Cataclysm needs a "couple more months" before release
German entertainment site Gamona landed an interview with World of Warcraft Game Director Tom Chilton at Gamescom 2010. They cover a myriad of topics including Tol Barad, guild leveling, the state of the various classes in the Cataclysm beta and the reasoning behind Facebook integration into their games. But perhaps the most interesting piece of data is that according to Tom Chilton, Cataclysm needs "a couple more months" of work. While that might seem terribly obvious to some, it's the closest thing to an official timetable we've heard from Blizzard or a Blizzard employee beyond the aim for releasing in 2010.
A "couple more months" would set the launch firmly after BlizzCon and leaning closer to the holiday season. Mike Morhaime recently confirmed that the expansion was still on track for a 2010 release, so we're most likely looking at a November or December launch. I, for one, look forward to another middle-of-winter midnight release.
Head on over to Gamona.de for the full video interview.

that will give me time to finish up my shadowmourne before i put it away in the bank when cata comes out
dpoyesac Aug 18th 2010 7:08PM
Or.... you can ALMOST finish it up and then take the final step right after 4.0.1 drops, so your Shadowmourne counts toward your guild 'We Are Legendary' achievement.

As long as such quests dont get wiped -.-
Drakkenfyre Aug 18th 2010 10:01PM
I believe the Achievement counts where or not you get them after it goes in.
If you had Thunderfury sitting in your bank, you didn't have to get another one to get the Achievement after they were put in.

Blue post in that link sayin that it has to be done -after- and with your guild.

Oh, ouch.
Sucks if you already did it then. As far as I know, the Thunderfury quest isn't repeatable.

this makes me happy as well. I like a winter release b/c I will have the time to really get into the new expansion. Woot.

I hope it's released well before Christmas holidays (mid to late November), I'd like to have time for other stuff during them. :-p

November 17.

Midnight openings in winter aren't so enjoyable when you live in Iceland! Nearly froze to death waiting in line for TBC. D:

I'm dreading a winter release. Right in the middle of finals. Ugh.

Call me crazy, but I think they'll launch just before (like, JUST before) BlizzCon. It simply doesn't make sense to me for them to do it after, for maximum hype potential. And 2 months, exactly, puts it at 18th October which is, you guessed it, just before BlizzCon. Or perhaps I'm dreaming and taking a couple too literally. We'll see. I hope I'm right, since then it'll be reasonably soon.
Fizzl Aug 18th 2010 6:48PM
I see your 18th October and raise you a 12th of November for me in the UK (A few days earlier in the US)
Why? Check the date wrath came out, it all fits! ;)
Dril Aug 18th 2010 6:53PM
I'm in the UK as well :P I thought the archaic concept of Europe and America getting different dates went with WotLK? :P
The only reason I think they'll release before BlizzCon is because then they can announce their new MMO while everyone's still hyped about Cata, in addition to keeping up the Diablo momentum, so that the next few years are a Blizzard-dominated OMG WANT! list.
razion Aug 18th 2010 7:12PM
Nah, I wouldn't call you crazy.
I actually remember from last Blizzcon them telling us we'd be "complaining Goblin rogues are overpowered come next Blizzcon". This lead us to believe Cataclysm was at latest, early-mid October--looks like the prediction's holding a bit of water, now, although arguably cutting it a bit close for comfort.
The Angry Intern Aug 18th 2010 7:13PM
Ahh, but remember....This year Nov 23rd is a Tuesday, just like it was the day the game came out in 2004. My money is on Nov 23rd. And it will be after Blizzcon. That will be one of the big announcements at the convention, the release date. It makes no sense to release it right before.
johnthediver Aug 18th 2010 7:19PM
I would be ridiculous PO'd should Cata come out just before Blizzcon, that would put me 4 days behind leveling to 85 with my guild while I travel to LA from Northern CA.
julian Aug 18th 2010 7:23PM
The beta is just too buggy and unfinished for me to even hope for a 2010 release. I'm guessing a january 2011 or even a spring 2011 release. Even hoping... I really don't want Cataclysm to be unfinished even the slightest.
Lannden Aug 18th 2010 8:34PM
Well October 18ths my birthday. *crosses fingers*
flawless Aug 18th 2010 9:17PM
I see your unfounded dates, and raise you an unfounded - yet curiously intriguing - November 1st.
1/11/10 or 11/1/10.
Funky dates aside, it's something to watch for. Honest.
