MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It's not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around: past, present and future.
EVE player destroys over $1,000 worth of game time Word of Warcraft players, imagine you were transporting goods from Stormwind to Booty Bay so you could sell them in the neutral auction house rather than the Alliance auction house. You were ganked en route, but instead of the simple corpse run that we know, everything you had in your bags either dropped for your opponent as spoils of war or were destroyed outright in the fight. Now imagine the goods you had in your bags were legitimately purchased with real money ... over $1,000 worth of real money.

Star Wars: The Old Republic's space combat detailed in PC Gamer The Old Republic hopefuls were given a little scare when it was rumored that the game's space combat would be a completely on-rails experience. PC Gamer has published details since then assuring gamers that it will be a bit more robust than that, though still not a sandbox experience.

Personality in Guild Wars 2: NPCs will give you pie Do you like pie? Do you want game NPCs to give you free pie? How about a free jar of bees? (Don't look so surprised; it's an excellent weapon.) It may sound funny, but free goodies from NPCs are all part of the personality system in Guild Wars 2. Build your reputation and win the love of the commonfolk or laugh as they cower in fear.
Ask Massively: Free-to-play edition Another week, another edition of Ask Massively! This time around, the Massively team tackles a question about the latest trend in MMO gaming: free-to-play games and pay-to-play games making the switch. What do they think? Is it a good thing? Is it a bad thing?

The Old Republic announces four new playable species To the elation of fans of Star Wars: The Old Republic, the developers at BioWare announced that the Sith "pure blood" and Miraluka will be playable species for the Sith warrior and Jedi knight classes, respectively. On top of that, the Mirialan species will be available to Force push as Jedi consulars, and the Sith inquisitor can slash his dual-bladed lightsaber as an acrobatic Zabrak. No idea what that means? Pop over to Massively for the explanation.

Massively Speaking episode 110 Massively Speaking is back this week as Shawn and Rubi are joined by SWTOR columnist and all-around Star Wars guru Larry Everett. Discussion includes the Guild Wars 2 level cap, 38 Studios' move to Rhode Island, the end of Exteel and Richard Garriott's recent legal win over NCsoft.

Reminds me of why I don't play EVE, but somehow greatly enjoy reading stories about the game.

I know, right?
I tried EVE for a day. It was kinda interesting but not really my cup of tea. Things like this make me gald I didn't get into it.

Things like this remind me why I love EVE. I'm sure that that pirate was weeping, though. So much free game time, right there for the taking... 6-1/2 years of free game time, all gone up in smoke.
Zhiva Aug 10th 2010 4:25PM
I tried EVE for a couple of hours, most of which I spent searching for the way to increase font size.

"Things like this remind me why I love EVE."
Agreed.
Someone got stupid, and in EVE, stupidity costs money. If you were redeeming the PLEX, it never should have left the station. If what I hear is true and this happened in Jita, then he could've found a customer there. There was absolutely no need to carry it anywhere, especially in that amount.

"I tried EVE for a couple of hours, most of which I spent searching for the way to increase font size."
So sad and so true. (I recall I did find it in the end... not sure, it's been a bit over a year)
EVE is a great game, a true sandbox MMO but the learning curve is way too high for me (and most people, it seems)

I say you should give eve a try. When things are at risk it just makes it that more exciting and actually requires you to be smart. It's alot more complex compared to WoW, but that what makes things better. Like a stick shift car to an automatic. A stick is "harder" to learn, but you can control your car better after you learn it and it is much more enjoyable. This article is just a case of a player not playing it very smart..

I'm enjoying all the rants about the on-rails space combat in SWTOR. Space combat wasn't even a possibility until 2 months ago, and now a minor part of the game won't be quite as good as they imagined they're threatening a boycott? Most of the time, idiots annoy me, but sometimes I have to just laugh at them.

The space combat doesn't even sound bad at all. It sounds like Starfox and some of the Rogue Squadron levels. Those games were awesome, so having combat like that is cool too. Hell, imagine it like how Mass Effect 2 made its levels into linear tunnel affairs. It didn't make the game bad at all. It made it better, with more focused content since you're going down specific paths. I see the space combat as a fun distraction from my usual storylining.

plus, Star Wars is known for fast-paced space flight, crazy escape/evasive maneuvers and such that a on-rail tunnel style of gameplay is best to replicate the intensity of the movie scenes. I also liked the 'hotspot' aspect of it, kinda like an instance. It made me think that space exploration or navigation at least might still be possible although with lightspeed generators, space travel time is pretty short so who knows?

For non-EVE players who look at that blurb and have their head explode about how something like that could happen, just keep in mind that the person who lost the items was transporting them in about as unsafe a method as possible. WoW doesn't have a very good analogue (since there's no in game item destruction), but imagine if there were cross level BGs, and you decided to have a level 5 mage run the flag instead of giving it to a 2500 rated feral druid.
Also keep in mind that amongst the large alliances engaging in supercapital PvP, the amount of in game currency lost was not as extreme as you might think. Titan supercapitals with full equipment are worth roughly 4 to 5x as much as the time codes that were lost in that frigate.
And as a final note, I think the headline is backwards. The headline should read "EVE player loses" not "EVE player destroys." The aggressor certainly wasn't trying to destroy them, and had no control over whether they were destroyed. The story here is that some nitwit unsafely transported 22b isk/$1300 worth of goods in a paper thin frigate, not that the RNG gods decided to blow it up when the ship popped.

I've only played a little Eve, but I have a friend who plays it a lot, and to his mind, it would be like if Blizzard offered the same thing - game time that could be resold in game - and then you put it in your guild bank, and your guild has a policy of open recruitment with full guild bank access.
So, yes, for the poster under you: the EVE players are saying, "Don't be an idiot", because this guy had the most valuable items in the game sitting in a publicly accessible place. Worse, there's nothing wrong (as in, actionable by their GMs) with what happened, because there was no reason why he would need to have all his eggs in the same basket.
Thundrcrackr Aug 10th 2010 6:09PM
I would imagine that if you can afford to spend that much on a game then you can afford to lose it.
feniks9174 Aug 10th 2010 3:39PM
I haven't been paying attention to SW:TOR announcements lately, so space combat being included at all is a complete surprise to me. The on-rails part doesn't bother me, if anything it sounds more fun than what I'd envisioned when people were begging for it months ago.
And the idea of being a true-blood Sith makes me squee.
As for the EVE thing, I love how the EVE players can generally only respond with "Well, don't be an idiot and that won't happen".
Felix_NZ Aug 10th 2010 4:58PM
This is an Orc wielding a lightsaber. Your argument is invalid.
RogueJedi86 Aug 11th 2010 11:34AM
Really? Where's the big buck lower teeth and huge sloping eyebrows and stooped shoulders and complete inability to ever look attractive?
Thundrcrackr Aug 10th 2010 6:05PM
Ew, if space combat in SW:TOR isn't sandbox then i'm not interested.
I would rather NOT have space combat than have it be crappy WoW-like vehicle combat. Vehicle combat is one of the crappiest things they've added to WoW (the idea is good, but the implementation was horrible).
