The Light and How to Swing It: Holy paladin gear diversity

I think that holy paladins have been pretty blessed this expansion, pun definitely intended. Our holy tree has been very solid throughout Wrath, and we've even got a few flex talents that we can use to pick up Improved Lay on Hands or even Blessed Hands. Our massive healing throughput has also made us one of the healers of choice for Anub'arak and the Lich King on heroic mode and even for bugging out Yogg-Saron's heroic mode, as well. Our progression throughout Northrend has settled holy paladins into a pretty comfy healing niche. Even with all of the development our class has seen in the past few months, a few questions still remain.
For example, why are we still using the item level 200 Libram of Renewal instead of one of the shiny new librams from the Emblem of Frost vendor? The reason is that our old libram is too strong, and our new librams are poorly designed. Specifically, the Libram of Blinding Light just doesn't mesh well with our playstyle. It forces us to use Holy Shock on a regular basis to keep it active and only provides extra spellpower. Of all the stats possible, spellpower is probably the one that holy paladins need the least of. What can Blizzard do to get things right the next time around?
Librams are now stat-sticks
We've learned that our pseudo-ranged-slot items, librams, will no longer provide class-specific benefits in Cataclysm, as they have in the past. Instead, they'll just be stat-sticks, like ranged weapons are for warriors or melee weapons on a hunter. This should help reduce our desire to stick with a weaker libram, as it's going to be incredibly simple for Blizzard to simply make a better version of that libram, which we'll instantly desire. It will also help Blizzard balance stats with caps, as paladins and death knights were previously unable to do any min-maxing with their relics, while warriors could.
Moving to a stat-specific scaling system makes more sense in the long run. It may have been nice to have some flavor in our librams, but for the most part, they were a failure. Holy paladins used one libram for the entirety of Wrath, unless we were in the arena; retribution paladins simply saw a minor strength boost with each new tier. When every class' stats are similarly distributed, balancing those classes is much easier and can help ensure that scaling is set up properly for the future.
Illumination isn't dead yet
I was going over a few World of Logs parses from some recent raids, and I noticed something interesting. On several fights, I'm regenerating more mana from Illumination than from any other source, even Replenishment. As my group gets more and more disciplined and takes less and less damage, I end up not having to use Divine Plea as often. Even on fights when I'm using Divine Plea as often as possible, Illumination still makes up a significant portion of my mana regeneration.
There used to be a time when critical strike rating was the ultimate holy paladin mana regeneration stat and Soul of the Dead was absolutely tops. Times have changed, and critical strike is now below both haste and mana per 5 seconds in terms of value for us. That doesn't mean that we're not critting at all, and we can't avoid having some crit on our gear. This is especially true for the top tier of raiders, as there is nearly no mail or plate gear itemized with haste and MP5 at the ilvl 277 level. We're stuck using haste/crit mixes on any gear we want to be ilvl 277, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Crit is a mix between a throughput stat and a regeneration stat. It's not the best at either; it's certainly not terrible, either. I've actually been enjoying picking up more critical strike rating, and I've noticed my Glyph of Holy Light splashes onto the melee have increased significantly as I trade MP5 for crit on top ilvl gear.
We need more than one dress
While there's only one fight in the game currently that requires holy paladins to use their full throughput (Valithria), Cataclysm will destroy that paradigm. We may keep a set of gear featuring critical strike rating and spirit for lengthy encounters and a set of haste and mastery gear to handle situations when throughput is of the utmost importance. Our massive throughput at the moment basically precludes us from caring about spellpower or critical strike rating, but our single-target HPS has been significantly reduced in Cataclysm.
Area-of-effect heals also encourage us to diversify our toolbox. As a general rule, AoE spells are the ones that benefit the most from throughput stats, as they're typically designed to only handle weaker incoming damage. Light of Dawn and Holy Radiance (the new name for Healing Hands) will both see massive benefits from additional throughput, so keeping a set of gear that focuses on throughput will help us through the more AoE-focused fights to come.
I look forward to being able to choose the right gear to help me augment the weakest part of my healing, whether that be throughput, mana regeneration or even stacking a particular stat like mastery for certain fights. We've been missing out on much of the fun of choosing gear, as intellect trinkets and gems are basically mandatory, we've been using the same libram since Naxxramas, and haste is really the only throughput stat we care about. Cataclysm will open up a level of gear diversity for holy paladins that's unheard of right now, and that's got me excited to start planning how my paladin will be geared when we go head to head with Deathwing.

"there is nearly no mail or plate gear itemized with haste and MP5 at the ilvl 277 level. We're stuck using haste/crit mixes on any gear we want to be ilvl 277"
I'm specifically commenting on the phrase, 'any gear we want to be ilvl 277'. Why does it matter what ilevel it is? Why not look at the gear itself? A good number of pieces of 10 man heroic gear are perfectly itemised for HL holy pallies in providing haste and MP5 and preferable to 277 pieces: Lockjaw is the obvious example, only beaten by LK 25H weapons, but there are also the legs from Marrowgar, the belt from BQL, the cape from BC, a ring from Festergut... There are RS 10 heroic drops that are similarly BiS over 25H drops. Item level only matters if you're worried about your gearscore and how other people that don't know your class will rate your character, neither of which are any reason to take or reject a piece of gear.

