Know Your Lore: Nathanos Marris, pg 2

As for the Forsaken, although Nathanos would have been an excellent, logical choice to train the new legion of Forsaken hunters were he still alive (and undead), they aren't without a teacher. Sylvanas Windrunner was, after all, the Ranger General of Silvermoon -- and after she regained her body she became the first dark ranger. According to the RPG books, dark rangers aren't quite like the hunters and rangers we know in WoW -- rangers themselves are highly attuned with nature, and death severs that connection, so the dark rangers turn to shadow magic rather than the natural magic of the wild in order to accomplish what they used to do.

So we have a few working theories about the forsaken hunters -- Nathanos may have trained a few individuals during his time as Champion of the Banshee Queen, or perhaps the dark rangers have started taking non-elven undead under their wings. There's also a third, much more grim possibility, and it lies with another organization that has roots in the former kingdom of Lordaeron -- the Scarlet Crusade.

The three dreadlords worked with Sylvanas and helped her regain her body and attempt her revenge on Arthas -- but what they did not expect was that Sylvanas would then turn on them. She persuaded Varimathras to join her side, had him kill Detheroc as a show of his allegiance, and then attacked Balnazzar's base, where Varimathras "killed" Balnazzar when he would not join sides with the Forsaken. Balnazzar escaped, but he swore his vengeance. When the Scarlet Crusade invaded Stratholme, he possessed their leader in order to enact that vengeance.
It didn't take much to push the overly zealous members of the Silver Hand to form the Scarlet Crusade -- an organization devoted to wiping out the undead. And it took even less pushing to cause the organization, formed under what was though to be a noble cause, into performing unspeakable acts in the name of "justice." The Scarlet Crusade turned from an organization devoted to destroying the undead, to an organization that killed anyone and anything on sight -- after all, if a lone human were wandering the forests of the Plaguelands, it could be and should be assumed he was in actuality an undead, just freshly raised.

Over the course of World of Warcraft, the Scarlet Crusade has been finding themselves slowly losing their war, and by the time Cataclysm comes into play, the Scarlet Crusade is a shell of its former self. Few members remain, and those that do remain are quickly dying out. The Forsaken may have taken this opportunity to raise several of these dead former Scarlet Crusade hunters and used them to train hunters of their own. A grim fate for those once fervently seeking to eliminate all undead -- to become the very thing you spent your life trying to destroy. But as we've seen from many of the spoilers surrounding Cataclysm -- it's a grim expansion.
As for the human race, and their sudden interest in the hunter class -- one thing to keep in mind with the humans of Stormwind is that they've had a fairly shaky history as of late. The kingdom of Stormwind was utterly destroyed, and then rebuilt -- it could very well be that there simply was greater need of other tasks than hunting. Or, given the dissolution of the Scarlet Crusade, it could be that some former members have left the ranks and joined the Alliance whole-hearted, and agreed to teach others in the ways of the hunter as a sort of penance for the atrocities they committed while serving the Scarlet Crusade.

Regardless, the hunter class is relatively easy for roleplayers and storytellers to justify if needed -- the class choice isn't quite as far of a stretch as previously thought, unlike other race and class combinations that have left people mystified. Combinations like the noble tauren, and their sudden interest in paladins and priests. Next week, we'll take a look at the "holy cows" and how they fit, along with a dive into tauren history -- or what exists of it.

I admire your loyalty because I have the same loyalty towards the Alliance & Stormwind, but I'd no doubt given the situation where my character's body was returned back as a Forsaken, I'd do the decent thing and off myself.
I could never understand a member of the Alliance, nay a hero of the Alliance none the less live on as a Forsaken...

"It didn't take much to push the overly zealous members of the Silver Hand to form the Scarlet Crusade"
Oh for crying out loud, could you please remain neutral in just ONE of your articles? Your horde love is showing.
Didn't take much, you say? Your prince kills your king, and you have no other option but to see how your country and your order are ravaged continiously by the Scourge.

Not sure I understand the sequence of events described here. The Scarlet Crusade invades Stratholme. Balnazzar possesses the leader of the Scarlet Crusade. Balnazzar pushes the Scarlet Crusade to form... the Scarlet Crusade?

I've frankly never understood the whole thing about the Forsaken raising others to their cause. If the whole idea of the forsaken is that of free but generally evil undead, then how could they possibly survive when a small army of newly raised and VERY angry people decides that they don't like their "makers"?

I think this question may be answered in Cataclysm.

