The Daily Quest: Kicking it

Here at WoW.com, we're on a Daily Quest (which we try to do every day, honest) to bring you interesting, informative and entertaining WoW-related links from around the blogosphere.
The random dungeon finder has certainly made it much easier for people to find groups for various dungeons, even more so if you happen to be a tank or a healer -- but even DPS players don't have to wait too terribly long to get a dungeon out of the way. The best part, for me, is the surprise element of the random dungeon feature. You never know what you're going to run or who you're going to be running it with. Sometimes you end up with good people, and sometimes you end up with bad -- which is where the vote-kicking feature comes in. Let's take a look around the blogosphere and see what others have to say about grouping:
- You Yank It You Tank It has some words of advice for groups on how to treat a tank.
- Big Bear Butt talks about the behavior of players in WoW and the vote-kick system.
- Thoughts From the Shadows discusses 5-man etiquette.
- Lastly, Pink Pigtail Inn has an interesting look into the power of a GM and why treating one poorly isn't recommended.

Huzzah for more people making the good word even better. Any mass-spread logic like this is greatly appreciated. I thank all those who actually act like a decent human being.
And for those who *don't* have any sense of morals, well, karma typically dictates things from here on in. Have fun. *mischeavious cackle*

I didn't really think that "don't treat the GM poorly" was the moral of Larisa's post. It's certainly a good message, but I rather thought Larisa was saying "Look at the GM treat the player poorly."
It's worth noting that the whole decision was later reversed, and she's got a follow-up post about it here: http://www.pinkpigtailinn.com/2010/08/post-in-which-gm-huw-restores-larisas.html

I don't really think the GM was out of bounds... The player was being a total cock up, and actually told the GM to "be silent" at one point... acting like the loss of macros (Really? Macros? I've lost my "valuable" macros countless times... I just go and make them again.) was a personal affront to their well being, and that their issue should be put ahead of everything else. Hey, guess what? Macros are saved both client and server side... if they were so damn important to him, he could just copy the file off somewhere and never have to worry about it... Hell, it's what I did once I got a nice collection of macros going.
And if part of the guys name was slang for a male body part, then yeah... if someone noticed and brought it to the GMs attention, it's their job to change it. The only reason it hadn't gotten noticed in the 5.5 years was because no one else reported it... It's not like GMs are patrolling the chat channels, looking for offensive names.
In the end, a childish prick got far enough up the system to find someone who didn't want to be bothered by them anymore... so they offered a canned response, and reverted the name change... Seems like a cop out response to me.

I'm speechless at how appalling that paladin acted. I know it's someone I'll never meet, but the worst part of reading that story is the sinking sensation that the paladin learned nothing from facing real consequences for his actions and will not change how he acts. His brash tone melted into infantile wails hilariously quickly, though.

Ugh, I knew people in real life who were like that to server's in restaurants, employees, etc. Needless to say I didn't know them for very long, some people take their money very seriously and if they pay for something, they expect paved gold roads in return, it's so strange to me.
I remember WAYYY back in Vanilla (during a time when Rogues lost their combo points when their attacked missed >.> ) I had a real life friend who got into WoW (I had been playing for a bit already) He loved the game and advanced very quickly, so I invited him to an awesome helpful guild I was in.
Not two days was he in there he was g/kicked and I left the guild (and server) to avoid him and started anew on Dragonblight (then later left normal servers altogether). He pestered the guild leader CONSTANTLY to help him and give him things and accosted him if he didn't, to the point where the leader contacted me and said he had to kick him and ignore him.
These things are beyond embarrassing to those of us who treat human beings as human beings, and I think that that player was put in his place 10 fold.

The paladin in question replied in the comments to the follow-up post to inform the audience that, no, he has learned nothing from this and will continue to be as unspeakably rude and self-important, since he was right all along.

Agh fail comment system!! Continued below
As a tank (one that does his best to do every dungeon bar the ICC ones in less than 20 minutes), I don't even bother trying to deal with rude and idiotic players. I leave. I'd rather chill out for 30 minutes than deal with people with no sense of common courtesy.

Hey guys! Thanks so much for putting Thoughts from the Shadows up. I'm just starting but I hope to make it a really good blog and appreciate any feedback.
Zinn Aug 24th 2010 8:05PM
Hi, like your blog! I suggest you change the text color to something more eye friendly however, it's kinda difficult to read now (or maybe I'm getting old...) :)
Jon Aug 25th 2010 12:43AM
@Zinn. Thanks, my girlfriend actually just re-did the layout this afternoon, so hopefully it's better.

This is actually one of my favorite subjects, here are some posts I've written on it;

Might as well pimp my own ideas on this sort of thing:

Manda, you probably won't see this, but there is something wrong with the commenting system on your page (or I'm just unlucky). After you've done the Word Verification the "post" button is gone, so there is no way to post the comment. So if you've never gotten any comments before it might be because the comment system doesn't seem to work :/

Shows how clueless many posters here are.
Im the pally from the last story, i emailed the pics of the conversation to woweuconcerns where senior GM looked it over.
He started with a deep apology, regretting that blizzard still has these kind of utter morons acting as GMs ingame. He then continued to correct every single wrong doing the guy did and gave me some extended gametime to compensate the idiocy.
Plus the first GM is under investigation and might lose his job.
Vast majority of commenters seriously need a crashcourse in customer services or just common sense.
thpthpthp Aug 24th 2010 7:37AM
Tbh I think a temp ban like 1 hr to calm you down next time you chat with a GM would be justified, but changing your name was completely out of bounds and of personal revenge. Still, I hope the GM did not loose his job for such a small issue, and that both of you learned some sort of lesson from all this.
Enesty Aug 24th 2010 7:40AM
You, on the other hand, need a crashcourse in behaviour. Even if the customer service is payed to help you, it does not give you the right to treat him like a piece of trash. He is just trying to help your lazy, unqualified ass for not saving your macros.
what goes around, comes around my friend. YOU stepped well over the line, and i'm glad there was a GM, a human being, on the other side who made you pay for this.
I bet it scared the shit out of you, when he told you your name was gone.
michael.dunkerton Aug 24th 2010 8:21AM
GM's are there to be helpful and enforce the rules. Not to use their powers to try to change d-bags.
Yes, Erajorma acted out of turn. But the GM's response should have been to drop the conversation, or give a short ban, or whatever the established protocol is. And that's the point--GM's have a job with limits. Blizzard doesn't just decide certain people have the power to do whatever they want.
Let's say a cop pulls you over for speeding. You act like a total moron to said cop--a terrible idea. So what does he do? He gives you the full ticket, like he's supposed to. What if, to teach you a lesson in manners, he decided to kick out your taillight and ticket you for that? Would you still say, "Well, now he knows not to tick off a cop..."
This situation is even more extreme because Era hadn't actually broken any rules--he was just discourteous, which should result in not getting to speak to a GM until he stops. The conversation is actually a bit scary to me when the GM plays out a prewritten message about deleting his name, obviously ignoring everything Era is saying. It would've been funny ("I'm sorry, Dave, I can't do that...") if it wasn't true.
