The Daily Quest: It's all about the gear

Remember running Scholomance a hundred times just to try to get that last piece of Dreadmist? And no one ever wanting to bother killing Jandice because she was optional and annoying? (It's true: I'm speaking from personal experience.) Times and loot tables may have changed, but we're still a bit gear-obsessed. So, for today's quest, here's what's been going 'round the blogosphere about gear.
- Blessing of Fish talks about why our gear is special.
- Larísa at the Pink Pigtail Inn is on the hunt for a decent cloak.
- Relevart's Druid Reliquary talks about epic gear feeling epic.
- Cynwise points out an important question from the recent dev chat: will we be able to wear a monocle with our top hat?

"Remember running Scholomance a hundred times just to try to get that last piece of Dreadmist?"
...how about running Stratholme a hundred times just to try to get that damn Baron Rivendare to drop his mount? @_@ Yep, shooting for it before Cataclysm... stupid Baron...

My "strat stat" is at 146, but I know I ran it a few times at level. So maybe 140 times until I got it to drop. And that's not even a horror story.
Good luck to you.

80 baron runs here according to my statistics tab, no mount yet! At least I get about 40g per run out of it...

i've seen the sword a few times, but no pony. aggregate number of runs is > 200

Agreed. This is why I'm seeking out mounts and titles while waiting for Cata. Gear gets replaced, but mounts and titles that really work for the character? Those last. ^_^

Is it just me or does that Human model look particularly good?

Stop looking at her tassels.

Oh, man. I only vaguely remember endgame on my warlock, but I definitely remember being delirious with relief when I got those shoulders of Jandice. I had to coax numerous people into doing the quest chain that requires killing her to get attempts in at all.

The game has moved on from it being about gear, the only thing that is somewhat relevant is the speed in which you attain said gear that can make it a distinguishing factor. The same with raid content, it was once a sought after 'commodity' of WoW but the game is now designed to allow all access to, given enough time, like wise with gear. This is not necessarily a bad thing, just the way the game has evolved...

Gear isn't what's important now, it's the number associated with the gear. My warrior had been stuck with Mirror of Truth for almost entirely a year and people would often judge me, saying it's a 200 iLevel and that I'm a moron for using it.
Yet, when I looked at their trinkets, they had two of the Triumph emblem trinkets and weren't gearing for their maximum potential but instead of the number associated with it.
I don't want to start a gearscore discussion (But I will anyways!) but the game has evolved into a state where the stats and effects of an item is no longer regarded by a large percentage of the community members.
How many more warriors and rogues that regardless of how high their gearscore is, they're itemized completely wrong?
Look at this screenshot [ http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8561/lowdps.jpg ], these were people all above 5.2k gearscore. They didn't bother to gem correctly, they didn't bother to look at their classes abilities [two of them were specced 0/0/71 for example]! They were all focused with their magical number that immediately granted them access to raids.
And this.. this is all on DEATHBRINGER. A fight with no movement at all, fully 25 man raid buffed with the 30% buff! (This happened tonight, and yes. We didn't down him.) Now I ask of you, are people still obsessed obsessed with gear or the artificial number associated with it?
P.S Can somebody explain to me how the rogue who was alive the entire fight and didn't die managed to do 1.4k DPS?

It's true, gear has way too much influence over the gameplay. When you can double your HP simply by equipping a certain set of armor, you know something is seriously wrong with this game.
Gear should be a flavor, not a major decisive factor.

I like the idea of adding dye options for armor in the game. I used to play Guild Wars and that was one of my favorite parts, it let you feel unique, even when everyone was wearing the same armor :P

Legendaries are different though, i want shadowmourne on my DK and valynir on my priest soo bad but eh i guess ill have to wait for fun runs in ilvl 355 gear lol still i think ill snap up 25 psaronites at the end of the expac when theyre going for 2g each :P

tbh, its all about the dum dum duh dee dum dum

Hal Jul 23rd 2010 6:37AM
Screw gearscore, you're not getting into MY raids without a top hat and monocle.
What's that? You only have one or the other? Lolnub.
Hurbster Jul 23rd 2010 7:40AM
How about a Haliscan Brimmed hat and a fishing rod ?
Joakim Jul 23rd 2010 8:16AM
Useful stats. Yes.
Adequate gearscore. Yes.
But the ultimate question for all gear is:
Does it look good?
:)
