For those Alliance wondering how to get things started, you need to speak with the High Tinker in Ironforge first. He'll send you to Kharanos.

Don't rush in where night elves fear to tread! Get your marching orders first and then you'll be properly prepared to beat some trogg posteriors. (Maybe that's why gnomes like 'em large and cannot previcaricate: easier to kick!)
