lovin' this early realm maintenance. :D
Duulket Jul 20th 2010 8:18AM
Hey Daniel,
In your post you have the normal maintenance as 1-7 am pacific but the blue post that is linked says 1-9am pacific. Just a heads up.
mads.teilmann.rasmussen Jul 20th 2010 9:30AM
Thanks alot for posting that song. I didn't knew of Beck doing all these remixes/covers. Some really godly stuff in there!
Appriciated!
Reagus Jul 20th 2010 9:03AM
Great, now I want to go watch Donnie Darko
Trim-tab Jul 20th 2010 9:32AM
Blue post on link was edited for Tuesday, July 20th.
Maintenance will begin at 01:00 AM PDT and conclude at approximately 9:00 AM PDT.
So nobody go ballistic with "you said 7am!"

It never ceases to amaze me how Oceanic people like me just put up with this downtime. US server people can't play between 1am and 9am, sad but true, they must not sleep. That translates to 6PM to 2am on my time in Australia or an entire night after work, or weekday play night. Please let me start to rant.......EVERY weekly shutdown, no matter what time it starts, generally means Tuesdays are no play nights (casual player, kids, wife, dinner, normal life stuff, then play WOW after they have all gone to bed etc etc etc..) I have a six day WOW week.....end of rant. My time zone +/- 2 hrs includes all of SE Asia. Why can't we all get together and ask Blizz to consider us. An plz, forget the token Pacific shutdowns that used to happen a year or so ago. rant rant rant....
Krz Jul 20th 2010 10:49AM
Oceanic shutdowns were a nice concept, but the servers got overloaded with everyone else at that time (Blizz could have restricted or banned the creation of new characters on those realms at those times, though?)
I agree with you entirely, I reckon they should charge Oceanic subscribers 1/7th less than Americans. Heheh...
Msterblaster Jul 20th 2010 12:05PM
Called that one on the extension.
edgeblade69 Jul 20th 2010 2:01PM
Wow 3 extensions in 1 day. I really wonder why they bother giving us time frame estimates since they are rarely ever accurate within even 1-2 hours of said time frame. Just say "Realms will be down for scheduled maintenance. They will be back up when maintenance is complete." There, that wasn't so hard was it? Oh well, I couldn't play even if they were up since I'm waiting for my account to be restored from being hacked (curse you Curse Client!).
Shrugs Jul 20th 2010 4:08PM
Amazing how "scheduled" maintenance always turns out to be a disaster. You can just about count on every one being extended, with vague and obnoxious "updates".
And please, in before "You've never tried to maintain something so vast, so complicated, so blah blah blah,...LUA...millions of users....databases....millions of lines of code...blah...whine whine... programmers not magicians...complex...blah."
Lots of people have tough jobs and complete them without scheduled catastrophic system-wide paralysis.... Even on Tuesdays.
Drakkenfyre Jul 20th 2010 11:29PM
How many people maintain 11 million people on servers?
You said "before anyone says how complex it is", well, no one else who maintains systems like that maintains one as large. You might work for a company with a huge database and millions of users, but I doubt your simultaneous users and bandwidth are anywhere near close.
Shrugs Jul 21st 2010 5:02AM
What I actually said was "in before...", meaning that said argument is tired and worn out, not unlike the patience of millions of Blizzard's subscribers on Tuesdays.
