Cataclysm Beta: Thrall receives a new model
Another build hit Cataclysm beta realms this evening, bringing a whole slew of new data into the game. Certainly the most eyecandylicious is Thrall's new model, which you can see above. He's abandoned his Stockade Pauldrons for a more old-school shaman look, passing on the brutal, raw elemental aesthetics we've been seeing in the armor given to player characters for the last couple of years.
My significant other suggested that the prayer beads around Thrall's neck make him look like Street Fighter's Dhalsim (but green and beefy), but come on. Everyone knows Dhalsim wears skulls and not beads. Get with the program, here!

Just like Jaina, I liked that Thrall used a regular player model, Sure, his armor could have used an updating, I liked the idea that he looked like one of us, in the "he isn't a completely different species" idea (see the new Garrosh.)
Jaina's outfit looks nice. I still don't like the chubby-faced angry hooker look face they gave her.

Okay, gotta say it, Thrallsim anyone?

I believe I speak for us all when I say "FINALLY!"

Why doesn't Thrall run around with Doom hammers gear anymore? for me it doesn't make any sence...
Dril Aug 14th 2010 8:07AM
I believe it's because Doomhammer gave it to him (or Thrall picked it up somewhere, it's been ages since I read the book) as a symbol of being the Warchief, and since he's to the Warchief anymore he doesn't need to/would be silly wearing it, especially as it's a poignant reminder of the Old Horde.

Poor, poor Thrall. Someday he'll finally get a chance to wear bad ass gear.

Posted about Thrall's new look on my blog as well:

SInce Thrall looks more like a monk, does this mean that Monks (Runemasters) may be considered for a hero class at some point?
Suzaku Aug 14th 2010 4:30PM
Thrall is dressed like a Farseer from Warcraft III. Probably because he IS a Farseer from Warcraft III. He's a shaman, and has absolutely nothing to do with Monks or Runemasters.
This is the garb he wears as leader of the Earthen Ring. He's set aside Doomhammer's Plate because that's a symbol of the warchief.
Also, they already considered Runemaster for Wrath of the Lich King (as well as Necromancer). They decided against those classes and instead applied traits from both to the Death Knight class. I'd suggest giving up on Runemaster.

Could it possibly be then that Shamans were influenced by Monks in real life?
I'm just noting the similarities of Thrall's costume to that of monks in other video games like Street Fighter, Samurai Showdown, and many many others.
Heck, even Blizzard's own Monk (http://us.blizzard.com/diablo3/characters/monk.xml) has a number of striking visual similarities to Thrall's look. You cannot deny that.

Thrall's new look is a strange mix between silly and cute, don't you think?
Josho Aug 14th 2010 4:49AM
I am not a fan. He reminds me of Gul'dan's orc model in Warcraft 3.

New Thrall's model reminds me of this comic:

BLING.
Vaeku Aug 14th 2010 7:44AM
Reminds me of Nobundo. Getting back to basics?
Siddha Aug 14th 2010 8:33AM
I love his outfit. Great leaders don't need to show their rank or display power externaly, everybody know and respect them. This model is shaman like: humble, wise and seer.
Dragonrose Aug 14th 2010 9:14AM
Why is everyone saying he's a Shaman? I thought he was a Far Seer?
Jamz Aug 14th 2010 9:36AM
yes he is a shaman. if u fought alongside him in hyjal summit, he summons spirit wolves (pre-WotLK). if u did battle for UC with him, he does chain lightning, lava burst, and thunderstorm
moisen27 Aug 14th 2010 10:04AM
Farseer is a title of honor for shamans of immense ability and power.
Suzaku Aug 14th 2010 4:30PM
Far Seer is to Shaman as Arch Druid is to Druid.
Jamz Aug 14th 2010 9:35AM
"This orc, is he mortal?"
Thrall finally looks like a shaman and a badass one nonetheless. Horde shamans ftw
