The OverAchiever: Pimp thy ride, part 2

I have yet to see one of these babies flying around my own server, so I've borrowed a picture from Wowhead. The Onyxian drake is a very rare drop off the updated version of Onyxia that went live with patch 3.2.2, and it puts me in mind of what Onyxia might have looked like if you'd caught her in Dragon High School.
Back when the fifth anniversary patch went live, the mount was ninja'd so frequently that we couldn't go a day without having a complaint about it land in our inbox. That resulted in a remarkably forthright Breakfast Topic -- Would you ninja the Onyxia mount? -- and it turns out that, yes, lots of players will steal a drop if it's cool, rare and they don't think they'll ever get a shot at it again.
That said, it's been a while since I last heard any complaints about this -- I can only assume because Onyxia is pugged less frequently these days compared to Icecrown Citadel and Halion -- and it does make you wonder whether the would-be ninjas would have the same opinion today. Today's must-have, cool drop is tomorrow's outdated content.

As much as I like the frostwyrms and their art is really neat, they reuse the same tired drake animations that have been in the game since day one, so it's hard to get as excited about them as the proto-drakes. There's a grisly story attached to the ICC frostwyrms, as this is the letter you'll receive upon completing the requisite achievement:
<name>,
As the Lich King's influence wanes, some of his more powerful minions have wrested free from his grasp.
This frost wyrm drake my men captured is a prime example. She has a will of her own and then some.
One of my men lost an arm breaking her in, but now she takes to riders fairly well -- provided they themselves are skilled and strong willed.
Please accept this magnificent beast as a gift from the Knights of the Ebon Blade. It was an honor to fight along your side in the greatest of batles.
With honor,
Darion Mograine
Not quite as pleasant as the letter we got from Brann Bronzebeard. I've always hoped that the unfortunate guy in question was someone among the Ebon Blade or Forsaken who could have an already-dead arm reattached without too much fuss. The alternative is somewhat freaksome, but the Ebon Blade isn't the sort of faction likely to dwell on the particulars.

From a distance, you can't tell the difference between this and the 10-man version, but up close you'll see it's much lighter-colored -- almost as if someone had decided to wash the dragon's bones before assembling the skeleton for reanimation. At least, that's the only plausible explanation I can offer, which makes me wonder which poor soul among the Scourge was that obsessive-compulsive.
Lore-wise, there's something slightly tone-deaf about riding around Azeroth on a giant dead dragon salvaged from the bowels of Icecrown, which is something that occurred to me on the beta while running around Tirisfal and the former Plaguelands. We just spent an entire expansion ridding the world of the undead threat, and now we're riding their pet necromantic horrors because ... uh ... they're cool. Talk to a few Forsaken NPCs while perched atop this living embodiment of their unnatural hell, and you'll think: Is there any form of transportation in the game more ironic and insulting than this? We're probably safe on that count until Blizzard programs a reputation vendor offering flying wood-choppers outside the port to Darnassus.

The heroic Lich King encounter is a thoroughly murderous fight from start to end, and I honestly don't know that it's going to be all that much easier in Cataclysm. However, Invincible's going the way of Mimiron's Head in the next expansion -- expect to see it as a rare drop rather than the 100 percent drop it is now, which should keep the poor horse about as infrequent a sight as it is now.
I adore Invincible's design. I'll grant that the floppy hooves animation while it's idling in midair or flying around are a little on the comical side, but if I recall correctly, the horse was put down by Arthas after its legs were broken, so that's not a real surprise. As with Mimiron's Head and the Ashes of Al'ar, be prepared to roll against everyone in the raid if you're ever around to see it drop.
Wrathful Gladiator's Frostwyrm
No player actually has this mount yet, as it'll be rewarded for reaching the Gladiator rank in 3v3 or 5v5 arena at the end of season eight. If you're on track for this, your 310 percent mount needs should be met, but obviously it's not the sort of thing you should bank on at this point.

