Breakfast Topic: Hacked off by hackers

Hacked! It is not fun, and it happens more than anyone would like to admit. Gear, gold and pride, all pilfered by some stranger.
It starts with a simple email from Blizzard. Hmmm, it's my first-ever email from Blizzard that causes immediate concern. It says that my account has been "banned and deleted" for buying or selling in-game gold for profit. I am stare at it in shock for a minute ... Is this a joke? My heart starts racing. I run back to my office computer to figure out what to do, and my head starts spinning in confusion. My immediate emotional response catches me off guard ... My head starts to pound. All that work, all that time, all the friends ... just gone ...
And then the high-level anger sets in, as logic begins to prevail. Wait, I never bought gold. I never even considered it! What is going on? I jump online and write an appeal with blazing speed, fueled by my troll rage. In retrospect, this was not exactly the smartest move and probably served to delay my account restoration. I recall that it read something like this ...
"This ban is insane! Never in my life have I bought gold; the practice disgusts me. Are you people insane or incompetent? I was hacked, obviously. What, is there no system to protect me, your customer? What is going on? Call me."
Like Blizzard is going to call little old me because my account was hacked ... I imagine my email was passed around as the joke of the day. Looking back at it, it read somewhere between an incoherent call to an ex-girlfriend and a corporate memo gone bad.
It took about a month to get my account back, and it gave me time to process what happened. I missed the game sorely, but it was my fault. I should have changed my password more often. I should have had an authenticator. Yet I just could not shake this deep feeling of being violated.
No matter what kind of player you are, you spend a lot of time with your characters and the other people you play with. The things you acquire in game may just be pixels, but they're valuable to you. That first crafted item with your character's name on it, a tabard earned with honor points, a cool fishing hat ... It took me a long while to get over the feeling and start playing again, even after the account was restored. A few members of my guild were hacked at about the same time; we believe our website was hacked, which started the whole thing. Some of our guildies just never came back. They said they just felt too exposed and could not bring themselves to play anymore. Honestly? Being hacked still plays in the back of my mind every time I log on.
Have you been hacked or know a friend who was hacked and had trouble getting back into the game? Has being hacked left you completely unsettled?

I was hacked the other month, it was an incredibly sinking feeling, much the way you described, I had just won a battered hilt, sold it and bought some lovely new boots for my hunter and then all I could feel was it all slipping away!
Luckily, I didn't panic as much as the OP, I sent my ID off to Blizzard and it was sorted within 24hours, although I bought an authenticator the day after and I'm very wary about letting anyone near my account/computer and check it even more so.
If the game were free I wouldn't have been so bothered, but 8.99 a month for somebody to steal everything you've worked towards - no thanks!

Who pays $8.99/month?! And where can I get that deal! Unless its in a non-American currency.
jimbob Aug 5th 2010 8:20AM
It's £8.99 a month in the UK :D

Still cheaper than in the US!

@Marco
No, once you convert pounds to dollars, it isn't.
Drakkenfyre Aug 5th 2010 12:53PM
marco, do you know the exchange rate? It's 70 cent cheaper.

In Romania it's 20$ per month.... Anyway, who is getting hacked really deserve that. Thumb me down, but that's the truth.

I don't think you quite understand the hacking process.
I am the owner of two accounts, one of which was used as a RaF leveling buddy, and was never used again after that. I have never bought gold, I never download anything suspicious, and I've never followed a link in an email.
I do everything in order to not get my stuff stolen, yet recently that second account which hasn't been logged into in ages was hacked and used to farm gold.
Sometimes it's nothing that a customer does, it's simply the gold farmers getting lucky and phishing like mad for your info.

I almost wish Blizzard would stop banning bots.
Back when automated bots did all the farming, account hacking was not such a widespread problem as it is now. They messed up the game economy a little but it didn't impact my own account in a significant way. Now that they banned all the bots and made it economically unfeasible to continue business that way, the gold sellers have gone on to hacking accounts, which now impacts individual users in a very destructive way.
It feels almost like Blizzard upped the penalty for parking violations from $10 to confiscation of the vehicle, so instead the violators resort to stealing cars to park illegally. The violators still park illegally, but now it's my car instead of theirs.

My friend got hacked and he quit wow because of that. It really makes me sad, his account got restored but he said he just doesn't feel like playing anymore after that. I am trying to get him back into the game and I think i'll buy an authenticator for him :)

Yep, I was hacked a few weeks ago, fortunately I had no problem getting my account back, the Blizzard support team are always pretty professional.
However, I hadn't played WoW for a while due to real life commitments, I recently got a beta invite so I've tried to get back into WoW again - Cataclysm is amazing after all, however when my account's characters were restored not all the items had been returned especially my hard earned t10... this has really killed any love I have for playing my main paladin until Cataclysm :( It's a sad tale really, my warrior was fine but not much could be done for my paladin and I really don't want to go back into random dungeons with half ret & half holy gear... it's just embarrassing.
By Grabthar's hammer, by the sons of Wyvern, my paladin SHALL BE AVENGED!!!!

What are you talking about, Decongle? Galaxy Quest was amazing. I will always be a loyal fan of Peter Quincy Taggart...