And the point I was trying (and failing) to make was: if you're taking less optimal gear just because of its ilevel and rejecting better items because their ilevel is too low, I really believe that 'you're doing it wrong'. There's no reason to be 'stuck using haste/crit mixes on any gear we want to be ilvl 277' unless you regard 'ilvl 277' to be a superior stat to MP5...

I think that was the author's point, mentioning that we had better gear in lower tiers (example the ilvl 200 libram vs the 264 one being the first one clearly superior ) than in ilvl 277 gear, where the latest tier from the latest released raid is supposed to be the best of the best for your class (because in theory is the strongest gear with way more budget for stats) and not having to keep the same ol' libram from almost two years ago simply because nothing better has come up yet, regardless of ilvl or having to roll on mail that is usually better itemized for us, he never said that you should wear the ilvl gear 277 for gearscore, but that it should be better than 200 stuff.
mor8idhomogenosuicide Aug 23rd 2010 6:05AM
the point is despite it being itemised sub-optimally, it's often going to be better to take it purely because of the ilvl (higher ilvl = more stats). Obviously you get extra int (unless gem slots are weird) on a higher ilvl piece, and a 277 crit/haste piece is arguably better than a haste/mp5 264 piece. When I get (optimism!) LK down on 25 at last I know I'll be upgrading to 277 crit/haste for the extra int.
Obviously I haven't done any theorycraft for it but I imagine the extra int + the regen from crit would rival the regen from mp5 on a lower ilvl piece, + we get the extra throughput.
I believe the point he was trying to make was that it would be a lot better if we had more haste/mp5 277 gear, then we could make a decision instead of being forced into it via ilvl difference.
Tl;DR: 277 haste/mp5 >>>> 277 crit/haste > 264 haste/mp5 (I imagine some people's opinion will differ but I'd still prefer haste/mp5)
So why is there not much of the best stat combination for us? And why is *none* of it plate gear?
toddless Aug 23rd 2010 9:31AM
@ mor8idhomogenosuicide
I share your opinion. I don't think I've ran across an item yet that had a higher ilvl, yet didn't provide some sort of boost to a "desirable" stat (in order of my priority: intellect, crit/haste, spellpower, mp5). Mp5 is last imo since after obtaining all 264 gear, it would only hinder my ability to increase my thoroughput (because in theory, I would be replacing a more important stat).

It's not about gearscore, it's about raw stats. Other healers get more spell power and more mana regeneration stats than we do, simply because there's 277 gear available for them. Imagine if all plate healing gear was a tier below everyone else. We'd be using 200s in Ulduar, 219s in ToC, etc. It's not fair that holy paladins get to put up with last tier's gear while everyone else gets to collect the best gear in the game. As Ghostcrawler said... WoW is a game about upgrading your stuff.

I'm pretty excited as well! I can't wait to try our new tool box! I like the idea of being able to fill any raid healing spot.

Question: are all the newly transformed holy paladin Librams spirit/crit, or do a few of them have different stat combinations, ie haste/spirit or haste/crit?
toddless Aug 23rd 2010 9:27AM
You will likely not be able to find an item that is "properly itemized for a pally" without spirit as a stat. Instead of spellpower it's just spirit, unless of course it's a weapon.
thebitterfig Aug 23rd 2010 11:11AM
toddless, i think you might mean intellect rather than spirit... int is the converted spellpower, and spirit is the converted mp5. all holy paladin items will start with int (ie spellpower) and stamina, and for any left-over WotLK gear, will have two of the following stats: haste, crit, and spirit (nee mp5).
maybe i should have been more clear that i wasn't asking how the new itemisation scheme works, i feel i understand well how the stats are changing, etc. allow me to rephrase.
"I've seen screenshots of the ilvl 200 libram and the ilvl 264 libram after the cataclysm relic normalisation, and both of them had spirit and crit as their discretionary stats, in addition the standard caster stats of int and stamina that i presume everyone understands are on all caster gear. just like the two of them and spellpower are on live, or that all plate dps and tank gear has strength and stamina plus extra stats, and all physical dps mail has int/stam/agi/ap plus two stats, etc, etc.
has anyone seen the 226 and 245 librams to confirm that they are also spirit/crit, or are they different. also, what's up with the pvp relics? does anyone know the stats on those?"

About iLvl200 Libram: I think Blizzard is the only one to blame about us still using that Libram. How hard is it to create a libram like this:
''Your Holy Light casts have a chance to increase your Intellect by 400 for 15 seconds''.
Blizzard is plain lazy when it comes to Libram creation tbh.
And speaking of Librams, why is the only iLvl264 Libram option is the one which you can buy with Frost Emblems?? For instance, why doesnt Saurfang or BQ have a Libram drop that people will actually go for?
