Addon Spotlight: Addons for clickers
Addon Spotlight focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same. This week, please don't berate the clickers too badly in the comments.
Addon Spotlight strives to educate and empower, bringing you tips and tools to enrich your World of Warcraft experience. Playstyles are as varied as the addons that support them, and as a comprehensive writer, I try to cover everyone's specific setups. One playstyle that is a bit of a foreign concept to me is mouse clicking. Clickers are often derided and ridiculed for their point-and-click interaction with the user interface. Sometimes, you will be watching that YouTube video of a heroic kill, and the cursor is flying around the screen a lot more than you are used to. You've found the elusive clicker.
Now, I'm not a clicker. Like I said before, I never really understood the clicker lifestyle. I've known two clickers in my life, and they couldn't be more different in playstyle; one was fast and furious with ability activation, and the other was the worst hunter I have even known. Addon Spotlight is a neutral, happy and fair ground. I'll give my opinions, sure, but helping people is the true goal. So, clickers, this spotlight is for you. We are here to help you during your point-and-click adventure. Never say I didn't do anything for you!
Tongue-in-cheek clicker comments aside, some people truly need to use a mouse when playing World of Warcraft. In particular, I know at least two people who do not have total motion control over some of their fingers because of injuries sustained while fighting in Iraq and injured in a workshop, respectively. These people have limited motion in their right hands -- enough to use a mouse and click, but not enough to have the range of motion to press multiple buttons with all of their fingers. Let's see if we can help these players out.
Where hydrogen is built into Healium
One of the hardest roles to fulfill as a clicker is healing. Compact setups and Grid/Healbot/whatever can alleviate some of the stress, but the fact remains that two clicks have to do the job of one click and a button press, or potentially just one click. Let's make healing for you clickers a little bit easier. Enter Healium, a healing addon that might not have been created with clickers in mind, but certainly does the job.
Essentially, Healium is a combination unit frames, action bar and healing addon that adds your heal spells next to each party or raid member's unit frame. Clicking on a heal will cast that heal on that specific person. Simple, single clicks for healers who insist on using the mouse. It couldn't be easier.
The bars are all customizable and sizable, which will be a huge boon for larger raids where things could get a bit cluttered. Healium also has the ability to track debuffs and HoTs, adding more functionality to this solid setup. One of Healium's selling points is that people who do have to click for whatever reason can forego the macro and modifier (Ctrl, Alt) button combos that make up so many other healing interfaces.
For your viewing pleasure, here is a video demonstrating Healium:
Healium does its job well, reducing the distance between target and heal. Check it out if it sounds like a solution to that type of distance problem for you.

More like Clique-r, am i rite?
Clique is one of those addons that has become ubiquitous in the WoW community -- it is light, massively helpful and customizable, turning your clicks into complex button presses. For clickers, Clique can make a world of difference with reaction times for healing, taunting and other abilities.
I've talked about Clique before but only in the healing space. Clique is so much more than just a healing addon complement. Clique is a complex button binder that allows you assign abilities, buttons and macros to your mouse clicks. More abilities can be bound using modifier keys like Alt and Ctrl with your clicks.
One of the most amazing aspects of Clique is that you can set sets of clicks based on the type of creature or player character you are clicking on. Harmful actions can be specified when clicking on a boss or mob, and beneficial actions can use the same click when over a friendly target or player. This works wonderfully for me as a warrior tank, for instance, where a Clique setup can use Charge or Taunt on an enemy, but the same click can Intervene on my specified mouseover target. For DPS or healers, the sky is the limit with abilities that you can cast on other players to improve their damage, while performing harmful actions or cooldowns on enemies under the click.
Clique is one of those addons I wish Blizzard would develop into their own stock user interface, much like how a simple Power Auras setup is coming in Cataclysm (more on that soon). The functionality of Clique blows my mind, and I know it can be done now in the default UI with some finagling and tricks, but a simple interface pane would be wonderful.

Speedy Actions
One of the biggest counterpoints to the clicker playstyle is that reaction times for clickers are lower than that of button pressers, since the time a clicker takes to get to the ability and then use that ability is lengthened by the pointer travel. One way to make actions happen faster in WoW is an addon like Speedy Actions from Shadowed. By default, WoW activates an ability that you click on after you release your mouse click. Speedy Actions changes this behavior by activating an ability, button or skill when the mouse is pressed down, rather than on release. You'll be surprised how much this makes a difference when clicking on abilities.
Speedy Actions can hopefully give you a better responsiveness and quicker actions when using the mouse. The addon is simple and works, two trademarks of Shadowed's excellent addons. Use the commands /sa, /speedyactions or /speedyaction to see Speedy Actions configuration.

