Desolace judging by the background?

This picture makes me think someone needs to get some good Horde music* and mix it with the "Imperial March" from Star Wars. Just sayin'.
*I'd suggest something, but I almost never play my (few, low-level) Horde alts, so I don't know the music from their zones and cities well enough.

Good old Warcraft 2 music?

I hope there's an option for this dynamic water stuff. I think a lot of us have a friend or two who can hardly walk through Dal without DCing.

Water has a quality slider in Cataclysm, just like shadows. Turning it all the way down switches it over to the way it's been since classic.

Current beta build has 4 settings for the water, though theres little difference between the last three - likely just quality of reflections and whether to reflect characters in the final build. The lowest setting for "Liquids" (from lava to goo) is the standard textures you see in Wrath at the moment. At the top end, it's this (at the moment):

Full dynamic reflections on top of static object reflection, anything moving in water leaves a wake (rain even leaves ripples, now) and all of that is also affecting the dynamic reflections. As you can see, even the ships leave wakes.
It's getting better with every build in fact - the screenshot of the day looks like it was from the last build where reflections had a problem with camera angles and were displaying very oddly (Like you standing under a lamp on the dock in Stormwind, and there being a reflection of it twenty feet out to sea.)

Reminds me of the good ol days of Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness

/sigh I miss WC2

Those are some really odd reflections.

I hope the Ratchet-Booty Bay ship gets changed to the new Goblin
model, like they did with the Night Elf ships.

What really bugs me about all the shots of the water that I've seen so far is that it doesn't look like objects actually interact with it in anything resembling a realistic way. At least with the way that water is currently rendered in the game, you get sort of a shallow wake and small splashy particle effects when mobs move through the surface. This just looks like a static bumpy plane of reflective insubstantial plastic or something.
RoseClown Jul 27th 2010 12:34AM
Most the shots with players interating with it have shown a lot of effects, even improved splash effects! Either they just aren't doing it with the ships, or are adding that later. I mean, it is beta.

It's pretty, for sure. Maybe this is just me-- a direct correlation exists in my mind between how realistic water surfaces look and how realistically they should interact with physical objects. The more it looks like real water, the more I expect it to act like real water. I'm pretty much fine with the current water in the game because it looks like fake video game water, and it acts like fake video game water. The current water also fits into the artistic style of the game as a whole where physics and proportions are all out of whack everywhere you look. Then suddenly, there's all this shiny water trying to look all realistic but still acting like fake cartoon video game water.
I dunno. It is still beta so I guess there's a chance things will look better to me in a future build. Seeing it live in motion might give me better perspective too. It's not a game-breaker in any way either. It's just something that stands out to me.

I have some time off tomorrow and shall endeavour to get a nice (if short) clip showing off the current water effects in motion.
flawless Jul 27th 2010 9:05PM
Here you go. Mercury effects (still needs a lot of work) from Deepholm, still-water effects from near Stormwind Keep, and sea-water effects from Stormwind Harbor.

It does have a mercury effect that makes it almost look more like oil than water but it looks a whole lot better in motion than it does in static screencaps. Thank you for posting those videos. You are a gentleman and a scholar.

Caption from Warcraft's Twitter account when they posted this screenshot:
"The battle against the Twlight's Hammer cannot be won without an assault on the Twilight Highlands"

"This is clearly a goblin harbor, which makes it about the most awesome place on the planet. "
just about? Anything with 'Goblin' in it instantly makes it the most awesome place on the planet. =X
