Nerdstomper Blue win MLG Raleigh

It was a close win for Nerdstomper Blue, after its opponents, Evil Geniuses, won the first set of the finals three to one. Evil Geniuses entered the finals from the lower bracket, though, and needed two winning sets to claim the championship. Things seemed doubtful for Nerdstomper Blue after it lost the first two games of the second set, but it made an impressive comeback, winning three games in a row and taking the championship. In addition to the $9,000 prize for first place, Nerdstomper Blue will now be seeded favorably at the MLG Finals in Dallas later this year.
If you missed the livestream, you can still watch the rebroadcast from Sunday's games at MLG's site.
For those of you who are curious, Nerdstomper Blue used a shadowplay comp (priest-warlock-shaman) for their first set against Evil Geniuses, then switched to RLS (rogue-warlock-shaman) for the second. Evil Geniuses used RLS for both sets.
Congratulations to Realz, Glickz and Kollektiv of Nerdstomper Blue!

So, if I understand correctly, despite winning, Evil Geniuses lost. What do you mean by lower bracket and why does it severely hamper them (since they have to win twice)?

Arena is so out of my league too :P

It's similar to a round-robin format, I think with a loser's bracket. I think. I dunno.

There is two brackets. So if two people meat in the winners finals, the loser then has to go down to the losers bracket and play the winner of that bracket and then the winner of that match has to go back and play the winner from the winners bracket. If that makes sense.

Makes no sense to me either. So EG takes 5 matches to Nerd Blue's 4 and loses? I'm sure there's some reasoning behind it, but I'd at least want to see best of 3 finals sets or something. At best Nerd Blue tied EG 1 finals set a piece.

To put it in a clearer way. It is double elimination. When the teams met in the finals. EG had already lost a set of matches somewhere in the tourney to get knocked down to the losers bracket. Where NB had never lost a set. When EG won the first set of the match up it efectively put the two teams at even. NB beat EG to give them their second elimination.

The brackets to these sorts of tourneys don't look like a typical NFL, soccer or NCAA bracket and can be somewhat confusing.... but I'll try :p
It seems it was double elimination and there were 8 teams. 2 of the teams are going to be flawless and remain in the "winner's bracket" where they will compete against each other and be given their first loss.
In the meantime everyone who has lost once now goes into the losers bracket where they battle it out and get eliminated upon their second loss. (Evil Geniuses would've been in the losers bracket). The winners of the losers bracket would then play against the team that has one loss from the winner's bracket. Then the team that wins out of that matchup plays the (presumably undefeated team) that is holding the winner's bracket. This is where they would have to overcome a 2 win deficit because they have one loss already and the winner's bracket team hasn't had any.

Ok, that makes more sense. So in effect they did play best 2 of 3, with NB winning the first, EG winning the 2nd and NB winning the 3rd.

Yeah I used "Lower Bracket" instead of "Losers Bracket" to be respectful to EG (both work if you know the terminology). I thought the context of the sentence would make it make sense to general readers. Guess not, so thanks to the commenters for explaining.
Next tournament is in Washington DC! It's the last tournament before the finals. I'll be there in person to get some coverage =)

I'm confused.

Did anyone else see the match where it was Priest, Warlock, Mage. VS Shaman, Mage, Warlock, and the Priest went down on the one team and one of his team mates flipped out and left the match(the Warlock) and he was still on camera and he was saying how they need to replace their team mate right in front of him? Kind of messed up. The commentators were kind of awkword after that. HAHA

It's a standard type of bracket used in many tournaments both in games in sports. It's commonly known as a Double-elimination tournament. Basically there are 2 brackets that happen at the same time. There is a Winners (Upper, top, various termonolgy can be used for it) and the Losers (Lower, Bottom, so on) bracket. When a team wins a match in the Winners Bracket they can continue on in that bracket. If a team loses they are then placed in the Losers Bracket and continue on there. At the end of the tournament team that has "won" the Winners bracket (IE hass undefeated) goes against the team that "won" the Losers Bracket (IE has 1 loss). So, effectively the team that got to the finals via the Losers Bracket has to win twice, once to make the other team even with their losses, then again to give the other team their second loss. I might not be explaining it that well, so, wikipedia go!

Thanks for being the only person able to explain wtf was going in a coherent fashion. Now I am unconfused.

I was about to ask why the hell anyone would hold a WoW tournament in Raleigh, which has like 250 people, when I found out that there's more than one Raleigh around.
Grumblecakes Aug 30th 2010 3:02PM
They were in my hometown (which I was actually there visiting family while the tournament was going on), and I'm still confused as to why it was held there.
Svirfneblin Aug 30th 2010 2:35PM
Guys- "seated" != "seeded". Players are seated, cause they're sitting when they play. Teams are *seeded*.

Fixing! Thank you!

So, is RLS the new RMP?
