I wasn't sure about Mama Said Freeze You Out at first. During the first ten to twenty seconds, I kind of gave it that "turn my head sideways and look at it from the corner of my eye" glare of uncertainty. I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. I'm a huge fan of Nananea's other work, so I stuck it out. And then, like the sun cresting the horizon to create a beautiful dawn, Mama Said Freeze You Out blossomed into something incredible.
There's a new joke every few seconds in this video, and the lyrics do more than just parody LL Cool J's original verse. Nananea took the time to drop some unexpected humor into the words, and even performs some subtle critiques of the PVP game. For all that one might wish for a more skillful lyricist (or "flow," I have been told the hip, new kids call it), I think this performance nailed a wonderful line of parody and criticism.
Also, this video has forced me to realize the original Mama Said Knock You Out is 20 years old. My god.
Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an e-mail at machinima AT wow DOT com.
This is actually the first machinima I've seen in awhile that managed to hold my attention all the way to the end.
I liked it! It was nicely shot and showed some good skill with the visuals. I do think the sound work could have used a little tweaking, so I'd recommend working -just- a little bit more on it next time.
The lyrics were a little strained at times, but they were clever and creative enough to keep me chuckling while I listened. I liked the little coda at the end with the credits and the 'live to win' shoutout.
The part that got the biggest laugh out of me by far was that 'how to make a pvp video' bit. I just about choked.
Bonus points for not being a blood elf!
Also bonus points for some Alliance love. I don't think the blue faction gets enough screen time amongst the machinima community.
I'd say stick to PvP _if_ you're so good at that. Just don't attempt to sing, rap or make a mediocre machinima to tell everyone. Because, girl, this can't possibly be what your mama wanted you to do.
Instead of putting down someone who actually, you know, put the time and effort into actually doing something...why don't you get off your butt and make a better video?
Not that I expect to see that. Armchair pundits, and all that.