Damn right this thing's a 310 percent mount; no one would put more than a year's worth of blood, sweat and tears into it if it weren't. It's actually for that reason that I've always felt the Red Proto-Drake (the reward for Glory of the Hero) should have been a 310 percent mount as well, because the meta requires so much work even today. But the purple version's an acceptable substitute.
Any player can get a violet proto-drake if they put the time and effort into the game's eight major holidays over the course of a year. It's not fast and it's often not pretty (e.g., School of Hard Knocks, Sinister Calling), but as one of our commenters here once observed, there are only two ways to get the really good stuff in WoW: fast and difficult, or slow and relatively easy.
OverAchiever's covered each of Azeroth's holidays, so if you ever find yourself hurting for information on a specific achievement or meta, here are the 2009/2010 guides:
- Lunar Festival
- Fool For Love
- Noblegarden
- Children's Week
- Midsummer Fire Festival
- Brewfest
- Hallow's End
- Winter Veil

You probably get your kicks out of responding to stuff like this. One day, in the far off future, you'll have a child (if we're unlucky). And you'll realize that ignorant attitudes and incredibly insensitive remarks like this are about the worst thing that anyone could ever say. A little boy died. A LITTLE BOY. He never got to grow up and be an asshat like you. He never got to post on the internet and display how socially retarded he was. He had his life ripped away from him by a bunch of bastardly cells.
At 12 years old,Ezra Chatterton was one hundred times the man you will ever hope to be. He faced an idomitable foe and lost his fight. His parents were devastated. An entire community grieved. One day, I hope you remember how you were, what you wrote, and I hope when that day comes, you are filled with enormous shame and remorse. Hopefully, one day you'll never have to say goodbye to your child for the very last time, have to bury him, and have to look at his empty room and struggle to remember what life was like before he passed.
God help you, you ignorant bastard.

A Yogg kill away from the Rusted Proto.
H:Putricide and H:Sindragosa kills away from the Bloodbathed Vanquisher.
And now my guild's raid attendance goes flying out the window.

Reminder of their unnatural hell or not, I bet a lot of players with Forsaken and/or DKs would love to have one of those bone dragons.
kooda Sep 3rd 2010 4:45AM
I'm a forsaken DK and yes it would be VERY nice to get one of those, sadly it's just not going to happen for me i hope someone else gets it though :D
Matthew Rossi Sep 2nd 2010 5:44PM
I'm fairly certain that Ezra's family would trade all that shit for one more day with their loved one.
I'm also fairly certain you are a horribly unctuous little person who gets off on saying hideously stupid things online and sneering at the responses. But as you sneer, know this: time will pass, you will age, your body will fail, and one day not all the sneering pretense to superiority in the world will save you from the decrepit body you inhabit, and on that day, all that can avail you is the regard of your fellows.
I'd suggest you start acting like a human being. You'll need some positive regard when that day comes, as it comes to us all given enough time.

I don't think it's outrageous to have to pay 5000g to get it, either you fight for it or pay for it, all's fare. This from a player who doesn't have a ton of gold, nor raids much... yet.
I just got my Druid to 80 about a week ago & loving it, I'm still questing, where I kinda' lost a lot steam with my Death Knight when I hit 80, (my only other 80 so far), but I'm really trying with with my Druid! I got epic flight & dual spec, where again my DK never did.
My guild is helping me out, & I'm going to be raiding more, so ether I'll find a 310 mount, or I'll have enough gold by Cata just to buy it.
Win win.

reading all this comments make me laugh, not at at fact that the kid died from cancer, but that all of you guys act like you actually cared about this kid and his condition, if it was a regular kid on the news, you wouldnt care at all, but knowing that it was a kid that played your beloved WoW, oh yeah "i cared and feel sorry for what happened to this kid and i feel for his family"
Kunikenwad! Sep 2nd 2010 6:03PM
@Zalvi
To defend yourself is the height of vileness. Seriously, it's a little boy. We care because we got to know him through Blizzard and learn of his fight against cancer. So yeah, he was special to all of us. I'd feel sad if I saw that some little girl died on the news because I'm a father and I couldn't bear to live one day without my son in this world. We are not all as disgusting and loathsome as you.
You are an irredeemable pile of human shit.
Siorra Sep 2nd 2010 6:07PM
I've got 4 of 'em so far. What about you? :P

I hope you sleep well.

