The OverAchiever: The 25 most entertaining achievements finale

Every so often, I get tired of the self-seriousness that infests some of (OK, most of) the other work I do here and get the urge to write something purely for fun. After our series on evil achievements and the relentless misery of School of Hard Knocks, I'd like to spend some time on achievements that are nothing but an absolute joy from beginning to end.
Here it is, folks; the last two achievements in our hit parade of World of Warcraft's 25 most entertaining achievements. This is the full series, if you're catching up:- OverAchiever: Pure Win
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #25-21
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #20-16
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #15-11
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #10-6
- The 25 most entertaining achievements, #5-3
- And today's post, the finale

World of Warcraft is steeped pretty firmly in the most basic and primal of fantasy tropes, and the epic quest for a magic weapon is something even a newcomer to the genre can recognize. For better or worse, most of the game's truly exemplary weapons -- the legendaries -- have been confined to a very small portion of players at the highest tier of the raid game. If you weren't in a progression-oriented guild at the time when these weapons made a real difference to a raid, you had no shot at Sulfuras, Thunderfury, Atiesh, the Warglaives of Azzinoth, or Thori'dal, just as you've got no shot at Val'anyr or Shadowmourne without a fairly competent raiding guild in Wrath. While this achieves the desired effect -- the weapon stays rare and a tantalizing goal for anyone who needs an extra shove in the direction of the game's truly difficult content -- the usual process of building a legendary or waiting for one to drop has a mixed effect at best on players.
The Battered Hilt quest line combines some of the best elements of legendary-hunting with a huge wallop of political intrigue and lore. Yes, there's a lot of RNG to hurdle at the very beginning, as all those of us who've run the Icecrown heroics a lot already know, but the evil bit is slightly mitigated by the hilt's BoE status. Once you're on the quest line, it's all gravy. You get:
- a good look at the tensions between the Sunreavers and the Silver Covenant
- a trip to the Wyrmrest Temple so the dragons can tell you to your face that they're not sure reforging Quel'dalar is a good idea, and they gave a book necessary to its identification to someone else, anyway
- an introduction to the Dalaran laundryman (the fact that neither faction of elves in Dalaran can be bothered to do its own laundry strikes me as hilariously realistic)
- a great cutscene in Icecrown that was an early introduction to Blood Queen Lana'thel
- some irritated advice from Uther the Lightbringer, who reminds you that repairing ancient swords with the blood of malevolent Old Gods is generally ill-advised
- after the sword's reforging, a trip to visit the ghost of the Quel'dalar's original bearer, and thence to a phased Sunwell Plateau, followed by the sword's purification in the reignited Sunwell
As an ilevel 251, Quel'dalar may not last you if you wind up doing any serious raiding in Icecrown Citadel, but it's a high-quality weapon nonetheless. Interestingly, Quel'dalar's "sister blade" -- Quel'serrar -- was another beautiful sword largely accessible without serious raiding (although it did require a trip to Onyxia and a bit of luck).
By the way, one of the more interesting bits about the quest series is how the dialogue is subtly altered for blood elves.

How could number one be anything else?
I'm cheating here slightly as I feel the achievement should rightfully encompass the subsequent Battle for the Undercity as well, but you really can't have one without the other ... for now. That'll change when Cataclysm hits and the battle goes bye-bye, as it won't then fit within the game's story progression. But who cares? You can argue that a huge dose of Cataclysm's story can be traced back to the events that occurred in front of Angrathar anyway; it's the common point from which the modern political landscape emerges, and with it a reordered Azeroth (Deathwing's own efforts aside).
Veteran of the Wrathgate is the achievement you're awarded for what's quite possibly the most expansive and ambitious quest line that Blizzard's ever done (and one that must have been a nightmare to plan and program). Having played both an Alliance and Horde toon through the content, I maintain that the story arc for both is fantastic, but I think the Alliance has the edge when it comes to the questing before Angrathar -- they have a much more extensive and personal history with Arthas, period, regardless of the protests you'll hear issued from the Forsaken and blood elf camps -- but the Horde has the edge afterwards in the Undercity battle. If you're a Horde player, you're never going to forget the end of the fight with a quietly devastated Thrall, who pulls himself out of his misery long enough to express condolences to Saurfang over the loss of his son.
The events at Angrathar ended, perhaps forever, the détente between the Alliance and the Horde. It sparked arguments among players on the extent of the Horde's responsibility, the wisdom of Thrall's willingness to trust people like Sylvanas, and what role King Wrynn's reaction to the presumed death of his oldest friend played in the rising political fortunes of Garrosh Hellscream. Let's not forget that it also landed Bolvar Fordragon in the Lich King's throne, to what ultimate effect we don't even know. The entire quest chain from start to finish was a lovely and practiced bit of storytelling, but I think the fallout from it has been even better.
Veteran of the Wrathgate could not be a better experience if you have even the slightest interest in Azeroth. I love the subtlety of the storyline preceding it and how different each faction's path is to the battle. I love the Alliance's grimness as it sets itself to the task of avenging a fallen kingdom and how slimy the Royal Apothecary Society is while it has you out doing the dirty work. I love that your character is literally above the actual battlefield as the fight takes place, and I love the epic cutscene that blew everyone's mind when it was first datamined. I especially love that you get one brief, shining moment of interfaction cooperation -- Fordragon and Saurfang's little moment in the heat of the battle -- before it all comes crashing down.
I give Blizzard a lot of crap whenever I don't think it's done something well, but fair's fair; in an MMORPG where you're trying to balance a mostly-static world with the individual desire of each player for an epic story, it's damn hard to pull off something of this magnitude, but that's exactly what it did. While I've shied away from the apellation of "best" to any achievement on this list because the term is a little vague, I firmly believe that, by any metric you could name, this is the best achievement in the game.
Working on achievements? The Overachiever is here to help! We cover everything from Glory of the Hero and Insane in the Membrane to Master of Alterac Valley and Lil' Game Hunter, and you can count on us to guide you through Azeroth's holidays and special events. I couldn't agree more with your choice for #1. Every time someone in my guild gets this achievment, no matter if it is the first time or they have done it on 9 other alts, it always sparks a bit of celebration.

