Cataclysm Beta: Warrior glyphs

Unlike rogue and shaman glyphs, warrior glyphs do not appear to be finalized as of this beta push, but there have definitely been some changes and alterations that are worth discussing. We discussed the change to the philosophy of glyph design already this week but neglected to point out the specific new glyph options. Several glyphs are either entirely new or changed to reflect the "unambiguous increase" design goal.
- Bloodthirst Increases the damage of Bloodthirst by 10 percent. (The older glyph is apparently renamed Bloody Healing.)
- Slam This glyph increases Slam's critical strike chance by 5 percent.
- Heroic Throw With this glyph, your Heroic Throw will also apply a stack of Sunder Armor.
- Overpower Another flat 10 percent damage increase replaces the old glyph that gave Overpower 100 percent chance to proc after a parry.
- Raging Blow Raging Blow's glyph is unique in that it is the only one that reduces a cooldown, but since Raging Blow is still dependent on the warrior being enraged to use it, it's unlikely to change a rotation.
- Shield Slam Another flat 10 percent damage increase, replacing the old glyph that increases block chance by 10 percent after a Shield Slam.

Awesome glyphs
Onebaddude Sep 6th 2010 3:12PM
I hate to say it but I feel kind of meh. Like he says nothing groundbreaking or flashy. Nothing here is going to change what button gets hit next. I can't say I'm too worried though, I'm happy with warriors at the moment.
Imnick Sep 6th 2010 3:44PM
I think that's Blizzard's whole idea; they don't WANT glyphs to be changing what buttons you hit any more.
Glyphs like that were applied like bandaids to cover problems with a spec. Now that they have redone the talents they want to keep important changes like this within your talents while glyphs just provide quality of life bonuses or a flat DPS increase.
mor8idhomogenosuicide Sep 6th 2010 3:49PM
That;s sort of the point.
Blizzards design goal:
Prime glyphs provide unambiguous damage/healing/survivability/threat/etc increases without changing rotations.
Major glyphs provide dps etc. increases in creative ways, or provide utility. From what I've read they want glyphs to be for tweaking and don't want them to change rotations at all.
Minor glyphs are there for visual effects or convenience or "fun".
I'm assuming the glyphs in the article are all Prime glyphs, so wait till you see Major glyphs =)
I'm hoping Major glyphs are "flashy" as you put it.. not that I care all that much bout warriors =P Paladin ftw! Having said that after a year and a half of playing my nearest character to 80 alt is my 66 warrior \o/
Onebaddude Sep 6th 2010 7:09PM
Like I said I'm happy with warriors as is. I think they did a bang up job in Wrath. It would be nice to have a glyph that let you do a little bit more self healing in Cataclysm. I know its very warrior like to say that out loud, but its how I feel. Let the "go roll a pali" flaming begin.
Imnick Sep 6th 2010 9:50PM
Well in the post he did mention that there's still a glyph for 100% more bloodsurge healing, that's self healing right?
:P
Linainverse Sep 6th 2010 3:27PM
:pouts: I *liked* the original Overpower. That auto-proc made it part of my regular rotation. :sighs: Maybe I depended on it too much, but darn did I like it.
Otherwise, I'm with Onebaddude. Just meh so far.
Somnium.Kaze Sep 6th 2010 4:02PM
I think you're misunderstanding. Taste for Blood isn't going anywhere, so Arms will still have a guaranteed proc to use Overpower on. The old glyph just let you Overpower when you parry, which isn't much good unless you're tanking in battle stance for some reason.
esmelerendreves Sep 7th 2010 9:10AM
Nope. Overpower gives you a free attack after your TARGET dodges you, and the old glyph use to grant you a free attack also after a successfull parry FROM YOU TARGET. Blizzard removed the old talents because they were boring, and now they "revamp" the glyph system with prime glyphs that do the exact same thing as the old talents did. If only there were choices when selecting your prime glyphs, but there isn't.

But in pvp, parry happens quite frequently, and that glyph is practically a must. Really helps against people who spec tank, DKs, rogues(as if we needed more help), shamans, and anything that parries really. There is nothing more satisfying than getting free overpower procs.

testing...my other post didn't go through right. Feel free to down rate this comment if you feel it necessary.

The groundbreaking part of glyphs in Cata will imho be Major glyphs and the ability to switch between learned glyphs at will. While some hardcore raiders already did so (switching glyphs is not really expensive even if done 2-3 times per raid especially if the guild scribe assist with procurement) in Cata this will be simple and thus commonplace.
prenden2 Sep 6th 2010 4:13PM
I think my main beef with the Glyph system is that it, overall, never really provided the kind of fun that it promised. With that in mind, why don't we create a list of fun Warrior minor glyphs? With any luck an industrious reader might collate them and link them on the official forums.
- Minor Glyph of Whirlwind: Your Whirlwind hits have a 5% chance of transforming you into an Air Elemental for 15 secoands.
- Minor Glyph of Bloodrage: Your Bloodrage ability causes drops of blood to appear beneath you for 8 seconds.
- Minor Glyph of Mortal Strike: Your Mortal Strikes have a 1% chance to spawn an Avatar of Destruction. The Avatar of Destruction will not attack, nor will it be destroyable. It is the soul of combat; the harbinger of doom for any who oppose the warrior. Lasts 30 seconds.
Killik Sep 6th 2010 4:39PM
I'm picturing the Avatar of Destruction as looking like the evil pointing monkey from Family Guy.

THE CHOICE IS MADE! THE TRAVELLER HAS COME!
Imnick Sep 6th 2010 9:51PM
Although those would be funny I can't see that many people actually liking those glyphs.
And after a few goes they won't be that special any more.
Linainverse Sep 6th 2010 4:16PM
Really? Cool. I must have misread an earlier post. :p Thanks for letting me know, now I don't have to worry so much about relearning...what am I talking about. Of course I'll still have to relearn my rotation. I do with each expansion. XD :sighs: Oh well. But still, thanks! :)
Linainverse Sep 6th 2010 4:17PM
Grr...this was meant to be a reply to Somnium.Kaze. >_
khatre Sep 6th 2010 5:22PM
I personally liked the old shield slam more.
It was why i used it right off the bat in my rotation. The extra 10% chance to block was an extra 10% chance for my shield spike to damage everyone who attacked me. I treated it as free AOE threat to anyone dumb enough to attack me.
I could eat normal mobs by standing still and generating rage. :*(
Onebaddude Sep 6th 2010 6:58PM
Yeah, I would heroic throw...charge ...shield slam. I know shield spike was not the elitest jerks min Max choice, but it felt right to have mobs damage themselves on my shield.
