Just because it's been used since the 1600s doesn't make it correct grammar. :) If "preventative" is the adjective, "preventation" would be its matching noun, which I don't believe anyone says on purpose. The noun is "prevention", so the adjective is "preventive".
Just as bad as "irregardless", which doubly negates itself yet people use it anyway. *sigh*
