Insider Trader: Early thoughts on professions in Cataclysm

The Cataclysm beta continues, and the crafting dudes abide. Betas can be tough when you're doing professions analysis. A lot of the itemization and various power coefficients aren't finished, so none of the gear created by crafting feels "permanent." And I don't believe any drop rate that isn't firmly sourced from live servers. In the words of many before me, "You can't take anything for granted yet." Makes it tough to know what you're looking at.
Of course, that being said, the beta is providing a lot of tantalizing hints about what professions will be like in the expansion. There have been enormous efforts to reconcile the relative power levels of each profession, and I think the developers have made huge strides in that regard.
Random stats on crafted items are making a comeback through items like Charred Dragonscale Shoulders. While these shoulders are obviously a shaman item, since hunters don't use their intellect, the random enchant portion will keep the shoulders interesting for many of our dearly beloved totem jockeys. (Heck, inevitably a hunter or two will be wearing them, despite the intellect.) Since intellect will provide direct scaling to spellpower, that random stat bonus could be very interesting.
Multiple skill-ups
We can't forget that some difficult-to-make recipes can result in more than one skill-up. While I've not seen it confirmed yet, I wouldn't be surprised to see items like the Earthsoul Boots providing multiple skill-ups. Not only is the item itself purple, the recipe requires a leatherworking of 475 to perform.
Engineering
Engineering is getting some pretty nice benefits in Cataclysm. The big news is that engineers will be getting jewelcrafting-like bonuses from cogwheels and hydraulic pumps. These engineer-only enhancements will socket onto their gear. Those of you who've been dying to roleplay engineering-based power armor soldiers will finally get your chance.
There are other enhancements for engineer's gear also, of course. Synapse Springs will enhance intellect for a period of time, and other gadgets are being added all the time. It seems as if Cataclysm will finally be the expansion in which engineers get some stat parity with other professions.
There's no announced equivalent of the Mechano-hog yet, though, which is kind of a bummer. But, like I've said before, Cataclysm is still in the beta; anything could change. We can still hope for a goblin-themed hot rod or something.
Enchanting
Enchanting has always been a workhorse profession. Ever since the days of vanilla World of Warcraft, getting your gear properly enchanted has been the way to signify yourself as a knowledgeable player. In Cataclysm, that's not really going to change.
What is going to change, however, is the addition of new procs and new enchanting dynamics. I can't help but hope that some of the proc-based enchants will make it to raiding level, instead of simply being marginalized as "leveling enchants." Weapon enchants like Landside, though, are almost definitely going to be first-tier raiding enchants, which is at least a little more interesting than plain old raw strength or agility.
Alchemy
Alchemy actually feels a lot like it did in Wrath of the Lich King, with a few relatively minor exceptions. The alchemist's stone is pretty cool, and its metric ton of stamina proves that the developers are serious about making sure everyone cares about survivability. The transmutation structure for pyrium resembles the metal from Wrath, but the krovalian gold required by engineers could be a nice touch. If the teleportation potion makes it to live servers, we could see alchemists selling quick trips to Deepholm.
These gimmicks aside, though, alchemy is alchemy. You make potions to restore mana and health, and flasks to buff various stats. Like enchanting, alchemy has always been such a staple of successful WoW careers that it's hard to improve on such a reliable craft.
Blacksmithing
As the stalwart and ineffable Matthew Rossi already pointed out, we're already seeing some awesome gear for blacksmiths to make. Even the poleaxe carries over 500 stamina. Blacksmiths are going to be incredibly busy supplying raiders and PvP players their initial gear, since it seems likely that this crafted gear will be the best stuff available before the first tier of endgame content.
We can only hold on tightly while we wait to see what else will be revealed in the beta. It's still a little early to feel like we're seeing final versions of anything, but professions seem like they'll play a vital role to kickstarting any character into the endgame. This will feel like a repeat to those of us who were busy crafters at the beginning of Wrath, but hopefully the good times will last a little longer this time.

Random stats on craftables means making an item over and over again until you get the "optimum" one (here, probably haste), which will be the one that actually sells.
For AH purposes, random stats are of dubious value. I do like more variety in the game, though. Sometimes I wish that there was some random element on item drops in raids, a la Diablo 2.

"While these shoulders are obviously a shaman item, since hunters don't use their intellect, the random enchant portion will keep the shoulders interesting for many of our dearly beloved totem jockeys. (Heck, inevitably a hunter or two will be wearing them, despite the intellect.)"
No Enhance Shaman or Hunter worth their salt would be caught dead in "Charred Dragonscale Shoulders" http://db.mmo-champion.com/s/77793/
That would be the equivalent of a Death Knight wearing spellpower plate today.
The random enchant can only be secondary stats: Haste, Hit, Crit, and Mastery.
No Enhance Shaman or Hunter would give up around 398 attack power for 60-70 Crit or any of the other secondary stats.