Good article.
"It is a tragedy. I think... I believe that our kind is cursed, . We are cursed to lose our greatest warriors; our most noble heroes; our most gifted scholars. We are indebted to you and I assure you, , wherever Nathanos Marris is now, he smiles down upon you."
something like this just makes me hate Varian even more. Such arrogance. I'm not sure he even knew Nathanos Marris in person, seeing as he was a Lordaeron citizen. He had no clue how this Nathanos Blightcaller now thought, only that he was as loyal to Sylvannas in undeath as he was in life. That should tell him something, that quite some part of the original personality remained.
But now, he just wants us and, maybe himself, to believe that Nathanos is thankful for players killing him.... If he had really wanted to die so badly he would have killed himself.
He just chooses to believe what he wants to believe, of course he just CAN'T be wrong...
Arrogant bastard.

At this time, it's still largely unclear why the hunters chose Cataclysm as the time and place to show their faces.
I'm soory to say this but im afraid that the main reason for this has nothing to do with lore but with keeping people interested with playing WoW by giving new class combinations. Just for an explantion they make up some new lore which unfortunately is often weak in my eyes.
I'm not a cynical person but this seems to be the way in numerous cases in WoW for example:
People want to play undead because of the scourge campaign in wc3 so the forsaken are introduced to the horde and they made up some lore so it would fit, but lorewise it would have been more inetersting if the forsaken were neutral and only in forthemselves which i can hapily add seems to be the case now.
However there are plenty other cases for which there no clear lore reason but more a player mmorpg reason like worgen becoming playeble, raid bosses etc. But however i welcome the idea of undead hunters just the name of it sounds cool plus i also hope that Nathanos returns to the forsaken. He would be a perfect replacement for Varimathras along with the high aphotecery.
Nevertheless it was an interesting article.

As someone who's been saving up and buying BOA equipment for her undead hunter come Cata, this article fills me with glee.

First off assuming that all Forsaken are human is just that... an assumption. Some of them could easily have been high elves that were turning during the sacking of Quel'Thalas. We just wouldn't recognize them as elves due to their decay.
Second, rationalizing undead hunters is stretching a bit. Despite being the first Dark Ranger, Sylvanas trained no one as a hunter. Even Nathanos was already trained, she just adopted him into her ranks. Hunters are supposed to be at home in the wilds and the Forsaken aren't keen on going camping as it were. You could put in an npc here and there saying they were the apprentices of the Blightcaller, but for thousands of undead hunters to suddenly "appear" makes little sense lore wise.
Actually this is Blizzard being lazy, by creating "new" classes they don't have to design from scratch. It is far easier to recycle existing content than create new content. This isn't new, BC we got horde paladins and alliance shamans both gave each faction a "new" class without Blizzard having to design one. Rationalize it however you want, but a (nearly) 6 year old MMO that has added only 1 new class is rather... lacking.

You've seen death knights. Do you honestly want to go through the entire debacle again and again and -again- every expansion? Yes, the other classes probably won't start at 55, but that still won't prevent there being a lot of bad people attracted to them.
Besides, Blizzard has already covered most every archetype already. It'd be hard to get anything else that doesn't step an existing class's toes.
DrowNoble Aug 9th 2010 3:48PM
It is very easy to add more classes. They originally were going to have necromancers for Wrath. Why not have another pet class that uses undead pets instead of demons? Frost magic instead of Fire? It doesn't have to be radically different from the warlock but could have some similarities.
Why stop there, why not make more Hero Classes based off WC3? Dark Ranger comes to mind obviously.
The point is other MMO's have added new classes after the fact. With Blizzard's vast amount of income, they should of been able to easily add more over time. Yet they refuse to, instead we get Tauren Paladins! Night Elf Mages! Nevermind it makes no sense lore-wise, it's Sorta New Class 2.0!

I like to think that Anduin Wrynn has something to do with the current increase in human hunter popularity. The WoW Comic has done a pretty good job of showing off his favoritism with the bow and arrow, and it stands to reason that he could end up becoming a ranger. Since Lore-wise he's 15 now, it stands to reason that he could be decently well-trained in the arts of war; doubly so since he is the son of a war-time king.

I always thought that Marris was reminiscent of Tam Lin, a huntsman beloved of the queen of the fae in Scottish/Celtic folklore. Here's his wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tam_Lin
With Sylvanas as his dark fairy queen, Marris as Tam Lin makes a sort of sense...although to fit exactly he'd need a bird of prey for a pet, and a one true love to rescue him.
Omegan01 Aug 10th 2010 7:42PM
"It is very easy to add more classes."
The fact that blizzard is still making major changes to the death knights a year and a half after their introduction suggests the opposite.

What an outstanding treatment of the history of Nathanos Marris! He, along with Bolvar, are probably my two favorite historical NPCs. But sadly, all this talk about the Blightcaller just reminds me how much I miss the good old "vanilla" days.
