The OverAchiever: The 25 most entertaining achievements, part 3

Every so often, I get tired of the self-seriousness that infests some of (OK, most of) the other work I do here and get the urge to write something purely for fun. After our series on evil achievements and the relentless misery of School of Hard Knocks, I'd like to spend some time on achievements that are nothing but an absolute joy from beginning to end.
This week we continue our series on World of Warcraft's most entertaining achievements. This is the full series to date, if you're just catching up with us:
- OverAchiever: Pure Win
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #25-21
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #20-16
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #15-11 (today's post)
15. Well Read
Like its considerably more evil counterpart Higher Learning -- not an achievement that's fun to do if your server doesn't have a specific chat channel dedicated to it, or if the channel that exists is inactive -- Well Read requires you to read a number of books. Unlike Higher Learning, the books you're looking for never disappear, reappear, spawn dummies or break your heart with a despawn a second before you reach them.
Azeroth is an incredibly expansive world, and I like to imagine the legion of patient but nameless scholars there who have no idea just how far their life's work has traveled. You'll find books about Azeroth's past, conjecture on the motivation of its greatest heroes, and speculation about its future scattered everywhere: grimy goblin workshops, dusty corners of distant dungeons, resting in the bedrooms of ordinary citizens everywhere, and occupying places of honor at the Stormwind and Scarlet Monastery libraries.
While reading them, I wonder about the circumstances that led to a copy of Sunwell -- The Fall of Quel'Thalas appearing in a night elf town, the anger with which an academic struggling to remain neutral might have penned The Betrayer Ascendant, and what kind of reaction a human browsing the stacks might have to The Kaldorei and the Well of Eternity. While finishing off the last few books I hadn't read during my druid's travels, I kept thinking to myself that most of these books would have to have been written by night elves, or at the very least heavily influenced by their records. And is there anything the night elves chose not to include? What portions of Azerothian history are known only by the nerubians, qiraji and the trolls?
Damn you, Destron Allicant; I can't do a single thing in the world anymore without thinking about this stuff.
Well Read is a sign of just how much thought, work and love went into this universe, but it's also a rather interesting historiographical puzzle on its own. If I ever do a list on the most thought-provoking achievements in the game, Well Read will have to be among the top 10 for that reason.
14. Rare mounts
OK, yeah; there's more than a smidgen of evil to the existence of rare mounts. Having to grind these things out is no picnic, and there's always the nightmarish possibility that, however many hundreds of times you kill Attumen or Anzu or the Baron, their best and coolest drop is just never going to materialize. A friend of mine has farmed High Priest Thekal in Zul'Gurub for years trying to get the Swift Zulian Tiger and has yet to see it once. Another trundled into Zul'Gurub to farm Zandalar rep on a lazy Sunday afternoon and got it without even trying. Yep, evil.
That said, it's the rare player who can't manage to get his hands on at least one or two dropped mounts, and it's only going to get easier as we advance into Cataclysm and pick up another five levels and a ton of health. The explosive joy you feel upon finally seeing the Reins of the Raven Lord or the Swift White Hawkstrider usually makes up for the effort you had to expend to get it, and if you're lucky enough to be toting around something like the Ashes of Al'ar or the Reins of the Onyxian Drake? That's even better.
13. Medium Rare and Northern Exposure
Their "Gotta catch 'em all!" counterparts in Bloody Rare and Frostbitten are firmly among the evil achievements, but finding just one rare out in the wilderness isn't hard -- and quite frankly, it's an awful lot of fun. Let's face it; whenever you see a silver dragon around a mob's portrait, it's kind of exciting, and it's almost impossible not to go stomp the thing just to see what drops. The Outland rares just drop blues with stats of varying usefulness, but the Northrend rare mobs all drop gold, a blue item and some cloth and motes as well. Frostbitten is actually a pretty decent achievement if you're looking to make some money -- as long as you don't mind going nuts trying to do it.
12. Lil' Game Hunter
From OverAchiever: Pure Win:
There's something wonderfully addictive about tracking down as many little pets as you can and then pulling out whichever suits your mood ... If you're going for any of the pet achievements, you'll get acquainted with all of the pet sellers in your faction, do some farming, a little questing, pester chicken farmers and -- one of my personal favorites -- kill a deranged Kael'thas. I used to think that my pet obsession was just a personal quirk, and then I was introduced to Warcraft Pets. Compared to some, I'm a piker. And yeah, those little pets mean a lot.

