WoW Rookie: Collective wisdom
New around here? WoW Rookie has your back! Get all our collected tips, tricks and tactics for new players in the WoW Rookie Guide.
Let's face it: Crowdsourcing is king. Every company that beta tests its products (hello, Cataclysm!) knows the benefits of having hundreds, thousands or even millions of creative (and not-so-creative) minds plinking away at its features. If we put our heads together ...
Today's WoW Rookie rounds up recent posts at WoW.com that spawned info-rich comments ready to mined by us newbies. Before we dive in, though, I'd like to remind everyone (even you old hands out there who happen to be reading along) to keep sending in your favorite pointers for new players -- things it took you months to realize when you first started playing, things you wish you'd known back in the day. Send 'em in to lisa@wow.com, and we'll run one every week in WoW Rookie.
One more piece of business: Got a question or wondering about something in WoW that has you stumped? WoW Rookie is opening a mailbag section especially for new and leveling players. Send in your questions to lisa@wow.com.
Now, with thanks and much love to our prolific Breakfast Topic commenters, let us unleash the wisdom of the masses!

The best class choice for new players Now that I've seen first hand how easily a new player was able to learn to play a paladin and how quickly she got comfortable with it, I would personally recommend it as the default starter class for any new players. Now I ask you: What do you think is the easiest class for a new player to start and why?

Tank anxiety and tanking tips for beginners Sometimes, people are not as kind or cooperative as I would like. As a tank, I need to learn how to harden myself against the criticism from others (or else learn to live with the nervous tic that I am convinced is developing). That has been the biggest obstacle to overcoming my tanking anxiety.

All those little things you wish you'd known Recently I have begun to realize that there are many people just like me who let the simplest nuances of the game escape them for some reason or another. What things are you embarrassed to admit that you didn't know until you were well entrenched in the game? Don't worry, we'll never tell (wink, wink).

From Salerina of Exodar:
Make sure to have Projected Textures turned on! [Hit Escape > Video > Effects, then look at the bottom and make sure the Projected Textures box is checked.] Many players turn it off to improve performance, but leave it on! It lets you see important things on the ground like fire, Death and Decay and all sorts of bad stuff you have to stay away from in order to stay alive.

The shame is over half of the readers won't get that reference.

Holy crap, if there are folks that won't get BIll & Ted references... I *am* getting old... /sadpanda
Drakkenfyre Aug 12th 2010 9:53PM
You are asking that of people who go
"OMG, THE JOKER REFERENCED WOW BY SAYING IMMOVABLE OBJECT AND IRRISISTABLE FORCE!"
It's kind of like the kids who think the Pyro's "Haduken" taunt from Team Fortress 2 is a reference to DragonBall Z's "Kamehameha" instead of, you know, Street Fighter 2.

He also likes... baseball.

You know, I used to live not 2 miles from the Circle K where Bill and Ted get the TimeBooth from Rufus. When I learned of this fact I walked that 2 miles in the rain just so I could get a bag of chips there, then I hunted down where some of the other filming locations were with some friends of mine. I even applied for work at the water park they filmed the Waterloo scenes at! Kinda bummed I didn't get the job but it was awesome going in and seeing the slide is still there. I grew up on Bill and Ted so it was like a dream come true for me! :D

It's weird, I happened to be thinking about the movie today. Mostly missing the days when PG movies could contain the kind of thing Bill & Ted did.

@Drakkenfyre
To be fair, Ryu's Hadouken *is* a reference to Goku's Kamehameha.
Drakkenfyre Aug 13th 2010 12:16PM
You are kidding, right?
Street Fighter predates DragonBall Z, and the hadouken is a legendary ball of spirit energy from yourself. The idea of it predates you and me. DragonBall Z is NOT some mystical thing that all references must be derived from. Tossing a fireball is not a reference to DragonBall Z, else Mario would be referencing it every time he picked up a Fire Flower.

I would recommend a hunter. You don't have to care for anything, if you level as a Beast Mastery hunter your pet does almost everything for you. That is also the reason why so many hunters are really bad players. My first char was a hunter. :p

Very few things are as epic as Beethoven rocking out on an electic keyboard at the mall.

Oh my...that image. Please don't tell me that's what the gold site hackers are capable of now.
Icewalker Aug 13th 2010 8:56AM
Marshal, that is EXACTLY what they are capable of now. They are also capable of synchronized marching and movements, they fall asleep in shapes of perfect letters on the ground, and somehow manage to make letters in midair too, all of them just laying down. The last display I saw had upwards of 50 fake toons in starting gear in the assembly.

That picture is very interesting. My main is on the US-Quel'dorei server. I ported to SW one night and saw exactly those "character" facing the same direction in the exact same area of the city. I saw it and immediately was like "...ok.....what is going on here?"
