The Daily Quest: Killin' things

Here at WoW.com, we're on a Daily Quest (which we try to do every day, honest) to bring you interesting, informative and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.
Don't mind me, strange squishy silver blob thing. I'm just a box. A box full of stabbing. Speaking of killing, there were a few pretty interesting posts around the blogosphere recently that discussed the topic of "virtual murder" and the habit of killing things in video games:
- Tobold's MMORPG blog asks why there's so much virtual murder out there.
- The Noisy Rogue ponders the idea of killing's becoming utterly mundane.
- Jinxed Thoughts wonders what would happen if you could kill anyone in game, regardless of faction.
- On a happier, less murderous note, Big Bear Butt would like to tell you about a few of his favorite things.

Well since this is happy blog plugging land...
"Tales from the Void" has tackled a few "guildy" topics this week, with the release of the guild leveling system. Given the usual tone and angle of the blog, our entries are from the perspective of the small (really small) friendly guild, a hot topic in the wake of guild experience and the ways it will alter the game:

Noooo, Charles! Get outta ma head, Charles!
I logged in earlier, went to check out the shaders (still broken!) on the mercury pools, and picked up the quest to kill the ascendant. Spooky.

I find it interesting that so many people handwave away the concepts of murder in games like this because "it's only a game". They almost immediately follow up with how they aren't anything like the character they play, how they're the nicest person you'll ever meet, and this Mr. Hyde only ever comes out within the fantasy world they play in.
It's interesting that, in a world without the sort of laws we all have to abide by, someone can go from a nice person to a bloodthirsty maniac.

Personally, I'm of the belief we NEED games like this to remain nice in real life. A "safe" outlet for aggression and all that.

Another interesting link:
http://www.crunchywow.com/blog/2010/08/02/more-on-pve-pvp-realms-playstyle/
calculates the amounts by which people on PvP realms do less killing (of NPCs), questing and exploration - which they compensate by killing more players!

Just stumbled across this on Twitter and seems Gaming Lives have a competition at the moment to win a beta key for Cataclysm. Ends on Monday so chances of winning should be quite good.

Wolfshead has a great article up from a while back on this:

He referenced an article I wrote here:

MMOs can be so much more as "virtual worlds" than mere murder simulators.
