Addon Spotlight: Loremaster addons

Happy Thursday, addon nerds. I hope your week is going as splendidly as mine is. Why is my week going splendidly, you ask? I decided to begin the Loremaster achievement process on my new warrior in preparation for Cataclysm. Potentially, only a few more months remain until the world goes kaboom, and I'd like to have that title ready to roll -- which, conveniently, brings me to the topic of this week's Addon Spotlight.
This week, Addon Spotlight brings you the core collection of addons that make Loremaster less of a giant pain in the butt. For a comprehensive Loremaster strategy, I recommend, nay, compel you, to read Lisa Poisso's excellent Loremaster rookie article. I am here to give you all the information on the addons that make this achievement a snap. Let's read some quest text together! Awww, yeah!
Before we jump into the Loremaster addons, I wanted to give you all a little piece of my own history with the Loremaster achievement and a small anecdote. Back when I leveled the character that currently has Loremaster, my paladin created on launch day of The Burning Crusade, the dungeon finder was not implemented. The fastest way to level 60 at the time was a rigorous questing regiment that had you maximizing experience gains through easy-to-do quests. When the Loremaster achievement came around, I was already well on my way to completion. After scouring each zone with no option to show low-level quests, I eventually completed the achievement. No addons, no low-level quest options and no sanity remaining.
Fast-forward to today -- a wealth of options open up for the aspiring Loremaster. With the ability to ping the server for completed quest information and addons that do amazing things with Wowhead data, Loremaster has never been more easy and fun. My warrior, the current Loremaster candidate, is armed to the teeth with addons to make this whole ordeal as simple as possible, and I'd like to pass on that knowledge to you. Sit back; it's still a bumpy ride.

Every single quest
Everyquest is the addon glue that holds the Loremaster achievement process together. This addon is the main tool that you will use to accomplish this grand task. What does Everyquest do? Simply, the addon pings the server for your completed quest data. Then, the quests you have completed and not completed are shown to you by zone. Every single quest is available at your fingertips. With the completion data now part of the addon's database, you can begin to go down the list and find the quests that still require completion in each zone.
Everyquest does much more than just tell you what quests are in game, however. Daily quests get a counter to see how many times you've completed each, each completed quest is timestamped with data on when it was completed, and, as we will see in a few moments, the addon works smoothly with other addons aimed to help you complete the Loremaster achievement. Everyquest is an awesome addon to have, even if you aren't working on your Loremaster title.
Download Everyquest at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].
Feeling a little lightheaded
Everyquest is an awesome addon, but wouldn't it be wonderful to have all of the quest information straight from Wowhead available when you click on a quest in Everyquest's display? What? That exists?! Of course it does! Lightheaded is the masterful companion addon to Everyquest that will open up the quest's data and comments from Wowhead right next to the Everyquest window. Coordinates are available for quest givers and objectives, helpful community tips are included, and now you'll never have to alt-tab out of the game again to find out quest information.
If you haven't already seen the pattern, the addons centered around Loremaster and questing build on top of each other, like a Loremaster fighting Megazord. Everyquest is the cookie inside, and Lightheaded is the gooey chocolatey coating outside.
Clicking on a quest in Everyquest will open up the quest's information in a separate dialogue box next to Everyquest. It's that simple.
Download Lightheaded at [WoWInterface].

There are two more addons that, when paired with Everyquest and Lightheaded, make the Loremaster experience even easier! Loremaster, a very conveniently named addon, adds some extra information to the quest text window, giving the player status on whether a quest counts towards the Loremaster achievement. I ran into the problem of going on long quest detours to find out later they never really counted for the achievement, so Loremaster would have been an excellent tool to have.
Loremaster integrates seamlessly with Everyquest as well. Simply use the command /lm eqignore to set all of the quests that Loremaster deems ineligible for the achievement as ignored in Everyquest. A simple /lm equnignore clears this list. It is simple, effective and downright useful.
Download Loremaster at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].
Finally, complete this crazy process with TomTom, the ubiquitous arrow location addon. TomTom syncs up brilliantly with Lightheaded -- one click on location coordinates spawns a TomTom arrow pointing directly to that location. Seriously, how could this be better for the Loremaster achievement? The locations of quest givers, mobs, quest items and points of interest are instantly at your fingertips.
Download TomTom at [Curse] or [WoWInterface].
So there you have it. Loremaster is an incredibly engaging and fun achievement that I believe everyone should do at least once. Azeroth is rich with lore, awesome quest text and genuine surprises. Check it all out before a giant hole gets torn in the middle of it and everything gets set on fire.

I am sorely tempted to get Loremaster on my main, so see all of the old world before it does go up in flames... I just might go for it, after seeing all the tools here :o

Your first two comments almost rhyme...
The tired factor is kicking in now..lol
Oldbear Aug 19th 2010 5:46PM
I've been doing the same on my main and a few alts. I want to see the world before its' destroyed.