Twitter suggestion: G13 and G15 keyboard
Do you like inane banter, making fun of Mike Sacco, terrible stick figure drawings and pictures of my cats? You should follow me on Twitter at @gomatgo. I talk about Addon Spotlight and WoW there, too! Twitter follower @skisulli reminded me of an awesome clicker resource -- the Logitech G13 Advanced Gameboard or the G15 keyboard. I am a G15 user myself and cannot recommend it more, if not just for the little screen that tells me when I get whispers in WoW, even when I am alt-tabbed out of the game. Rock on, Logitech.
The new G13s and G15s have some awesome macroable buttons called the G-buttons that can input button combinations, e.g. Alt 1, Ctrl 1, etc. What this means is that you can create mouseover macros or button combination macros for these one-button solutions and still retain a mouseover atmosphere, but have a smaller amount of buttons to remember that can do complex actions. In fact, I think you guys deserve a proper mouseover macro tutorial, but we'll save that for the near future. For now, know that the G-buttons are awesome for macroing complex button combinations to, and they work like a charm.
Buy a G13 or G15 keyboard at Best Buy, Newegg or your local electronics store.
So, there you have it, clickers. Hopefully these addons can improve your game, help you with reaction times and give you the help you need if you're just one of those people who doesn't want to deal with complicated button combinations. See you all next week!
Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. If you're new to mods, Addons 101 will walk you through the basics; see what other players are doing at Reader UI of the Week. If there's a mod you think Addon Spotlight should take a look at, email mat@wow.com.

That seems like an awfully tiny keypad to use with a thumb...
Troela Sep 14th 2010 10:15AM
I love the mouse, but I don't really use more than 4, sometimes 5 buttons. And I have a small hand/thumb :)
kaosgrace Sep 14th 2010 10:19AM
Yeah, I'm in that boat (can't reliably hit ctrl/alt/shift while hitting other keys with the same hand), but I find mouseover keybinds much better. I could never cede that much screen real estate to duplicate actionbar buttons. Imagine a 25...aaagh!

I got a g13 for my laptop, it was too difficult to play on a laptop keyboard. I set up my bartender action bars to mimic the layout of the g13 in case I forgot where my abilities where keybound while I learned how to use it. I also modded my g13 to have raised dots on my center keys, like the homerow on a standard keyboard.
Just some tips for those looking to buy one.

Just a note on the G13 keypad for mac players:
I own one and it works great for the PC.... BUT! The mac drivers for it are not well supported. Currently, plugging in the keypad causes your processor to rev up to 100% and stay there. I don't know what's hogging up all the cycles, but I'm not a fan. Not to mention mac is always one patch behind. Quite a shame, I love this keypad.

I healed a 5 man the other day without the use of healbot. It felt so weird, but I adjusted pretty quick. So funny how dependent we can become on addons, but I always setup my keybinds for those Murphy's Law moments where an addon fails. I find it nearly impossible to heal a BG or raid without an addon though. I could probably squeak by just using the raid frames provided by xperl, but I'd rather not.

Does Healium work in a raid setting?
Snowfeather Sep 9th 2010 1:53PM
I admit, I was a clicker for the longest time. My problem is more that I am severely right handed, so much so in fact that trying to use my left hand on the keyboard without watching the fingers move is almost a nightmare. I used to have to use arrows to move in combination with mouse turning so I could make sure I didn't hit any other keys in the area. Eventually 2 years ago I migrated to wasd, but I still don't use q or e for strafing, instead those are keyed to moonkin form and swift flight. Moonkin for shifting fast for slowing effects and swift flight for those 'oh shit I just jumped off a cliff' moments.
The solution to my click playing habits? Naga. My husband and mother-in-law fought over who would get it for me last Christmas, and I can't be happier with the thing. I have all my major abilities bound to 1-6 or shift 1-6, with my big spells on 12 so its out of the way and I don't hit it on accident. On my moonkin this was starfall, however when I started playing my hunter I made it feign death. [amusement ensued when I picked up the moonkin for an icc run and tried to drop aggro and instead pulled 3 trash packs...]

Ive been a clicker since day one. When healing, DPSing And tanking I always click with my mouse in my right hand, and leave my left hand to man the WASD keys to move. Ive found a simple way to make clicking my action bars easier: Cluster my MAIN abilites in one area where the three lower action bars overlap, and then radiate outwards my other abilities as per their usefulness. This allows me to keep my mouse in a relatively small area, requireing little movement. When healing however, I cluster my Cooldowns in the center of my three bars, and use Healbot to heal people. I developed this stratgy LONG before I even heard of keybinding your rotation, lol, It seems in my Newb days I figured out something that has helped me ever since I started playing. When I did hear about keybinding my rotation though, I Tried it out, and discovered something VERY important: When I was 10 I broke my left wrist, and ever since the bones have been in slightly different places, so moving the fingers and wrist of my left hand ALOT causes it to sieze up, and lock in one position, usually an uncomfortable one, making it next to useless. Even just using WASD and typing for a few hours causes it to stiffen slightly, so starting out the game as a clicker was actually pretty beneficial, because I didnt have to learn how to play all over again.
This fact doesnt stop some people from being @-holes about it tho, I once got lectured by a tree druid that by clicking to heal, I was wasting valuable time by moving my mouse, and that just because of a little "stiffness," as he put it, was not excuse enough to endanger my raid with slow healing. Oh well, he earned a WELL justified place on my ignore list that day.

