Breakfast Topic: Are you catching up on out-of-game activities?
This Breakfast Topic has been brought to you by Seed, the Aol guest writer program that brings your words to WoW.com.
Before the maddening world changes of Cataclysm hit and we follow the shark with freakin' laser beams down to level our toons to 85, we are left with the question of what to do for the next few months. As with both previous expansions, it becomes sort of a waiting game for new content. The apathy of "why bother?" hits, and logging on becomes less and less frequent -- logging on just to check the AH, or for a guild raid, or to do dailies, and quickly off again, waiting with anticipation for when you can fly in the old world.
Some of us are hardcore gamers, but like many WoW players who get engrossed in our game of choice, we may have missed some of the other stellar video games that came out this year. Are you catching up on these titles while you wait for the next nugget of WoW content to come out? Or are you a TV and movie viewer, catching up on shows? Or are you catching up on real-life stuff you missed while in game, like spending time with friends and family and getting caught up with work, so you can take those couple of days off when Cataclysm actually launches?
Personally, I found that I fit into multiple categories here, spending time with my girlfriend, gaining relationship points for the inevitable amount I am going to tick her off when Cataclysm launches. I have also been playing some games I missed in the meantime, such as Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Awakenings -- well, not so much missed, but saw their shortcuts glaring at me, waiting on me to play them, while I logged in to WoW instead.
So where do you fit? Where are your spare hours going, since you aren't in Azeroth as much? Or are you in game just as much as you always were?

You mean there are activities outside of WoW?
I hang out with friends, watch movies, and play golf when I am not playing WoW.
Hoof Sep 8th 2010 8:36AM
Of course there are other activities outside WoW :P
I just sit around thinking about what to do. When a good game comes out, I have no problems at all skipping over WoW for a few weeks to play that game, so I'm up-to-date on all my games. I've done everything there is to do in WoW in my book. I've beaten the Lich King with my guild, I have Loremaster, I've been inside every dungeon known to man countless times, all reputations I even remotely care about are exalted, etc. I logged on for the events yesterday, finished in 30 minutes or so and was left again wanting something new to do.
I've felt like this towards the end of each cycle of WoW's life. Since I've never been much of an alt guy, I usually end up investing most of my time in the multiplayer of whatever game a large bulk of my friends are hitting up. Which as of late has been playing the Halo 3 campaign on Legendary and increasing the number of skulls until we felt sufficiently challenged and refreshing ourselves on the story in preparation for the upcoming Halo: Reach.

I'm catching up on other games. I just finished Metroid: Other M last night. I also recently finished Saint's Row 1 and 2 and Red Faction Guerilla. I need to see if the latest Prince of Persia game has been patched yet (shipped with a game-breaking glitch). And I've got all 3 Borderlands DLC, but haven't gotten around to playing any of it. I also started Alpha Protocol the other day, but not really liking it much.

Speaking of which how did you find the 2.5D with a dpad - personally i disliked it to start with but in time i got use to it - its really most annoying when precision 3d movement is require but that is rare, personally i forgave any gameplay problems or the lack of the dimension due to the added dimension added to Samus's character. I always pictured her quite similar to how they portraid her.
Samutz Sep 8th 2010 10:17AM
The d-pad only bothered me on some of the platforming areas where I had to jump at an angle, but being unable to simply run off a ledge on accident helps.
What irritated me the most was the forced first-person sequences where you had to look around and lock on to some tiny thing without knowing what that tiny thing is. Green blood on the grass, for example.
But ultimately, I liked the game and will probably play it some more to try to get 100% item completion.

I'm currently replaying Metroid Other M trying to get 100% so that I can attempt Hard mode. I love the game. Have yet to see a metroid game that's a disapointment.
This while waiting for some raid or something interesting on WoW.

I find myself completely removed from the game. For some reason I still have a subscription, but I'm mostly just checking up on TV shows and the like.
I even logged yesterday to check out the two events, but just could not find the interest to do so.
Am I missing anything?
Boz Sep 8th 2010 10:03AM
So completely removed that you watched newsfeeds and logged in to participate in the pre-expansion events the day they launched, then read and responded to this WoW.com entry the very next day?
I believe by "completely removed" you meant, "I can't stop myself from playing and gobbling up every last bit of information I can find!"
Me too.

I've gotta agree with Bernie on this one - I still read WoW.com as I'm still interested in the game in abstract. But logging on to do dailies or run instances? I burnt myself out on that weeks ago. I'm sure as soon as Cata hits I'll be back to logging in all the time but in the meantime - Mass effect 1 and 2, Lord of the rings Online, Fallout 3 and Civ $ have all more than kept my attention :)

I play this an that. I shoot some stuff in borderlands, play some torchlight, I bounce around a good bit between a few different games. But I'm not really waiting for the release of Cataclysm so much as I am waiting for the round of upcoming holidays. I love Halloween, its the only holiday I give a crap about in the least, also I want a brewfest ram for I am a whore for mounts, and of course that includes the headless horsemans mount, but well the way they changed to the gift bag garbage I seem to be screwed for that this year.

I coin the term OoWoW.
Blueing Sep 8th 2010 8:16AM
Definitely TV Shows (specially reality shows :P) and movies.
Lissanna Sep 8th 2010 8:19AM
I'm too busy beta testing, lol.
Anathemys Sep 8th 2010 8:54AM
I'm too busy envying people who are beta testing. /pout

The interesting thing in "catching up" with RL stuff is becoming aware of how many things we miss when we play WoW "full time".
Josin Sep 8th 2010 8:25AM
Lose interest in WoW? But there's Gnomeregan to save!
Keveline Sep 8th 2010 8:28AM
I've been using the time to level a Horde alt, my first "serious" Horde toon. I wanted to see at least some of the game from the other side and am loving it. My little orc just dinged 45 yesterday and is buzzsawing his way through Feralas and the dungeon finder.
I've also gone back to Dragon Age and am loving it again. Another of my time sucking hobbies is miniatures wargaming, so I've been able to fit more of that in as well.
I haven't seen any sign of my guild in weeks...I hope we're still a guild and that it's just the summer/pre-Cata lull!
xSchwarzerWindx Sep 8th 2010 12:28PM
Same. We went to a different server (the 5 of us) and are leveling Horde without any Heirlooms or "cheats" (gold from an 80, etc) for the first time in 3 years. We've been Alliance the last several years and this will be our last go-through in the old world, and we're doing it hardcore Vanilla style.
I miss having 'looms and it's a damn pain in the ass getting gold strictly through doing low level gathering, but man it's really rewarding. :D
We should all be L20 soon, and mounted up and really burning along.
Sinthar Sep 8th 2010 8:31AM
Love the Dr Evil quote - sharks with freaking laser beams :)
liamgilchrist Sep 8th 2010 8:33AM
I decided to take up serious pvp and arena as raiding is just grinding to a halt. if your determined to keep playing WoW i highly suggest this.