11. The Empire of Zul'drak
While a zone-wide achievement, I like to think of The Empire of Zul'drak as the more interesting portion and successor of its counterpart Guru of Drakuru. The latter -- the most compelling bit of which is entirely encapsulated by Zul'drak questing -- sees you pitting your wits and luck against a wily troll who decides to sell out the entire Drakkari empire to the Scourge. Why? He wants a captaincy among what he sees as the side fated to win, and it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. In Grizzly Hills, he'll spend the entirety of your quest line outsmarting you, but by Zul'drak, the tables have turned.
"Victory" or no victory, Zul'drak's story arc is the stuff of nightmares. Even with Drakuru finally vanquished, you spend the rest of the zone surveying the damage that -- let me remind you -- you as the player helped orchestrate and are in no position to reverse. It's a hellish land marked by dead gods, trolls who are refugees in their own country, the Ebon Blade's utter indifference to the moral issues raised by their plan to get ahead, the Argent Crusade's swinging its fists in the air for all the good it ultimately accomplishes, and -- amazingly enough -- even the Zandalari in the thick of it chronicling the fall of the Drakkari empire as it happens. If Edward Gibbon had pulled up a courtside seat to the barbarian invasions of Rome, this would've been the result.
More than a year ago, we talked about peoples' picks for the best zone of Wrath, and with the benefit of hindsight and more experience playing both Alliance and Horde across the continent, I've wondered whether any zone is really the undisputed "best." Wrath is full of superlative questing, period, and Zul'drak is a perfect example of how Blizzard nailed the expansion's morally ambiguous feel.
Working on achievements? The Overachiever is here to help! We've covered everything from Glory of the Hero and Insane in the Membrane to Master of Alterac Valley and Lil' Game Hunter, and you can count on us to guide you through holidays and Azeroth's special events. Its hard for me to decide if I liked questing in Zul'Drak or Icecrown more, they're both wonderful zones. When I first went through on my main I hadn't done the Grizzly Hills Drakuru quests, so when I leveled my alt there the connection and implications of what was going on blew my mind.

If it's a choice between the two, go with the one that Doesn't have Fordring in it. I hate that guy. Friggin Retardin has an ego the size of Durotar and the brains of Half a Garrosh. His idiotic spouting at the beginning of ICC and during TotC set my teeth on edge. My only joy involving him was watching that video of the guild that INTENTIONALLY KILLED HIM.
Tyr Jul 29th 2010 5:11PM
I have seen Attumen drop once on an achievement run and it went to the worst player in the group, on his rarely played alt no less. I added him to all my friend lists just to see how often he logged cus I was pretty pissed at losing it (I've been farming him once a week for over a year now) and I think he's logged maybe twice since then.
I saw a noob shaman (wrong talents, wrong spec, no english when i tried to whisper him) just today in Dalaran riding Rivendare's Deathcharger. I checked his armory to see his kills and he'd killed the baron a grand total of two times! I guess he got it by accident while leveling.
I have killed the baron over 90 times without seeing the mount drop, a friend has killed him 224 times and hasn't had any luck so far. I'm sure I share this pain with many others here.
How come the idiots or once-a-month players seem to have all the luck in the world in this game all the time? Random is random, I know, but still there should be as many normals as idiots with crazy luck. Just saying I haven't met many intelligent players who were also insanely lucky in-game.
Tyr Jul 29th 2010 5:15PM
wrong spec = wrong gear/gems; it's late over here.
Arrowsmith Jul 29th 2010 5:20PM
Oh that's nothing. My best friend once watched a Death Knight take down the TLPD and then say in General "Now to save up the money for epic flying."
....Yeah. I know.
lockanon Jul 29th 2010 7:04PM
SO let me see if I have this correct?
Your friend saw a DK get LUCKY with a rare spawn and win something that everyone else was going for too? AND he didn't have the money on him to use said item? That IS horrendous, I mean, imagine if someone won the lottery and had never had money before? What the hell would they do with it? That money should have OBVIOUSLY gone to someone more deserving, like someone rich already. They would know exactly what to do with that money, not some plebeian neanderthal poor noob.
And the other guy lost a mount to a noob who's lack of skills have proven he doesn't deserve things like rare mounts. Only the 1337 have earned these rare mounts, damnit.
I feel for you guys, you should file a gm ticket to have these atrocities rectified.
McRaider Jul 29th 2010 7:19PM
I've been happy about my luck on some drops. Usually if I see something rare drop, it's mine. I've gotten the OS3D 10/25 drakes (both on the first time I rolled for them), the brewfest mount (which I sold to a dwarf friend for 2k (don't really care about it), the hallows end mount (sold for 7k + some other stuff).