I'm a warrior tank and can not imagine switching from clicking to keybinds. There are just so many abilities to keep track of and, at least for me, the downside of pressing the wrong cooldown far outweighs the time gap of cursor movement which is generally within the GCD anyway.
I also have my important abilities (taunts and charges etc) slap bang in the middle (and slightly larger) but rather than radiating out in importance I have rotation and standard stuff on the left and cooldowns and odd ones like disarm on the right clustered so i can get the pointer to the right neighbourhood with no thinking.
I'm sure buttons have their advantages but the pain of swapping over i just dont want to go through :)
AltMaster Sep 9th 2010 9:10PM
My main reason for playing WoW is fun. And I'm a clicker. :)
I'm probably not as good as the elitist jerks, or even many raiders. But I'll bet I have more fun.
For me it's 20+ years of computer usage and not nearly that long of using the computer mainly as a gaming machine. I've always played games on computers, but I can look back at the games I've played and see that I've not only never enjoyed keyboard control (I also have the retarded left hand syndrome another poster mentioned) but I've never even mastered using anything but the arrow keys (as opposed to WASZ or whatever).
I can remember playing golf games in amber or green and black, and doom (arrow keys for me), but my fingers rarely ventured left of the arrow keys.
Then Starcraft. Other than grouping hotkeys, all mouse all the time. Then Warcraft (for me 2.5 years ago) and clicking was how I played it, and still do.
The "better" way is far more "task" than "game" to me. I'm sure I could perform better if I had this repetitive playstyle that feels like Mavis Beacon teaches typing, and I *can* type, but I KNOW it would be less immersive and more elitist, and FAR less fun.
In a second I'm going to click "Add Comment"...I'm sure I could probably hit enter, but I miss my mouse after all this typing.

I love TMBG. TMBG fans that play WoW and read (and comment on) wow.com = quintessential geeks.

I know that most don't like to admit it, so I'll go first:
Hello. My name is Vyle... and I am a clicker.
Dreyja Sep 9th 2010 2:16PM
The G13 was the best thing to EVER happen to me. ;-p I always hated using the keyboard to move at all. I even tried consoles and the Belkin first but the G 13 is the best of the BEST.
Elgan Sep 9th 2010 2:35PM
I'm a clicker, have always been, and not once has anyone been able to tell.
I currently tank both 10 and 25-man ICC and RS for my guild and never have an issue.
When I go ret, I'm one of our top DPS.
In fact, as long as they are good at it, I'll posit that clickers have better situational awareness since they're used to having to dart their eyes across their screen, looking at different abilities, cooldowns, etc.
Besides, with the GCD, just how long does it really take to move a mouse less than an inch on your screen? More than a second (with capped haste)? I think not.
Speedy Actions sounds like something right up my alley, though. Can't wait to give it a shot.
cidninja Sep 9th 2010 9:52PM
i'm gonna go ahead and say that doesn't make sense. why would being a clicker give you better awareness? you literally have to click your abilities. having to take your eyes off the middle of the screen or whatever isn't a big deal, but then you have to actually move your mouse to each ability each gcd and click it. as far as i know pallies pretty much don't get a single free gcd in their rotations so you must be giving up some if you ever have to move. do you keyboard turn?
clundgren Sep 9th 2010 2:56PM
I can speak to this, as I play ret and am a clicker/hybrid. Yes, I keyboard turn in melee unless i have to make a really quick turn and gtfo like on Sindragosa, in which case it's easy enough to use the mouse without interrupting rotation. But most movement in pve melee consisted of minor adjustments, and I like having my mouse free.
On pvp I have had to adopt a more hybrid style because keyboard turning handicaps you, but on the other hand, in pvp you also never sit and pound away on one target like you can in pve.
Cheers
Tirrimas Sep 9th 2010 3:04PM
In all my playing, I'm a hybrid clicker/hotkey user. I click unit frames to target party members and hotkeys to cast heals. On my hunter, I hotkey almost exclusively. The only time I click an ability is when I need to use one of those highly-situational abilities that don't have a keybind.
I tried Clique (it's really quite clever - makes healing a no-brainer) but I can't stand the Alt and Ctrl modifiers. It has nothing to do with physical ability, it's that I can't keep straight which modifier does what. I end up casting the wrong spell 99% of the time.
Titanwatcher Sep 9th 2010 3:15PM
I've clicked almost exclusively since day one, over 2 years ago. As a warrior tank, I can't imagine binding all of the six billion abilities I have. Sure, I've made adjustments. As someone above mentioned, I've learned to mouse turn on things like blistering cold, and I have heroic strike as 2, devastate as 3 and cleave as 4, so if I absolutely MUST use my mouse for something else or have to look away from the monitor for a moment, I can hit 2,3 for single target threat or 3,4 for aoe, but for the most part, I use my left hand to turn, move and strafe, and use my mouse to click.
Taunt, last stand, and shield wall, of course, are bound to mouse 3, 4, and 5 though. I've tried keybinding my entire rotation before, and I loathed the fact that I couldn't turn, strafe, and backup while simultaneously maintaining my rotation perfectly, as I can while clicking (since the time for the cursor to move from ability to ability is far less than the gcd, even during BL).
