As alluded to in other sound files data-mined from the Cataclysm beta, traitors from the Horde and the Alliance are defecting from their respective factions to the new Twilight's Hammer cult. Previously, the identities of these traitors have remained unknown, but new sound files indicate we just might know now who is turning away from their own. Spoilers and sound clips after the jump.
WARNING: This post contains spoilers about the upcoming World of Warcraft expansion Cataclysm. Do not read further if you do not wish to be spoiled on major plot points.
Cho'gall's sound files, in Dire Maul, indicate that there are two traitors, an Alliance and a Horde figure, who are working from within to give the Twilight's Hammer Cult a leg-up in recruiting. We can now surmise that those traitors are Archbishop Benedictus, now known as The Black Bishop, for the Alliance and Grand Magister Rommath for the Horde. Sound clips follow:
Sarcastic YAY! I guess I should be careful what I wish for! I wanted more blood elves involved with cataclysm and I go that-- another blood elf traitor.
Well, to be fair, there is a good chance that Lor'themar is the one acting against him like Varian is against Benedictus. I hope so, at least. It would give us a good chance to delve into the character of a faction leader who hasn't really been given much of an opportunity for growth.
Yeah, least the bloodelves have SOMETHING occurring. Our biggest bit of lore was also the shortest, it barely lasted for one expansion, and that was during Burning Crusade, and that seemed more focused on Draenei to me anyways.
At least this might be cause for some fun in the city.
And Draenei, you guys should be thankful that you aren't getting any attention. Though, you never know, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll run out ideas for Cataclysm bosses and Velen will inexplicably change his mind about this whole "exile" thing, kiss and make up with Kil'jaeden, and become a raid boss in patch 4.2.
Benedictus is kind of a big deal, he is the leader of the church of the light, and the first Archbishop after Alonsus Faol who founded the order of the silver hand.
This could have weird repercussions, like paladins and priests not being trusted in lore.
I don't think the Alliance Paladins have much to worry about. They're part of the Order of the Silver Hand, which had merged with the Argent Dawn to become the Argent Crusade. If the Paladins got any sort of problems out of this, it would probably be due to people losing faith in the Light with such a prominent figure becoming evil.
But the Priests being untrusted can definitely happen, seeing as how the Alliance's Priest "leader" was still Benedictus. Priests never really get a whole lot of lore, so this may create some nice tension.
I'd say Alliance priests turn to the greatest priest alive atm. Prophet Velen the Divine.
Really, who needs a silly strangely tall Bishop who only sends people to Razorfen when you have an awesome Priest who kicks some demon's behind around with his floating Naaru buddies. Actually I hope this creates an oppertunity(sp) for the Draenei to bond a bit more with Varian and have at least some story in the whole expansion. it feels so unfair, other races get awesome new classes, towns and starting zones but the Draenei get nothing at all! I say the Worgen village in the Blasted Lands should have been Draenei instead.
Thanks, Blizzard. You know, five whole minutes actually went by without a reminder that you think all Blood Elves are good for are being traitorous bastards and all our leaders are good for are providing raid bosses for everyone.
Again, it could very easily be Lor'themar himself who is pushing him to reveal this. The fact that Lor'themar now has his own voice files may increase this likelihood. So while a Blood Elf is being a traitor, it could very well be a Blood Elf who stops him.
I don't give a shit if it's Lor'themar doing it. If this is the kind of "development" the blue monkeys at the keyboard have planned for him, I would rather see him continue to collect dust in the throne room.
Yes, it's just a game and I should relax--but I am just sick and gorram tired of seeing my favorite race consistently portrayed this way. This is TWO leaders we're going to have to put down, now. No, Rommath isn't a faction leader--but he's hugely important to the Sin'dorei. To let him rot for an entire expansion, and then all of a sudden turn traitor?
And turning traitor, seriously? How many times are they going to go to that well? They really can't think of anything better than that? Jesus.
How could the guy personally loyal to Kael'Thas, sent back alongside the captured Naaru with the full intention of making a snack out of the guy possibly be a traitor! How dare they!?!?
Personally, I don't find this one a surprise at all. Benedictus, on the other hand, never showed any signs of divided loyalties. Rommath revered Kael, and then saw his chosen leader's fall: that would disillusion anyone.

Holy crap man. You win. My nostrils are gonna burn for a week from the volume of Mountain Dew that came shooting out of them.

You know, why's it always gotta be the black bishop whose evil? Seriously.
Well, easiest thing to do is just find a white bishop to stand just off to the side in front of this guy...
Course they'll kill each other off in what will be the most epic, yet awkward charge, known to mankind...

I can't believe you just pulled off a chess joke. Well played, sir.

Check Mate
Sithril Aug 9th 2010 4:29PM
Well, Varian's the King.
He just needs to stand on the oposite colour of the Bishops tile-colour.
That brings the question - hows he gonna kill him?
Shiro_Shishi Aug 11th 2010 12:37AM
Heroic Leap across the Chess Board.
Checkmate indeed.

Not that I'd like one in this role, but what exactly are the Draenei doing again?

I'm pretty livid, myself.

good thing i transferred my priest to horde then :)

There are twilight paladins in the Twilight highlands, that's possibly the result of Benedictus defecting.