I have lost aunts to cancer. I have seen vibrant people reduced to whimpering piles of arrow from it.
I have a 5 yr old and a 6 week old. If either of my boys was to get sick in the way Ezra did, I would beg, plead, lie, steal, or do whatever else was necessary to save them. When I read about him I grabbed my son and wouldn't let go for a while.
They boy had a bad deal. He still was a kind and loving soul. I hope you never have to deal with this or have a loved one deal with it.
It wasn't a story about WoW. Ezra's story was about a boy that was wonderful an was shown kindness by strangers. Everyone can learn a lesson from that. I sincerely hope you will.
I myself will always help a Tauren find his dog and I will tell the Horde on my server to let the Alliance visit Elder Wheathoof in peace. Anyone paying their respects to him deserves to do so in peace.
Maccabeus Sep 2nd 2010 7:06PM
Rossi's comment was awesome, but can we please moderate this thread a little more. Ban Zalvi, por favor. No one needs to see a Hershey stain like this on a lighthearted post.
slunk Sep 2nd 2010 7:12PM
I would so rather have paid 5k for 310% speed vs me doing the holiday events for a year.
Sayce Sep 2nd 2010 7:17PM
Zalvi,
Your base lack of compassion or thought for your fellow man will leave you with a terribly empty and meaningless life. While that isn't a consequence that I would ever want to wish upon another human, in your case, I don't think I will lose any sleep over it.
I sincerely hope that you someday find the maturity and conscience to feel shame and remorse for your attitude and comments, but you won't find me or probably anyone else responding to your comment to be holding our breath waiting for that to happen.
I didn't know Ezra, but his story touched my heart and I ache for his family. I don't have any children but I have lost a nephew, and I understand the ache that losing a precious child in your family can bring.
When I heard Ezra had passed away, I made a trip to Mulgore on my human pally to visit the character he voiced. I am also not a fan of the holiday events in WoW at all, but I make a point to go to pay my respects to the elder bearing his characters name during the Lunar Festival. That may seem silly to some, but it means something to me, and it reminds me that there are other people in this world that are worth caring about other than just myself.
Zalvi24 Sep 2nd 2010 7:18PM
!. i never said that i didnt feel sorry for the kid,
2. who are you people to judge me.
3. i had family members died from cancer, my 4 month old cousin, my 4 year cousin, and recently my grandmother who died of pancreatic cancer.
4 and last "let he who is without sin, cast the first stone"
Varda Sep 2nd 2010 7:24PM
Concerning those horrid, insensitive and disgusting comments about Ezra: It saddens and angers me that ANYONE would make such awful comments putting down Blizzard's kind actions and still manages to walk upon this Earth. Lord save us all from such a person. Fortunately the response to those remarks reminds me that most people are indeed decent.
As to the subject matter..I'm liking that you will be able to purchase the 310% training in Cat. I'm assuming that's for each character on your account and that it would apply to any and all flying mounts that your character would have, even those that are currently 280%? I'm rather fond of my character's current flyers but would love to see them go a bit faster.
Wow, my Paladin with Crusader Aura is REALLY going to like this!
5k gold is a high price but a fair one, considering it's the price of an epic now. For those of us with higher level characters that like to quest and do dailies (and thus make gold fairly easily) it's not a bad price at all...Especially if you are like me and don't have time for raiding or arena. I like that Blizzard gives us all many options in the game.
mothbitten1 Sep 2nd 2010 7:38PM
I am no math wiz at all, so forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is going from 2.8 times as fast as walking to 3.1 times as fast even noticeable?
Natsumi Sep 2nd 2010 7:56PM
Technically it's +280% speed and +310% speed, making it 3.8 times faster and 4.1 times faster than RUNNING not walking.
To answer your question, yes, it is noticeable. Think about how much faster you go when some Pally in AV actually puts up Crusader Aura, it's like that.

Gawd, isn't that truth? Sadly.
