MMO Roundup: Last week on Massively

HK-47 steals the show in PAX The Old Republic trailer It was starting to feel like forever since any new information had come out of The Old Republic's well-oiled marketing machine. Happily, a new video released at PAX 2010 has temporarily quenched the drought and simultaneously provided a glimpse into ground-based combat in BioWare's upcoming Star Wars opus. Come for the combat footage, stay for the cameo from everybody's favorite snarky droid.

PAX 2010: Guild Wars 2 hands-on Guild Wars 2 is one of the most anticipated upcoming MMO releases, right alongside giants like Final Fantasy XIV and Star Wars: The Old Republic. This past weekend at PAX, Massively's Rubi Bayer had the opportunity to tackle the game head on with her own two hands.

CCP unveils EVE Online's latest expansion EVE made its fair share of noise at PAX as well. In addition to a brand new trailer (embedded at the top of this post), CCP also officially announced its latest expansion, which will bring improvements to a number of areas of play.
DDO Update 7 bringing half-elves, half-orcs, more DDO's Update 7 is coming sometime in October, and Massively spent some time at PAX chatting with members of the Turbine crew. They had some extremely exciting things to say about Update 7, including new races and a new raid.
|
Hands on with Rift: Planes of Telara The dungeon portal loomed ahead as a developer pushed a headset into my hands. "You heal," he said to me, then moved on to the other four players standing next to me. "You tank. You three DPS. Don't worry too much; you're all a little over-leveled for this dungeon. Let us know when you're ready."

So EVE promotes guild bank stealing? Do they promote keyloggers and gold farmers too?
Warren Sep 7th 2010 4:23PM
Thats the way the game is played. its not ninja ing. They gave you the access to there banks. its yours to steal. EvE is not a care bear game like WoW. I love WoW. But I did try EvE for a while. Its a totally different game.

They seem to promote playing however you want to play. You can be the hero, the villain and everything in between.

I keep wanting to try EVE. i keep hearing people talk about it and the things that you can do.

The idea of playing Eve is more exciting than actually playing Eve - it's all very well hearing about all this exciting stuff that happens in the community (but rarely in the game), but most of my gameplay involved staring at (admittedly very pretty) space vistas for weeks, as you waited for your electronic countermeasure certificate to come in the pose.
TL;DR: Eve was too slow, too isolating, and too esoteric to enjoy for me.
Furlover Sep 7th 2010 4:58PM
I found the same macster. Beautiful looking game with massive potential but horrendously slow, tedious, overly complicated to a fault and generally not fun starting out trying to learn it. I'm sure if you perservered religiously at it however it might be enjoyable, but for now I'll stick to WoW personally. ;p

I only played the trial but it seemed like the High Security space seemed like a snoozefest and unless you were in a corporation (EVE's equiv to Guilds) or being in a group (and sometimes even then, going into to low sec space was suicidal. If you thought STV ganking is bad, you wont be prepared for EVE's swarms of D-Bags.

I tried the EVE trial a long time ago, at first you will be stunned by the graphics, but after your 500th warp it just dies on you. Plus the leveling system was basically cash in your 15$ a month and wait in the exp que.
You come to a game like WOW and take for granted how maintained it can be until you try EVE where if you lose, the developers get paid. Everything to economics, pvp, pve, is unregulated. Basically it is the game that allows you to be whatever you want to be and do whatever you want.

Hated Eve.
On a better note....I really really want to play SW:TOR. It's like a combination of my two favorite MMOs, WoW and CoX, along with the wonderful ME2 story development layout.

Half elves? I guess they didn't mind mating cross-species.
Then again if she was an elf I wouldn't mind either.

Yay Rift! Looking better and better. Ignore at your own rift..I mean risk. :)

EvE is like being dropped into the middle of a jungle with a gun, a knife and a gps device and told to do whatever the hell you want.
WoW is being dropped in a mall and told to follow the yellow line to the gap and buy a pair of pants. Then follow the red line to cinnabun where you will purchase a treat. Then follow the white line to the parking lot to your car and go home.
Neither one is better than the other, just vastly different. Some like the challenge of EvE some like the safety and "being told what to do" of WoW.

Eve is a game that can not be compared to any other mmo today. Its not fast paced. Its strategic warfare. If you log into it expecting super fast action filled with awesome explosions at every turn but not much depth then its not a game for you..
I play both WoW and Eve pretty actively. I like the slow submarine type warfare you find in eve and the high risk of the pvp that can be found there vs the carebear mechanics that make up WoW. WoW is good for instant gratification ('Hey sweet, I found a candle on this Kobold!') while Eve is good for the long term gratification ('Hey sweet, This site that I scanned down in low security space had a Sansha battleship that dropped a sweet ass gun!').
I´m not bashing anyones game. Each to their own :D Find the game you like and play it. I´m just saying that both games have been popularly oversimlified to the point of being erronous. F.x : Eve is a sucky slowass game where nothing happens and you look at tables all day long (Gives the wrong impression). WoW is a game where there is no reward. its just pure grindfest all the way through.. oh and its fod kids only! (Not true either) Both of these is wrong as the respective playerbase can attest to.

EvE is not for those of a faint heart. Compared to WoW it's hardcore stuff.
I tried EvE. It was crapload of learning at first, then grind, then social interactions began, then there was a story of a war, insult and a terrible revenge.
EvE is nothing like WoW is. There you work literally for MONTHS to achieve something and you can lose that something in a blink of an eye. WoW PvP teaches you about the value of a fraction of a second, while EvE PvP teaches you about the value of months.
Everything they say in their videos are absolutely true, but there are things they don't say - astonishing learning curve, and equally astonishing time required to do just about anything. Where a single death in WoW sets you back for around 3 minutes, a single death in EvE can set you back several months and seriously damage you mentally at the same time.
EvE is as serious as internet game can go, imo.
