Cataclysm Beta: Balance druid changes

Spell changes
- Faerie Fire range increased to 35 yards, up from 30 yards
- Insect Swarm range increased to 40 yards, up from 35 yards
- Starfire range increased to 40 yards, up from 35 yards
- Entangling Roots range increased to 35 yards, up from 30 yards
- Moonfire range increased to 40 yards, up from 35 yards
- Wrath range increased to 40 yards, up from 35 yards
- Cyclone cast time increased to 2 seconds, up from 1.5 seconds
- Thorns now lasts 20 seconds, down from 10 minutes; damage increased by 1,400%
- Wild Mushroom is now limited to 3 mushrooms, down from 5
The range increases are all standard for every class and is merely the same effect as the old Nature's Reach talent. Although it can be easy to get excited over the increase in Cyclone's cast time, but before you go running to the forums, know that this is a game-wide change to all similar CC effects such as Polymorph and Fear. The Thorn change is certainly interesting, but it's a little bit "ehhh" at the moment. Not mentioned in the patch notes is that Thorns also has a 45-second cooldown, which is understandable given the intent of this change, but the damage is only around 500 after spellpower and it costs around 2,500 mana -- by comparison, Starfire costs 1,500 mana. It should also be noted that Starsurge's range was not increased to that of our other spells, which makes it very wonky to use in many situations; whether or not this is a bug has yet to be verified.
Talent/miscellaneous changes
- Moonkin Form now increases Nature and Arcane damage by 10%.
- Starlight Wrath now reduces the cast time of Wrath and Starfire by 0.15/0.25/0.5 seconds.
- Heart of the Wild and Furor have switched places.
- Moonfury, the balance specialization bonus, now also increases the critical strike damage bonus of spells by 200%.

oh my god that thorns change looks AWESOME for leveling, just refresh every 20 seconds like we used to do with pally seals
devilsei Aug 21st 2010 8:33PM
actually, it'll be every 45 seconds, which means you'll be without thorns for 25 seconds!
Congratulations druids, your thorn spell has managed to make old-school paladin seals look awesome!
themightysven Aug 21st 2010 8:41PM
mmm, cause Bears never use thorns for that extra bit of threat. I guess they can just shift into caster form once every 45 seconds, that seems like a great idea
devilsei Aug 21st 2010 8:53PM
Sven, sorry, but are you trying to say that bears aren't intimidating and threatening enough on their own? What are you, a bear cub?
Seriously though, yeah, it does suck, it was a nice source of passive threat, similar to the old-school holy shield charges of protection paladins. It could work as a way of gaining threat faster though at the beginning of a fight, pop it then charge in immediately, since my understanding is bears follow the same flaw as warrior tanks in that they NEED a ramp-up time, this would help ease that.
Wish they'd put some interactivity in though, like let us have the original thorn skill, but if we wanted, ask a mage to light us up, and charge in as a bear covered in fiery thorns... that would be badass.

well, if they allow thorns to be cast in bear form, without breaking shapeshift, i won't be opposed to the change. it'd be a nifty little AE threat cooldown, kind of like the shield block/damage shield combo that a warrior can use. actually, if it can be cast as a bear without shifting back to caster and no-armor, i'll be 100% in favor of the change.
without in-form use for bears, it'll be a pretty crappy change for feral tanks... granted, thorns wasn't much threat, but it helped against healer aggro early game in particular.

They've been trying to get rid of passive threat across the board. Warriors lost damage shield and paladins have a consecrate cd of 45 seconds.

@themightysven
Your guild only runs with 1 druid, eh? Well I guess it would be too much of a dps loss for a balance druid to cast it on the bear. And if a resto druid used one of his GCDs on the spell, half the raid and one of the tanks would surely die due to lack of healing.
thebitterfig Aug 22nd 2010 10:38AM
@Kazeko
ah. hadn't noticed the damage shield change. i figure i'll probably play my warrior no matter what they throw at him and consequently follow warrior changes less closely than other classes... fingers crossed they add back some sort of Damage Shield-like boost to "Heavy Repercussions" even at the cost of the double shield slam damage during shield block that the talent currently grants. maybe 50% SS damage but a small reflect on attack would be the idea mix.
in the meanwhile, anyone want to take bets on how long Retribution Aura will stick around?

What? You all were thinking it.

Nothing i can do....

Could the Thorns change not be seen as a way to Ramp-up starting agro of Bears?
Hotash Aug 21st 2010 9:20PM
Whats to stop say a resto druid popping thorns on any tanks for extra threat, if it scales with SP a resto/balance druids thorns in theory will generate more threat for a tank then a feral druid popping it on himself as he pulls
flint Aug 21st 2010 9:33PM
They can make the Thorns threat get directed to the druid who cast it, rather than the target it's on. Which would suck, in my opinion.
Also, can we get Thorns castable in Bear Form if we're gonna have to cast it every 45 seconds? That'd be silly to have to keep switching out of Bear Form to keep Thorns up as often as possible.
szimm Aug 22nd 2010 5:11AM
I don't see any reason for them to make that change - currently, thorns' threat refers back to the wearer, not the caster... Why would they even consider changing this?
razion Aug 21st 2010 10:08PM
Does thorns still go up to 60 minutes with the glyph with this change? ;
Gendou Aug 21st 2010 10:34PM
Most, if not all glyphs currently on live are being removed or changed.
So I wouldn't count on it.
Lissanna Aug 22nd 2010 12:40AM
I tested it, and the glyph doesn't have an effect. I expect that glyph to be removed completely once they revamp glyphs.
Zaros Aug 22nd 2010 2:07AM
If it did 1400% damage would have me playing my moonkin for 2 weeks non stop Battlegrounds.
On a side note though is this dispellable? The current incarnation of thorns is, but if this change goes live then having it spellstolen will not only give them a huge advantage but screw us over because of the cooldown.
Hmmm..... I just got an Idea. Maybe when thorns is up all of your buffs become undispellable for the duration. Because the enemy gets hit by a thorn :P
Otherwise I can expect overlooking this the same way I removed Nature's Grasp from my bars.
Zaros Aug 22nd 2010 2:12AM
I need to start proof-reading my posts. Who agrees?
Let me fix this:
If the kept the current version of the Glyph then it would.........