The bad side of my luck is that nothing really drops. 200+ rivendare kills... been farming ZG for the last year; have done Kael'thas and MC for the legendarys for a LOT...
Tyr Jul 29th 2010 7:28PM
"And the other guy lost a mount to a noob who's lack of skills have proven he doesn't deserve things like rare mounts. Only the 1337 have earned these rare mounts, damnit."
You've obviously never known the frustration of farming something very rare for months and then watch it go to someone else who has no real use for it, has no real interest in it and probably doesn't even understand the value of it. I wouldn't have minded if the mount went to someone who played regularly. Regularly as in more than once every 3 weeks.
Perhaps I shouldn't have used the word noob, I knew that would've grinded someone's already overgrinded gears and would make me look like a condescending asshole. I'm not leet, I'm pretty casual and normally I'd react like you did, but goddammit it's one of the few things I really want in this game and I hate waiting for another year to get another blessing from the RNG.
How about you farm that shit for a year and go through the same scenario. I hope you don't smash a hole through your wall cus I almost did.
/wall built.
SaintStryfe Jul 29th 2010 7:42PM
Took me 246. Consider it gold farming, plus the chance at a really cool bonus.

You guys are funny for the way you voted lockanon's comment down. Sure he was snarky but he was responding in obvious frustration to the original comment from Tyr, which reeked of entitled elitism (sorry dude).
I am one of many who hates this comment system. One of the things I hate most is the voting up or down--any unpopular comment gets voted down, even if it's well thought out or written. Sometimes I come along and vote them up just to be contrary.
Hollow Leviathan Jul 29th 2010 8:54PM
It was not well thought out, and I consider it a step past 'snarky'. The stories are like when my raid goes and does a OS+3 for the drake and has to pug 1 dps, and the pug wins the drake, 2 weeks in a row. Not like they didn't deserve it, but Lady Luck is having fun at our expense. There's no elitism here.
Don't be a jerk.
SettleDown Jul 29th 2010 9:55PM
That's a little scary man. Remember it's a game. Supposed to be a little entertaining.
Jordan Jul 30th 2010 1:00AM
Can't upvote Lockanon enough, RNG is RNG is RNG. Nobody 'deserves' anything with regard to RNG.
Moanique Jul 30th 2010 4:05AM
It's probably the same sort of thing that leads to 80-year-old grandmothers hitting the lottery for $1,000,000 a year for life.
Ben Jul 29th 2010 5:19PM
Is there a website that mines armory data for the most popular/least popular achievements and compares it to your own achievements? Seems like it wouldn't be too complicated to have an automated "achievement suggester" that uses completion frequency as a measure for ease of attainment and suggests some low-lying achievement fruit that a character hasn't done themselves.
Scunosi Jul 29th 2010 5:44PM
I know there's a website that I use for deciding which gems to cut called wowpopular, no idea if it works for achievements but worth checking out, I think it takes data from all servers.
(cutaia) Jul 29th 2010 5:45PM
I've been begging for someone to make a site like this for WoW: http://www.trueachievements.com/
True Achievements basically does exactly what you're talking about, except for XBox. It also gives you a "true" achievement score by weighting achievements based on the percentage of people who have actually done each one.
So basically, in a WoW version, the [Level 10] achievement might end up being worth 0 "true" achievement points because literally every armory-able character will have it, where as something like [The Light of Dawn] might end up being worth 500 "true" achievement points.
It worked perfectly. It would even adjust as more people got achievements. So [Glory of the Hero] would have been worth a ton when Wrath released, but nowadays it wouldn't be.
It would be a fun little metagame if a WoW version as made (as long as we all collectively ignored anyone trying to use it as a measurement of ePeen).
Derrek Jul 29th 2010 5:21PM
Zul'drak doesn't like me. I've never been able to quest past the first hub. The zone just seems to have a repulsor field around it. I start questing there, but no matter how hard I let it, it just doesn't grab me the way the other Northrend zones do. I really can't place why.
Pyromelter Jul 29th 2010 6:20PM
There are a lot of crappy quests there. The one where you have to kill water elementals and then the trolls around there is really bleh. A lot of the other ones all around are just really kinda meh. Doing the vehicle quest where you kill thrym is kinda fun but also a real pain in the butt with really poor mechanics. Even some of the cooler ones for drakkuru, your disguise falls off, and oh by the way for some reason abominations can see you through the disguise. The argent crusade daily quests also are blech.
Pyromelter Jul 29th 2010 6:26PM
Forgot to add: Ampitheater of Anguish is absolutely full of 100% win though. :)