"you really can't have one without the other"
Man, I wish that were true. Nothing like rolling up on Orgrimmar for an attack on Thrall, only to find that the MT and the mage who's supposed to port you out are phased because they didn't do Battle for Undercity.

"Thank you Druid for reforging this famous, super-awesome legendary weapon of greatness... It is yours to do whateve... oh, wait... you're a druid. Well hmm....... Go give this to those people in that tent over yonder who have equally famous, super-awesome legendary weapons for people just like you. It makes sense now stop asking questions about us having weapons like that just laying around being used by no-one..."
Druid says " QQ"

Great series. And the fact that someone on the Wow.com staff finished one. Nice job. Really enjoyed reading them all and couldn't agree more with No. 1. Epic!

Soooo...are you saying you didn't like it? Because you seemed a little ambiguous there.

The thing I remember most about the whole wrathgate quest chain was the extremely irritating "Flight of the Wintergarde Defender" which was a PITA at the best of times and miserable with high latency. This quest put me solidly into the hatred camp when it came to vehicle quests.
Everything wrong with vehicle quests went wrong with this one. I really hope they dump those fracking vehicle quests in Cataclysm
[/rant]
It was *much* easier when I did this as Horde, and I remember resenting that the Alliance part was much harder.
As for the assault on Undercity, I was kind of bored with it. Once I realized I could /dance through it and that Varian and Jaina (or Thrall/Sylvanis) were doing the heavy lifting, it lost the thrill I had until that moment of realization. For the later alt, I just spammed consecration.
TL:DR, I would have liked it a lot more without Wintergarde Defender

I've only seen two hilts drop in all my dungeon-grinding runs--on the same run, too. Both of them went to the resident hunter-stranger who was boasting a MUCH better staff on his back--second best-in-slot, if my memory's any good. When inquired as to why he rolled need on the hilt, he declared it was for his 'gold spec'. Mm. Well.
How'd I get mine? I was lucky, sort-of.
I knew and was close friends with a very charitable and thoughtful couple in my guild who were more than happy to pull strings with their unnamed sources, pool together a huge wad of gold, and bought me a Hilt as a graduation present. Frankly, I was touched: it was possibly the only thing in the game I'd had on my invisible wish-list, and I had never told anyone I'd been going out of my way to solo heroic PoS trash repeatedly, daily, for a chance at the Hilt. How they knew I was becoming worried about my dual-specialization's threat [as ICC went further along] eludes me completely.
I did the chain, but, problem, my tank of choice at that point in time was a Bearal druid. The end of the quest-line was very dissatisfying, and on top of it all the hammer wasn't even nice--it was an orange tentacle monstrosity with thorns. For a brief moment I actually had an angry.
However, shortly after I did the chain, our guild-leader had a birthday. Over the months the collective guild had been saving up for something special for our GL. We brought him out to northern Dragonblight where we told him we'd all found a rare spawn for the 'kill every rare spawn' achievement. Course, there are no rare spawns where we took him--the big broken-off titan road that leads into Crystalsong. When all five or so of us were assembled--Hilt Couple and Leader Couple plus Raz--Our GL's significant other handed him a wrapped box, which he opened. Inside was, for lack of better terminology and poor memory, a very freaking expensive motorcycle-mount. At first he couldn't accept it: saying that 'oh it was too much of a gift, it was too nice', so on so forth. . . the humble goofberry.
We all played around, with GL running around in the bike with his S-O in the side-seat, Hilt-Couple laughing and smiling. Me standing there having completed the Hilt-chain just a bit earlier, throwing out the occasional firework, watching the others take turns in the bike-seat. And y'know? I figured out something.
The Hilt was a great gift, from really two good friends [who sure as heck deserve better than my company]. And, well, I just find the Hilt doesn't bother me anymore.
Bleh, bad story. :p

No arguments about these 2. I've done Wrathgate 4 times on my Alliance toons, and just did it for the first time this week on a Horde toon. Definately feel like you need a long shower after dealing with it from the Horde side.
I agree that the Alliance side is better leading up to Wrathgate. However, I found that the Allainace battle to be easier to follow, and I liked the Alliance battle better. It's not that there's not plenty of epicness to be found horde-side, but the battle flows better on Alliance side then it does for the Horde. So, Alliance wins for Wrathgate and the battle, IMHO.
However, I agree, the Horde side packs far more of an emotional impact with the aftermath portion. Thrall and Saurfang sitting side-by-side, both devastated by events is pretty damn good.