Nice guide. I didnt know about the addons that are Loremaster friendly. And I was wondering when they would come up with an addon that gathers your completed quest data as Loremaster would be more or less a daunting task without it. In fact, because no such addon existed is what has kept me from being a Loremaster.
*Loremaster acheivement now in progress.*

I used both EveryQuest and Wowhead Looter (Wowhead's client addon) - both were updated when Blizzard released server API to query completed quests.
Wowhead Looter works slightly differently in that it is also Wowhead's data collection addon. You type /wl collect, it collects a bunch of stuff, and then you use Wowhead's client app to upload back to wowhead and connect to your wowhead account.
The good thing I like about wowhead's approach is that you can then browse the incomplete quests on your character profile, and everything is in the same web page. You can even tick quests to ignore. e.g. world event quests that don't count, or repeatables.
The part I don't like about wowhead's approach is that it is out of the game, so it tends to be not as "instant" as EveryQuest. But when I was hunting the last 50 quests for Kalimdor that didn't seem to be a huge issue for me. I was plotting my quest chains at work, ignoring the quests that are very rare or hard to find. ;-)

There's a screenshot on that page showing you what it looks like at the world level and have a high level view of which zone still has lots of incomplete quests. You can zoom into each region.
I think I started with EveryQuest and ended up completing loremaster mostly with Wowhead Looter - so I thought I'd recommend them.

wowhead looter + wowhead.com's web interface is what I used.
I noticed that all the other add-ons had a lot of quests that were listed incorrectly and required manual sorting of some type.
And then after I figured out which quests I would be going for... id end up at wowhead anyway to get information on where to go.
So it was definitely a huge bonus to have wowhead make my remaining quest list... then simply click on the quest to be redirected to user comments, map locations, pre-requisites and listings of the entire chains.
I strongly recommend everyone to try just the wowhead client! A person can even make their characters profile public and let their friends see how they are doing. It helps a lot if a loremaster can see which quests you have left and guide you to easy quest lines.

I love this achievement - I got mine on my main in October 2008 before the number of quests for Kalimdor was nerfed, in the same fashion you did without any help other than wowhead. It's the achievement, other than the Exalted, that I'm most proud of.
Caz Aug 19th 2010 2:24PM
Derp. I mean I got the Kalimdor part of it in October - I didn't get full Loremaster until March - when Northrend was actually in the game.

I've been working on Loremaster for a week or two now, and I am very glad to say I've been using these addons the whole time! They really do help a ton, especially Loremaster and EQ
arixian Aug 19th 2010 2:26PM
I tried Everyquest once on one of my 80's as I am still 9 quest shy of the Nagrand achievement and can not find anymore quest to do however I found that it didn't recognize any of the quest I had completed prior to loading the add-on so it was basically useless unless I wanted to spend the time to manually select completed assuming I could remember them all based just on the quest name. Has this been changed? If so then I will gladly try it again.
I also tried TomTom while leveling an alt but found it annoying as it often wanted me to do things in a different order than I felt like doing them in. I realize maybe my way wasn't as efficient but I still wanted the freedom without the hassle of constantly being told by an addon I was doing it wrong.
I have been using Lightheaded for awhile and consider it an essential add-on.
Thanks for the write up and also to anyone that replies to my question about Everyquest.

If you go to the EveryQuest options there should be a Server Query - it'll grab your completed quest history from the WoW servers and populate its list. Worked for me, anyway...
Samutz Aug 19th 2010 2:40PM
If you do a server query (in the settings), it'll find out which ones you've completed for you. You may have to query more than once. When I was in Terokkar it hadn't detected all the quests I completed a few years ago until I did a 2nd query.
arixian Aug 19th 2010 2:44PM
Thank you for the replies. I remember doing one query and still seeing a lot of quest that I knew I had completed not showing correctly so perhaps I just needed to do the 2nd query. I will re-install it and give it a try.
Is there a way to manage your add-ons remotely? I love reading about cool add-ons in these articles but I read it while I'm at work so then by the time I get home (I work late) the article is buried on page 3 or 4 of the site and I have a hard time finding it to remember which addon I was so juiced about earlier in the day. Would be cool if curse offered a way for me to install it remotely or que it to install the next time I logged in at home.

Everyquest has been updated since Blizzard released the API to gather completed quest information from the server a couple of patches ago. All you have to do now is click a button and EQ will update which quests are completed.
Also, TomTom is just an arrow and coordinate addon. It doesn't do anything unless you or another addon tells it to point somewhere. If it is pointing where you don't want it to point then another addon is at fault - not TomTom itself.
marauder Aug 19th 2010 2:51PM
Newer versions of Everyquest have a "query server" feature. As briefly mentioned in the article, it pings the server to gather a list of previously completed quests. There are instructions for the server query feature in the description on WoWInterface and Curse.
As for TomTom, it sounds like you were using QuestHelper as well. I turned QH off for the same reason, but TomTom by itself only points to waypoints. Used with Lightheaded, it'll point to the location of any NPC or coordinate you click on.
arixian Aug 19th 2010 2:52PM
You are correct I was using QuestHelper with TomTom and I disabled both so in light of this new information I will give TomTom another try as well. Thank you all for your responses.
Shakerag Aug 19th 2010 3:02PM
arixian: I just copy the url of these articles and paste them into an email, and then email myself before I'm going to leave work. So no hunting for info when I get home at night :)
Artificial Aug 19th 2010 3:20PM
@arixian & Shakerag: lol
Silly me, I thought about using a brilliant new invention called paper, combined with another wonderful device known as a pencil, in order to write (an activity kinda like typing, but without a keyboard) something called a "note". Although these technologies are wonderful, it's nice to know there's an alternative to remembering bits of information for later...
arixian Aug 19th 2010 3:23PM
Artificial - you mean like a post it note? a:) i'd just lose it, and b:) don't you know that's bad for the environment. How many more trees must die before you change? No wonder all the druids hate you (ok I made that part up, but it could be true).
Piper Aug 19th 2010 5:15PM
Ah, completing Nagrand. It's a pain when some of the Nagrand quests start in Shadowmoon Valley and take you back to the demon hunter with the netherdrake in Nagrand (I'm blanking on his name).
