MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively
Sometimes you'd like to know that there are other MMOs out there, right? It's not all WoW, all the time! Our sister site Massively can provide you with everything you need to know about all of the other MMOs around: past, present and future.
Teen kills disabled girl, plays DDO to "forget" On Aug. 17, 18-year-old Tyler Savage led police to the body of a developmentally disabled teenage girl, whom Savage admitted to killing then raping. After hiding the body, Savage went to a neighbor's house and logged in to Dungeons & Dragons Online. He claimed that playing DDO helped him to forget his crime, a crime to which he has since pleaded "not guilty."

Final Fantasy XIV open beta date announced, new trailer released Final Fantasy XIV closed beta keys were a coveted item for a while, as fans sent in beta applications in the hopes of seeing the game's ups and downs firsthand. Square Enix promised to grant that wish for everyone very soon with open beta, announcing that it would begin in early September. It looks like things are ready a bit earlier than anticipated, as the latest news from FFXIV has an open beta start date of Aug. 31.

Guild Wars 2 necromancer revealed This is not your ancestor's necromancer. Much like the ranger, the necromancer in Guild Wars 2 is bigger, badder and deadlier than her Guild Wars counterpart. Head over to Massively for screenshots, videos and descriptions of the cool new necromancer abilities and combat resources.
Free for All: Three games to keep an eye on Free for All, Massively's regular column featuring and discussing free-to-play MMOs, continues to combat the belief that free-to-play games are just cartoony imports with low production values. This week Free for All lays out three upcoming games that could change how we look at F2P MMOs.

Final Fantasy XIV fatigue format fully put forward Ever since the beginning of the third beta phase, "fatigue" has been a hot topic among Final Fantasy XIV fans. In a move familiar to longtime Square Enix players, the system was put into place without a great deal of description, with players left to speculate as to how the system worked. But a very uncharacteristic move comes from director Nobuaki Komoto with an open statement on what the system is, how it works and what it's meant to do.

Acclaim shuts down all games and main site Things have been increasingly uncertain for Acclaim titles since Playdom acquired Acclaim back in May, and visitors to Acclaim's site yesterday were met with a bare-bones message: "We regret to inform you that all Acclaim games will no longer be in service effective August 26, 2010." Other than a few instructions on refunds for Acclaim coins and an invitation to check out Playdom's Facebook games, the site is blank.
|
Massively Speaking Episode 112 Massively Speaking is back with Justin Olivetti joining Shawn and Rubi for a short show this week. Discussion includes Cryptic's new Neverwinter, FFXIV's open beta announcement, SWTOR's advanced classes and the newest Warhammer 40K trailer.