Good thing there are Resto and Elemental Shaman who can use all that intellect then isn't it.
Noyou Aug 11th 2010 5:41PM
Hmmm. Someone doesn't like you my friend. I'm pretty good at....*ganked while fishing in WG*
Cataca Aug 11th 2010 5:42PM
That wasn't my point. The article implies that the item will still be interesting to Enhance and even a few Hunters because of the random enchant despite the Intellect. This is not true. No matter how good the random enchant will be, this item will not be viable for Hunters or Enhance.
MusedMoose Aug 11th 2010 7:04PM
@ Cataca -
What you call "never viable", someone who hasn't been found an upgrade for their shoulders for 4+ levels might call "worth taking," even if they get no benefit from the Intellect. Please remember that opinions other than yours exist. ^_^
Cataca Aug 11th 2010 9:43PM
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I respect those opinions, but what I stated above was not -my- opinion it is a mathematical fact.
What provides more benefit for an Enhance Shaman or Hunter?
Agility = Attack Power > Intellect = Spell Power
Cataca Aug 11th 2010 10:03PM
And this holds true no matter how long you have been looking for an upgrade.
(I wont do Enhance because to prove it I'd have to start breaking out excel spreadsheets to show the gains of spellpower vs attackpower)
For a Hunter:
If you have an item with 10 Agility on it and another item with 9000 Intellect what is better?
10 Agility = 20 Attack Power. Benefit.
9000 Intellect=Nothing. Zero Benefit.
BigDumbFace Aug 11th 2010 11:34PM
@ Cataca
Everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I respect those opinions.
But your opinion is wrong.
Cataca Aug 12th 2010 12:04AM
@BigDumbFace
I have written out the mathematical proof to support my facts. Those of you that say I am wrong may have your opinions, and I respect that, but you have nothing to support those opinions as facts.
So please, show me a case where a Hunter would wear Charred Dragonscale Shoulders over any other easily available item.
I very well could be wrong but -show- me that I am wrong.
I shall dub you King of Theorycraft if you manage it.
BigDumbFace Aug 12th 2010 1:59AM
@ Cataca:
Alright, we'll play that game, mate.
Stamina = Survivability. Not a great benefit, but it helps.
Intellect = Absolutely zero gain. The one point of contention you've gotten correct.
+Random Stat (Haste, Mastery, Crit) = Oh, wow, this item might actually have a random stat that is better than the random green someone has come across via leveling.
Let's elaborate: An equal level item may well contain agility that equates to a higher AP, yet a lower crit. An equal level item may well contain agility that equates to a higher AP, yet no lower mastery. An equal level item may well contain higher agility yet no haste.
Let's push it even further: A person leveling might not have come across ANY of those items with the agility and "Oh, wow. This crafted item isn't perfect for me, but I'm still leveling and could use that mastery, haste, or crit."
Your math of "9000 int = 0 AP" is blatantly flawed, sir.
Once again, you're opinion is wrong. You can run out as many mathematical equations as you see fit, you're never going to account for every player in this game. But please, keep arguing your "mathematical proof to support your facts".
BigDumbFace Aug 12th 2010 2:04AM
TLDR: It doesn't matter how many simulations you run or how much math you attempt to interject into the randomness of an MMO: You can not account for every player in this game.
Cataca Aug 12th 2010 11:00AM
Yes the secondary stat on Charred Dragonscale Shoulders could be higher than what a player currently has but secondary stats will never give as much benefit as primary stats.
If your argument was true you would see warriors in spellpower gear today because it has more crit, or haste.
Vladeon Aug 12th 2010 11:40AM
I think the problem with your assertion is that you assume that "The article implies that the item will still be interesting to Enhance" which it really doesn't. Perhaps the author of the article is wrong in assuming that everyone who plays the game knows that it's a good shammy item for RESTO and ELEMENTAL shamans and not enhancement shamans.
And since you think that the author meant that a hunter SHOULD use this item, as per: "So please, show me a case where a Hunter would wear Charred Dragonscale Shoulders over any other easily available item" I'll let you in on a secret. It's very clear that the article is stating that only a few hunters are going to wear the item, not because they OUGHT to, but because they don't know any better. This actually happens a lot to hunters, you see them wearing strength based items with no agility on them at all. I can't tell you how many hunters I've seen wearing http://www.wowhead.com/item=42943 and no matter what I tell them, they still think that Strength is a great stat for them. This happens at level 70-80 as well, not just while leveling up. So I really don't think it's a stretch to say that a few hunters will wear this simply because they don't know any better.
wowender Aug 11th 2010 6:46PM
Do we have any word on the profession bonuses for Inscription yet? Right now it's so completely underwhelming, hopefully we get some nice perks, but I haven't seen/heard of anything yet.
Zaros Aug 11th 2010 3:54PM
I was thinking that instead of alchemy stones they give alchemists trinket enchants. Like 40% bonus to all potions and their duration as and enchantment to any trinket. Would be kind of nice.
