Raid Rx: 5 reasons why you're not getting healed

Every week, Raid Rx will help you quarterback your healers to victory! Your host is Matt Low, the grand pooh-bah of World of Matticus and a founder of No Stock UI, a WoW blog for all things UI-, macro- and addon-related. If you're looking for more healing advice, check out the Plus Heal community.
You ever reach a point in the game where you just want to throw your arms up in the air, throw in the towel and cease all casting of spells related to healing? I'm not ashamed to admit that I've been there myself on more than one occasion. Not exactly my finest moments, I'll admit. Moments of frustration aren't exactly legitimate reasons not to heal. But as a healer, you'll come across moments in your healing careers where you have to make a split-second decision. Will it be action or inaction? Choose carefully, because the well-being of the raid depends on it. Sometimes inaction (or at least, not healing) is the correct choice. Besides, you might have some druids around that can bring players back to full with Rebirth. (If you're looking for some tips on the ideal usage, here's a guest post I wrote on Rebirth procedures from the perspective of the druid, the raid leader and the player getting the resurrection.)
Anyway, here are some serious reasons to stop healing someone.
A disconnected player
Let me share a story to help illustrate my point. It was a Monday night. We had 15 minutes left before the raid was going to be called. We were staring down the Lich King himself. My guild fought furiously past his Shambling Horrors, his annoying Val'kyrs; we sidestepped the Raging Spirits he summoned. When we hit the last phase with the Vile Spirits, we were able to skillfully dodge his Defiles.
Except for a lone mage.
That lone mage was the target of a Defile. The rest of the raid moved away from him, but he stood there in the puddle all by himself. I started healing him, trying to give him some time to get out. After a few seconds, I realized he really wasn't doing anything. He must have disconnected. So I did the only logical thing I could think of to contain the Defile: I immediately commanded my healers to stop healing him altogether. He fell over moments later, and the crisis was over. (Until our bear tank backed up and fell over the ledge. Thank goodness the other tank was quick enough on the taunt.)
In most cases, disconnected players won't need the healing. They're as good as dead until they get back online, and there is no guarantee of that happening unless you hear them say that they're attempting to reconnect.
Like most rules, there are some exceptions. If the disconnected player happens to be the tank and has a good amount of threat, you just might be able to salvage it until things stabilize again.
Way out of range
Did one of your players stray way out of range? Not much you can do unless you want to chase after them to help preserve them. If your raid is one side of the area and Millhouse the mage happens to be on the other, he might be dead by the time you get into range, anyway. You may as well just not worry about it and let him go. If the opportunity presents itself, pop a Rebirth.
A called wipe
This is the most common reason to stop healing. The raid leader calls a wipe and wants to restart the encounter again with a fresh crew. At this point, stop healing the tanks, stop healing yourself and stop healing anyone else. Go run into the closest fire.
Someone else needs the healing
The last reason is one of those micromanagement-type decisions in which you're given the option of healing either A or B. A must be kept alive, but B is the one who is in imminent danger. But you know that if you switch off of A, A is going to die. Why? Who knows. Maybe you're the only healer left alive after the rest of them died for some freak reason, and the raid leader decided to keep going.
If that happens, then guess what? You're the last line of defense! Choose wisely, and pray that the rest of the surviving members can do their best to stay alive!
Tactical reasons
Generally, this is considered bad practice to rely on a person's dying and using a Soulstone or a Rebirth to revive them again. I'll only mention it because it is an option, for now. I remember reading in a blue post somewhere that this was something that the developers did not want to encourage.
A great encounter that helps illustrate this example is Professor Putricide. If your raid reaches phase 3, one of your members will be afflicted with Unbound Plague. Instead of going through the motions of bouncing and rotating the plague, you might be better off sentencing that player to his doom and relying on the brute force of the rest of your raid to take down the professor.
Again, that's a last option to be considered ... but it is still an option.
Remember, you still have Rebirth and Soulstones as tools to help with raid deaths if you need them. Don't be like me and forget that your raid has warlocks. Or that warlocks exist. Abuse their stones!

"You ever reach a point in the game where you just want to throw your arms up in the air, throw in the towel and cease all casting of spells related to healing?"
I feel like that all the time, but then I realize that my pet didn't do anything wrong.

Speaking of tanks tanking while disconnected... our Pally tank disconnected yet successfully tanked Putricide one night until he could reconnect. It was one of the coolest and funniest things we have done as a guild.

Also occasionally funny is dpsing while disconnected. On the trash before Sindragosa one night I'd popped Starfall and started Hurricane when I lost connection to WoW. Over vent a few moments later, I hear "the moonkin's disconnected, HOW IS HE TOPPING DAMAGE?"

Best tank D/C story ever:
If you go watch Paragon's World First Heroic Lich King 25 kill, you will see a small part in the beginning where a little chat thing pops up and says "MT Disconnects!" on phase 1... right after that, their feral dps druid gets a shadow trap; fortunately the tank was just about a yard outside of the shadow trap area, and he was able to relog really fast, and keep going.
The video then says "Close one ;)"
By the way, the video series of that fight is by far the best raid video I've ever seen. Here's a link to part one of the videos: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fh7kQkQkLik
Most epic tank d/c save evar.

