The latest and greatest
Cataclysm beta build includes a list of new titles available in the game. We don't yet know exactly how we'll gain access to these titles, but we're certainly free to speculate. Probably most exciting to players is the return of the PvP titles.

- The old PvP battleground titles have been brought back.
The old PvP titles from vanilla
WoW were earned mostly through time investment rather than strictly win/loss ratio and were required to get access to better tiers of PvP gear. The battleground titles were scrapped in
The Burning Crusade but are now returning with the introduction of
rated battlegrounds. The titles will now be based on your win/loss ratio, rather than grinding time. The old PvP titles were:

I really hope those that went through "The Grind" back in the classic days get to keep something special. I never got there, but had I gotten Grand Marshal, I wouldn't want so many other people walking around with it, or I to lose it.
I guess we'll have to see how they implement them.

I understand why they are bringing back the old pvp titles, but I do hope they find some way to recognize those who attained the titles under the original system as well. Perhaps the veteran titles mentioned above will be used to so so.
While they may have had more to so with time than anything else, the old pvp titles were the one sure way to distinguish long term players. Whether Grand Marshall or Private, those titles were one way for veteran players to distinguish themselves.
I realize the titles are perfect for the new rated BG system, I'll miss having that veterans's badge to display proudly.

On my first account I ground to Sergeant Major, and I always wished the titles would come back. However I don't like it being linked to rated battlegrounds. That simply seems too limited for my liking coming from a server where the Horde routinely holds Wintergrasp with Alliance occasionally holding it.

There already is a recognition system for those who already attained the titles back in Vanilla wow... feats of strength achievements.

I'm excited by the return of the old PvP titles if by "excited" you mean "extremely irritated." I put a lot of effort into getting my Blood Guard title at level 46 (reaching Legionnaire before level 50 proved a practical impossibility). It may have required time investment, but at that level, it also required doing well and winning most of the time. Either the old title needs to be changed to something like the suggested "Veteran Blood Guard," or Blizzard needs to come up with new titles.
I was glad to see the old system scrapped, but I still think Blizzard should recognize the effort of those who attained their titles under it.

I have to say that after they made my gear worthless, took away my ability to talk in world defense channel, if they take away my title...the kitten gets it.

NOTHING is what happens. Everyone else will have those titles as well.
Personally, I really don't care. I have two hunters with Sergent and I feel bad showing it off because it doesn't mean that I am some "epic wow player", all it means is that I pvped at that time in the game with that character, and I was probably really bad.
Other players should have a chance to get those titles as well. Just because they are new doesn't mean they are worse or less devoted to the game in any way (moar players means more fun to me). This whole "blizzard owes me something for the old pvp title (that I got for just pvping)" is ridiculous and childish at best, they don't owe you &$*%.

Since the achievement for killing the whale shark is a line from Moby Dick, this is definitely a reasonable assumption.
It could also possibly be a new fishing title, but who knows. I'd say one of the two for sure.
