Cataclysm Beta: Archaeology achievements

It occurred to us here at WoW.com that we hadn't mentioned these lovely new achievements implemented for the archaeology profession. In addition to the standard "you have at least this many points" achievements, there are also three achievements with a bit more flavor to them.
- I Had It in My Hand, which grants the player the illustrious title of Assistant Professor, is rewarded for finding a rare artifact.
- Seven Scepters is granted for recovering, well, seven scepters. As you can see above, two are named, the rest are not -- so your guess is as good as mine.
- The Lost Thanes is one you earn by discovering the names of the Five Lost Dwarven Thanes, apparently by discovering items they once possessed.

The anthropology geek in me severely approves of this profession.

There's getting to be quite a lot of professions out there, now. It looks like managing all the secondary professions in addition to your two primaries could start to be a lot of work! Before too long, we may need a number restriction on secondaries... . That, or a system where we don't have to travel out of our way to visit trainers to learn abilities.
Our characters are intuitive, surely we can learn how to make a bandage from different cloths on our own, yeah? The heroes in the Warcraft RTS games didn't need to visit trainers, why should we? :p I mean, we're supposed to be masters of our various crafts, ya think we could figure some things out ourselves as we did more of it...

Feel free to limit your number of secondary professions. This feature exists in the game already and requires no additional coding on Blizzard's end to implement.

This profession will be great! Will have a lot of lore for us lorejunkies (and since there are draenei artifacts, more draenei lore!).

Ya know razion, maybe if I try I can learn to fish up lava fish without any help at all! Or perhaps I can just maybe make a dig site and get lots of ancient stuff without breaking it. Or maybe even learn to make Fish Feasts!
razion Aug 21st 2010 1:54PM
Well, yeah. You are a master at your craft, right? You've done a LOT of fishing, you've probably learned a lot about it! That's the theory, anyway. You would still theoretically still have to go to train beginner, journeyman, artisan, expert, and so on... but normal trade-skill recipes you would just figure out. How did anyone ever invent anything? By being good at what they do and by building on the knowledge they already had. Sure, we can still get unique tips from recipes and so forth (some ideas are just too unique to make up yourself), but normal instruction could very-well be self-taught.
While your criticism is understandable, I do think my concept at its base has a bit of merit and reason to it.

I all seriousness though I remember seeing somescreen shot from blizzcon once. It looked like you had a journal and it told you where to go for certain items. Could be very much like a treasure hunt. Okay now fly south until you see the first iceberg. Inside it there will be the item of no worries. What? You died of fatigue? You mean you thought the throne in Stormwind? Maybe I should have been more specific...

I was trying to figure out what sankes were. My brain was fooled twice!!
threetoehoek Aug 21st 2010 1:33PM
They have a "why'd it have to be snakes?" heroic first boss in Gundrak.

Is there an easier achievement to get the title "Assistant to the Professor"?
Moosey Aug 21st 2010 1:44PM
No Associate Professor? Ah well, I can live with Assistant. Time to get me a pet crab! ^^

"Yes every one. Stop whining."
I hope that makes it to live. :D

There needs to be an anti-achievement, like finding an item that is not correct while on a timed Archeology run. Call it "Got Lost in his Own Museum."
Amaxe Aug 21st 2010 2:34PM
Indiana Jones jokes aside, I am interested in trying this out once it goes live. It may not have any pvp/pve practicality but being able to uncover the lore of the game sounds great.
I just hope the execution isn't botched.

oO a professor title ..... something that will go will with my main professions of engineering and alchemy HUZZAH!
WhiteWylf Aug 21st 2010 3:34PM
Now if only a rare cross was one of the rares and triggered a question chain...

I wish that they would finally do something with the achievement points that we are earning for getting these achievements. I have loads of them and i feel like they serve no purpose.
Clydtsdk-Rivendare Aug 21st 2010 4:06PM
I just like the "Yes every one. Stop whining" TBH.