Similar story to the others here: pally tank d/c'd about 30 seconds into Marrowgar encounter, he held aggro over the offtank through the entire d/c. We all had a good laugh about that.

We did this last week actually. Our Mage was having computer problems and, because of the ooze all over the floor in P3, was dropping down to 1-2 FPS. On the next attempt she volunteered to take the plague from whoever got it and die in a corner.

May I add not healing the DPS that insists on standing in the fire/voidzone/ZOMGIMTAKINGDAMAGEWHYARENTYOUHEALINGMEYOUNUUB?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?
Calieb- Aug 19th 2010 8:11PM
FULLY AGREE!!!! why didn't you heal me you stood in poison the whole time!! IF i hear well you can heal through it ONE MORE TIME!!!! yes i can heal through it but you can also take 3 steps in ANY direction and live!!!! NO HEALS FOR JU!!!
sherekhan88 Aug 20th 2010 2:26AM
I've had points where the tank refuses to move the mob out of the fire/poison/whatever, which leaves the melee in a lurch because they have nowhere to go that won't hurt them.
As I play two tanks on my two other alts, this isn't the fault of the dps as it is an incompetent and thoughtless tank.

I was in a random dungeon the other day with my friend who I am leveling with. We were in outland, specifically the Blood Furnace. There's a hallway that's full of orcs and their fel orcs or whatever they are right between the first and second bosses. Well, we were doing that and the tank pulled a group to him and a shadowcaster stayed behind while the melee mobs ran to us. one of our melee dps (a deathknight if you could believe that) ran past the melee enemies that were whacking on the tank and went straight to the caster mob, which was out of range of healing by a lot. He then proceeded to pull the rest of the room and died. I (being a hunter) lived, the shaman healer Ankhed, but everyone else died.
If this wasn't bad enough, the melee dps that ran off and got everyone killed spouted off in chat calling my healer friend all types of bad words, saying that he should've healed him. I said that dps shouldn't expect to be healed because if they're getting hit, they're doing their job wrong. He then called me all types of names and then demanded the healer to rez him. Healer said, "I'll rez you when you apologize" and the dps said, I'm sorry, asshole. we then promptly kicked him from the group and everyone proceeded to tea bag his corpse.
Note that there is no unavoidable raid damage in these mob fights, otherwise it would've been on the healer to keep us all alive regardless of how bad we are.

I'm gonna have to go with you on this one. Don't stand in the void zones or the fire (regardless of color). OMFG I CAN'T HEAL THROUGH STUPID!! /headdesk
Also, tanks who like to charge out of range before you've had a chance to catch up. I'm sorry I didn't run fast enough for you, but you effing charged oor. Sorry, I again, can't heal through stupid.
Snuzzle Aug 20th 2010 3:15PM
I sometimes encourage the DPS to stand in stuff when I'm bored on my overgeared healers, but I do agree that if the healer didn't specifically tell you it's okay, don't do it.
On my undergeared healers (and non-80s) I will heal you the first few times figuring it's lag/a mistake/didn't notice/etc. Make a habit of it, and it'll no longer be a net dps gain.... cause you'll be dead.
I had a tank in Mara who loved to charge ahead and out of range while I was drinking. He died three times in a row during the first ten minutes and started yelling at me for being fail. Arguing with me telling me I was at 70% mana and didn't need to drink (I was actually at 20% from rezzing/healing him back up). I just dropped group, don't need to take anyone's abuse if he can't be situationally aware of where his healer is and what she's doing.

tanks staying in bad is one of the things I hate seeing in the 5 man toc. especially if I am not on my icc heals and am on one of my lesser geared characters and EVEN MORE so when I have a group of 4 melee dps'ers. there are times where I want to /slap someone or /knifeinback a fellow group member, this would be one of those times.
Xsinthis Aug 19th 2010 7:25PM
I have an addon called Can't Heal You which alerts someone your trying to heal via whisper if their out of range or out of line of sight. My guild has banned its use in raid O.o
Zankoku Aug 19th 2010 7:28PM
Actually ran into that addon in LFD... a lil annoying if you're not used to it
iwubyou Aug 19th 2010 7:34PM
Why on earth would a guild ban something like that? It helps to keep you alive.
bennet Aug 19th 2010 7:40PM
Oooh, you're my hero. We have a mage relatively new to our raids who is *constantly* out of range, and I think my tanks would love an alternative to having me screeching like a banshee over Skype (I wouldn't be screeching if he would actually move into range, but he has a tendency to say those horrible three words, "I'm all right!" Never want to hear that from anyone who doesn't have self-heal capability).
Xsinthis Aug 19th 2010 8:01PM
@Iwubyou: they claim i'm lazy, and apparently it spams them if they have wow instant messenger :S
Vladeon Aug 20th 2010 8:33AM
Maybe he's a Draenei?
Seriously though, on my draenei mage, I can use Gift of the Naaru with my CDs and hit 5-8k heals every three seconds. It's nice when you're about to die, or the tank needs just a little bit extra heals. It's also fun in arenas :D

Divine Intervention is also a nice way to wipe, though only Paladins have access to this wonderful tool, and it's going away in Cataclysm. =(
