IRVINE, Calif., Aug 17, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE)
Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced plans for a limited-release Collector's Edition of World of Warcraft(R): Cataclysm(TM), the third expansion for the world's most popular subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game,* World of Warcraft. The special Collector's Edition package, which will only be available at retail stores, will include the following exclusive bonus items in addition to the game disc:
-- Art of the Cataclysm art book, featuring 176 pages of never-before-seen images from the archives of the Blizzard Entertainment cinematics department and the World of Warcraft development team, as well as progressive visuals from multiple stages of development.
-- Exclusive in-game pet: he may not be a breaker of worlds just yet, but Lil' Deathwing will still proudly accompany heroes on their struggle to save Azeroth from his much, much larger counterpart.
-- Behind-the-scenes DVD with over an hour of developer interviews and commentaries, as well as a special Warcraft(R) retrospective examining the rich gaming history of the Warcraft universe.
-- Soundtrack featuring 10 epic new tracks from Cataclysm, including exclusive bonus tracks.
-- Special-edition mouse pad depicting Deathwing menacing the ravaged continents of Azeroth.
-- World of Warcraft Trading Card Game cards, including a 60-card starter deck from the Wrathgate series, two extended-art cards, and two Collector's Edition-exclusive hero cards, marking the first appearance of goblin and worgen heroes in the TCG.
The first two World of Warcraft expansions, The Burning Crusade(R) and Wrath of the Lich King(R), each shattered PC game sales records upon their release. In Cataclysm, the face of Azeroth will be forever altered by the return of the corrupted Dragon Aspect Deathwing. Players will explore once-familiar areas of the world that have now been reshaped by the devastation and filled with new adventures. In an effort to survive the planet-shattering cataclysm, two new playable races -- worgen and goblins -- will join the struggle between the Alliance and the Horde. As players journey to the new level cap of 85, they'll discover newly revealed locations, acquire new levels of power, and come face to face with Deathwing in a battle to determine the fate of the world.
The beta test for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is currently underway. To set up a Battle.net account and sign up for a chance to participate, please visit the official Battle.net website at http://www.battle.net.
The World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Collector's Edition will be available on DVD-ROM for Windows(R) XP/Windows Vista(R)/Windows(R) 7 and Macintosh(R) at a suggested retail price of $79.99. The release date and other details for the game will be announced in the months ahead. Well, now we know what the Lil'Deathwing model is for!
SunGod228 Aug 17th 2010 1:16PM
IDK look @ the official Cata:CE site the model isn't the same!!!!

razion Aug 17th 2010 1:20PM
Then what on earth was the other data-mined Lil' Deathwing model for. . . it's not the default for the black dragon-flight baby-whelps, is it? Well, now I'm curious.
WNxSajuukCor Aug 17th 2010 1:28PM
It's probably a placeholder graphic on the official site. The graphic could have been drawn up before the model was complete.
Fierna Aug 17th 2010 1:38PM
The whelp on the site is the pet we received for the WOTLK collector edition
Drakkenfyre Aug 17th 2010 1:47PM
The pic on the site is Frosty the Frost Whelp, with a red color scheme. It isn't the final pet, like has been said, probably a placeholder.
I would be a little upset to get a Collector's Edition pet that was simply a color-swap from the last one.
razion Aug 17th 2010 2:01PM
Not Frosty...
Earlier this year (or last year, could've been that long ago) there was a data-mined image that wow.com covered from mmo-champion that showed basically a very tiny deathwing. That's the Lil' Deathwing I was inclined we were receiving, but apparently not! So my question is: What is THAT mini-deathwing model for, then?
pepolicious Aug 17th 2010 3:10PM
@WNxSajuukCor - I suspect you're correct. The copyright date on the official page linked by SunGod228 above says 2009, indicating that it was prepped well in advance (though it could just be an error). The new Lil' Deathwing model making the rounds lately wasn't datamined until recently. Either way, a re-colored Frosty is unwelcome!

They've either updated the graphic since you all posted, or you all didn't notice the Lil' iron jaw on that Lil' Deathwing.
Ashwan Aug 17th 2010 4:55PM
Yep, image has been updated. Refresh the page a few times.
Arkki Aug 17th 2010 12:24PM
Honestly, not a bad price for the contents
Faith Trust Aug 17th 2010 1:07PM
As a constant buyer for Blizzard's CE I can say that its the same thing the others had.
Only for Cataclysm, they also had the same cost, so no news here.
I would've been surprised if they had added something different like the SC2 one with cross game benefits..
Phaelan Aug 17th 2010 1:27PM
Thank God for Pell Grants, I wanted the Wrath CE but couldn't get it. I will get the CE for Cat and my Pell Grant will be disrupted right around the time of it's release.
I think it's got some really cool stuff, the TCG cards and the Music are well worth the extra cost.
Faith Trust Aug 17th 2010 1:33PM
This Pell Grant's that you are talking about is the scholarship thing?
Luftwaffles Aug 17th 2010 1:40PM
@arkki
Yeah I'm surprised.. I would've bet my next paycheck it was gonna be $100 at the very least. Can't wait for my minipet + chance at a loot card!
Neuropox Aug 17th 2010 1:56PM
Compared to the SC2 pack with all the trimmings i feel slightly underwhelmed, but i guess it is just a WoW Expac so i guess i ask too much. Plus it is $20 less!
Now to see if gamestop offers beta keys w/ preorders :P
Drakkenfyre Aug 17th 2010 3:32PM
Neuropox,
Both games come with a CD sountrack
Both games come with a Behind the Scenes DVD
Both games came with an Art book
Both games came with a pet
StarCraft 2 came with a USB drive and StarCraft and Brood War, and special portraits/decals that don't apply because World of WarCraft doesn't use portraits like StarCraft 2 does.
And it came with a comic book
The two are pretty much similiar, and like you noted, it was $20 more.

Not a bad price but its this that's has me down: "available only at retail stores"
So... we have to do the "waste time camping out in a line for HOURS, thing". I think that almost borders on inhumane. Do we really have to do that this year? :X
I did that LAST year and I still didn't manage to get one of the 5 collector editions that came to my small town. I waited for hours, for nothing because at the last second, someone ahead of me was apparently "saving a spot" for a friend I never knew about, and they finally showed up.
What a waste of time. This is supposed to be enjoyable and fun, not a horrific ordeal.
Do you know how annoying and embarrassing it was, as a 33 year old NORMAL looking female, to be in that line? The sad fact that I was NOT a dog-face, meant I had to endure hours lusty gazes, and "Loud enough to catch the gist of" whispers from some unsanitary guys I would walk across a street to avoid.
/sadface No... I guess it will be the normal edition for me. I just... I can't DO that again. A year later and the anger is still lodged in the back of my throat over the last time. I... guess I just... *sigh* don't want it bad enough. bye bye mini-deathwing. You looked cool.
Sadpanda Aug 17th 2010 4:22PM
EDIT: last time vs last year. I'm aware it was 2008, it felt like it hadn't been that long but I guess it was. :/
Meh...Need more coffee and edit button.
Drakkenfyre Aug 17th 2010 4:43PM
Don't pay any attention to the "only available at retail stores" thing, Amazon.com and GameStop already have pages up to preorder it.
Usually they mean "Can't download the Collector's Edition", because some people think you can buy a Collector's Edition online, download it, and then all the physical stuff is shipped to you.
