I don't play the AH, but I have never been affected by AH pvp. You just need to understand the ups and downs of your local AH to not get burned. I buy all my raiding herbs in the weekend, when the prices are much lower. (What I do is log on in the morning and check the AH, and then log off). Gems I never have to buy thanks to an overflowing supply of emblems and WG shards. If you have an alchemist, you can even transmute them yourselves. Other small things like belt buckles and leg armor is the same. Buy a couple off the AH when it's cheap in the weekend. You won't need more than 2 per raid/pvp tier anyway (per active character).

Of course, this assumes you have good and active AH on your server.