This is a nice selection of achievements, in fact I got curious about what percentage of people actually gain each of these, and the calculations are available on my blog:

Pretty fun list, although it's quite disappointing that months were wasted on drawing out such a simplistic topic.

As a confirmed casual, I saved and saved my 10K and bought the hilt on the AH and had a brilliant time doing the quests. On my first alt run in IC the hilt dropped, pressed need, won, sold on AH. Randomshmandom I say.

I always feel like I missed out on the Wrathgate experience. I first did it as Horde and I have to say that the quest chain didn't really particularly stand out to me among all the other "we must fight the Scourge here" quests. (When I redid it as Alliance later, it seemed to be a lot more focused.) Then I got to the Wrathgate itself, and due to a problem with my game's language settings, I just saw the phase change but no video, and panicked a little when nobody in my party responded to my questions about what was going on - because they were watching the cinematic! Seeing the Wrathgate change from bustling to burnt and destroyed with no explanation was just confusing and frustrating. To this day I can't get the cut scene to play unless I log out and change my game's language settings first. Seeing it on Youtube just isn't quite the same. :/
I fully agree about the Quel'dalar quest chain though. I've never won a battered hilt myself even though I've seen it drop multiple times, but there's always someone willing to hawk theirs on the AH for a couple thousand gold, and anyone can earn the money to buy it there.
Jennifer Aug 20th 2010 8:46AM
Don't forget the music for the Wrathgate. It gives me the shivers every time I listen to the soundtrack. Absolutely breathtaking.
Jaq Aug 20th 2010 10:30AM
Can't argue with either of these, though I only know number two through reputation-I find it funny that I'm a fairly casual player in a fairly casual guild who is working on Shadowmourne and yet have NEVER seen a hilt drop, despite farming FOS with a friend for the Trinket That Never Drops for weeks. I'd buy one just to see the chain but on my server they still go for nearly 10K gold for some reason. Maybe in Cata the price will drop and I can see it, since the gods of RNG hate me.

I was surprised that "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been" didn't make the cut. We didn't even get a grouping for "The Holiday Achievements" like he did for rare mounts and the class specific mounts. Also, while I personally dislike PvP I was surprised that none of the PvP achievements made the list either. While I agree with the majority of this list there were still several I thought just didn't belong. That's natural when you're talking about a list of the most entertaining achievements because each person finds different aspects of this game entertaining. One of the great things about this game is that there ARE so many different facets that appeal to different people. I really thought, however, that the honors would be more evenly divided amongst the different TYPES of achievements than they are. One of the previous posters ran some stats on how many people actually got each achievement on this list and "Observed" I think it was had something like less than 5% and not being a hardcore raider I didn't even know about "The Sword in the Skull" until I read it here. Nice article but not as egalitarian as I had hoped. :)

I agree whole-heartedly. Veteran of the Wrathgate is the MOST epic achievement in World of Warcraft. I, too, have attained it on both factions and I do agree that they are both amazing quest lines. However, I really did like the Alliance quest line better as you get to see what you'll finally be up against come Naxxramas.

I'm posting this so everyone realizes there are two sides of the coin. RNG is not the best system, I wish it had some sort of internal diminished returns for each individual, or a sliding scale like the new lunar/solar (win/lose ratio) mechanic with mookins coming out.
My wife never wins anything, we wrote down and tracked our rolls in a spread sheet for 250 rolls that were for actual gear we would equip in ICC, we did not just spam '/roll' x250 (this does include saronites and second spec gear; or fourth spec, I'm a Durid). After about 6 months we discovered my average roll was 76 and hers was 34.
Maybe it is a coincidence but she has never seen a hilt in her 5 man runs and after I had won a 4th hilt doing daily randoms (I've seen 8 total) I gave it to her. She almost refused it, detesting my luck.
Ever wondered what your average roll is across your gaming career, I'm sure there would be shockingly low and high averages if Blizzard could shed some light? Let's not forget I have 12 mounts in this game and 8 had to be rolled on versus 5,10, or 25 others. My wife never congratulates me when I win something after our (non-scientific) test was so revealing. She has 76 mounts, no rares, alot of rep farming all over the world, i.e. Ambassador and such.

I don't know if you've done it already but you should do a post for the X best quest chains in the game (include ormorok tornheart chain and the seal of ascension?)
And/or a post for the X best/coolest quest rewards in game (like the seal of ascension and the firefighter). Just a suggestion!