Where's the Rift love? :)
pyroroko Aug 31st 2010 2:33PM
FFXIV has fatigue? Didn't WoW do something like that, and promptly rid themselves of it in the Vanilla Beta?
Rubitard Aug 31st 2010 2:37PM
Great, now we'll have to sit through Mazes and Monsters 2 starring Colin Hanks.
In all seriousness, that's some really horrible, ghoulish news about that poor girl.
Scooter Aug 31st 2010 3:16PM
Some people are just plain twisted. I hope the guy involved get's what's coming to him. There is just no excuse for his actions.
Hollow Leviathan Aug 31st 2010 4:44PM
There is an excuse for his actions if he had no idea what he was doing. Insanity is not just giggling and being deviant, some people see/hear things that are not there, cannot control what they do, and don't understand what they're doing.
Not saying he necessarily has that excuse, but the situation exists.
skreeran Aug 31st 2010 7:04PM
Indeed. He deserves to be locked up, if not killed.
Although, I'll admit, I'd rather be killed, THEN raped, than the other way around. Not that that makes his crime any less horrible, I'm just saying.
Natsumi Aug 31st 2010 10:31PM
@skreeran
Would it really be rape if it's already a corpse? Would you really care if you're already dead? This of course assumes you don't believe that stuff about the brain remaining active for 15 minutes (or whatever) after death.
I think the real issue is that he murdered this chick and it turned him on.
Catacomb Kid Sep 1st 2010 3:39AM
@Hollow, I have no desire to debate with you, just use you to vent my dislike of the whole insanity thing.
Societies make laws for citizens to follow. If someone cannot follow those laws, that person shouldn't be part of the society, right? So we make prisons and death penalties. Being insane is all the more indicative of the person being unfit for society! Not indicative of the person getting out of punishment. This is where Guilty/Innocent starts to blur. Is an insane person morally innocent in a philosophical sense? Probably--I'm an Honors senior double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies--and morally, probably. But is the insane person LEGALLY innocent? Hell no. He killed a handicapped person and then had sex with a corpse. Hardly fit for society. I believe he deserves the death penalty. (which, hell, is arguably more humane than an asylum!)
But anyway, no need to start a debate--I'm just venting.
Possum Sep 1st 2010 8:11AM
Catacomb Kid if a person has a mental illness they should be treated. Contrary to what you seem to believe people can be treated for mental illnesses, get better and with proper continued treatment be productive members of society. Saying you're just venting isn't an excuse for going on a rant about people with mental illnesses.
Tuhljin Sep 1st 2010 4:30PM
Possum, contrary to what you think, people are never "cured" of whatever degeneracy caused them to rape a corpse. And that's not just some opinion; it's supported by studies. Should such a person be treated? Sure. Should such a person mingle with the rest of society? No. Probably never. I believe in forgiveness and redemption, but not everything can be cured, or cured "enough," in a person's lifetime.

The FFXIV beta got postponed. It is no longer Aug. 31st, but now some later date.
Source straight from the horse's mouth (of course, this page will change if they magically fix the bugs quickly =P ): http://entry.ffxiv.com/na/index.html
Ametrine Aug 31st 2010 4:41PM
Dammit, now we're gonna get a rehash of the kneejerk reactionary bullshit like that started by those crazy mothers back in the 80's who though playing D&D made to take drugs and worship Satan...
Natsumi Aug 31st 2010 9:59PM
Actually, they thought that it made you murder people or commit suicide.

Ugh, tell me about it. Do you know how much I had to reassure my mom when I was younger that just because I played D&D with some guys after work, that no, we weren't going to end up in some sewers having killed ourselves or each other?
But nooooo. Even after I pulled out evidence that the stories she had listed were in fact caused by other sources, like INSANITY and FRAT PRANKS, she still didn't believe me.
/huffs
Good lord that was annoying.
Rajinnu Aug 31st 2010 9:24PM
That guy is a total sicko.
Catacomb Kid Sep 1st 2010 3:52AM
Regarding the video game thing..*remembers he's on a video game site*..Regarding the murder thing...why on earth do they decide to throw the DDO thing in there?? It has no bearing on anything! It's such a dick move by the reporters.
"Man kills 47 people with a gun he bought using a Capital One credit line then returns home to a home insured with Farm Family where he eats Kellog's Frosted Flakes made by General Mills. Then he watches a DVD purchased from Blockbuster about the making of Avatar. Suspected link to James Cameron's involvement in the case is being pursued, sources say."
Natsumi Sep 1st 2010 8:55AM
Haha. UP-VOTED FOR TRUTH!
Possum Sep 1st 2010 8:56AM
It's just an attention grabber for people who actually believe, or want to believe that video games cause this sort of thing. It's like sticking a half naked chick on the front, it's a cheap ploy to attract the masses.
Didaxical Sep 1st 2010 9:39AM
In this particular case, the inclusion of the video game was not reporter sensationalism. The deputy prosecuting attorney included it in a formal court document.
"...after killing Kimberly he went home and by 4:00 in the afternoon of August 17 he was at a neighbor's house playing the Dungeons and Dragons Online video game in an effort to 'forget.'"
