Pinkhair nailed the vital essence of what Warsong Gulch should have been way back in September 2008. With custom models and a knack for comedy storytelling, Pinkhair's The Robber Baron of Warsong Gulch plays with some of the spaghetti western genre's favorite tropes.
Take a moment to kick back and relive this old movie, and see if you feel whether The Robber Baron feels dated at all. I don't think you'll feel any second of its age. That's because Pinkhair created something new and amazing from the game's graphics, wrapped around a familiar and fun story. It's these essential qualities that allows machinima to stand the test of time, and Pinkhair is a master of it. Interested in the wide world of machinima? We have new movies every weekday here on WoW Moviewatch! Have suggestions for machinima we ought to feature? Toss us an email at machinima@wow.com.
This thing is great. You could have stopped it after the first minute, and still had more enjoyment than some of the machinima that gets trotted out there.
Just more proof that having a storytelling vision works better than haphazardly slapping WoW-related words onto the current #1 song on the charts and having Blood elves dancing for 3 1/2 minutes.
Just a correction here for you, Mr. Grey: this was not of the "Spaghetti Western" genre at all. This was a common theme among the early silent films (tie them to the railroad tracks/foreclose on the mortgage/dashing hero comes to save the damsel in distress, et al), whereas the spaghetti westerns were more of the southwestern US/Mexican bandito themes and were filmed in Italy (hence calling them "spaghetti" westerns).
@Unhunted I was afraid that's what you were referring to. Shane's right in it being an Indiana Jones reference which was used in Dogma. Even though I appreciate the reference in Dogma, it didn't quite have the humorous impact as it did in the Last Crusade.
@Pink - if that's really you, amazing work. Caused me some cognitive dissonance watching it - I knew there was no train like that anywhere in the game, but couldn't quite believe you actually created it yourself from scratch for a machinima.
Bliz should hire you to make it for Cata, it could run from the goblin city in Azshara, through the Horde's expansion in Ashenvale, down through the Northern Barrens, terminating in Ratchet. Give noobs a new way to quickly collect low level flight points.
Very well done Pink. I wish that this could actually happen in game so we could take the flag and then hop on a train to make our escape while the defenders chase us on kodos. :)

This was a great video... It's really, really good.

That was awesome. Surely a winner of some contest?
It also made me wish there was a "Jail" in Warsong Gulch.

Thank you! It took first place in Oxhorn's Wegame Machinima Contest.

I now wish for actual trains in WoW

That aside, this was an awesome work! Top-notch machinima, excellent job all around and thoroughly enjoyable to watch! I wish we could have a lot more of these than the rather cliché belf (c)rap that seems to pervade the market these days.

Yeah, it's much more a classic melodrama than a spaghetti western. But whatever we call it, I think we can all agree it is AWESOME.

Looks like it was indeed directly from the game. Can't recall having ever seen it though...

I've never seen it before. Maybe someone has or it's new to Cata.
Unhunted Aug 23rd 2010 1:44PM
Love it!
Great Dogma reference, too!

It's been a very long time since I've seen Dogma so I must have missed the reference. Can you refresh my memory please.
Shane Aug 23rd 2010 2:18PM
The "Dogma" reference is itself a reference to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
Unhunted Aug 23rd 2010 3:53PM
The reference is when Jay and Silent Bob are on the train with Bartleby and Bethany. Silent Bob throws Barleby off the train and says, "No ticket."

Reminds of stories about the great railroad and oil tycoon, Kiddlevix Rockefeller.

I made the train.

Damn well made, kudos.
