Cataclysm Beta: Old weather flying will cost 250g

Zarhym -- New Flight SkillWe've added a new flying skill called Flight Master's License. When World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is released, players who purchase the expansion will see this skill available from flight trainers for 250 gold once they reach level 60. This new skill is required for flying around all Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms zones, including the new level 80-85 zones.
Zarhym -- New Flight SkillThe cost for this is 250 gold. The name has also changed. I've updated my original post with the new information. :)
Previously, during the Twitter Dev Chat in April, the developers responded that more than likely, players would be able to fly from the beginning without purchasing the tongue-in-cheek "Old Weather Flying." As for why Blizzard is now adding such a skill, I have no idea. I don't mind ponying up the gold, considering the rate at which gold is earned in Cataclysm feels much faster than in the original game. My best guess is that Blizzard still wants flying in the old world to feel special and be a goal players will strive to reach for rather than stumble across. Also, it appears that if you do not have the Cataclysm expansion, you will not see this ability as trainable -- if you want to fly in the old world, you'll need the new expansion. What do you think about the Flight Master's License?

Yeah, I agree. I think it's a fair trade.

Also, if you don't have the expansion so you don't have the new 80-85 zones, then the developers don't have to worry about the players accidentally flying into them on flying mounts in the old world. It makes it easier to "seal them off" from those who don't have the content.

I was kinda surprised that they weren't originally going to have an old world flying skill, but hey, 250G is perfect price. Something that a lvl 60 would have to grind a bit for, but if you can wait then easy for an 80-85 to get. And not something to cry about when you get an alt up to lvl for it.

i wish it were more, there needs to be more gold sinks and things to earn. i think it should be at least 2.5k

I am Completely fine with Paying a Cheap Price for flying in the Old World, though.. I Have no Idea where you would train for it.. and Upon the Launch I would Rather not Visit the old world until I Can fly.. so if you can Train in Dalaran.. the Idea is Fine..

Random capitalization Is quite Random, Don't you Think?

"Players who purchase the expansion will see this skill available from flight trainers for 250 gold once they reach level 60."
"see this skill available from flight trainers for 250 gold"
"available from flight trainers"
"flight trainers"
Flight Trainers such as Hira Snowdawn in Dalaran.
Or the one next to Stormwind Flightmaster (in Cata). Or the one in Orgrimmar. Or the ones in Outland.

I know plenty of people who will hate how low the level req. is.
Me, I don't really care. I like the name, actually. Makes it seem like you're training to be a flight master, as in you can fly your own taxi.
Tremelizzer Sep 10th 2010 12:21PM
You know, 60 is already the level you learn how to fly around.
Snuzzle Sep 9th 2010 11:25PM
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't expecting this, and the price is more than fair for level 60 players, but I still think it's bull hockey.
Amaxe Sep 9th 2010 11:38PM
The price is low enough that it won't really break the bank. However, I do dislike how they go back on themselves. It's kind of like how cold weather flying was supposed to be gained by doing a quest in Sholazar at 78, but it was replaced with 1000g price.
Continuity wise I actually like it. Loose as it is, it allows me to imagine that until the Horde-Alliance war, the flight in Azeroth was strictly controlled, but with a war on, restrictions are loosened.
devilsei Sep 9th 2010 11:55PM
Don't forget the middle-man for Cold weather, it used to also be you could do the quest, or just pay for it, but they figured it be "best" to remove the quest entirely. I swear they said at one time or another they weren't going to do this... but hey, Actiblizz, them saying they aren't going to do this just means at this exact second we won't implement it now...
and expect the price to go up to 10x the amount currently.

Could be worse. Could be an annual fee...

I would -much- rather prefer this to be a quest of some sort. To wit, I really wish they'd make flying (at all) be a quest related reward. Maybe you get a special quest at 58, teaching you how to fly right before you enter the dark portal. Trial accounts, of course, are SoL. Hell, maybe the mats for the quest are 50g a pop and sold at specific vendors across azeroth, making people plunk down some gold and some effort for it.
Don't gate the Cata content at all. LET people see the new beautiful zones, let them fly through hyjal. Just don't let them quest, gain any experience or get loot from creatures in those zones until they buy the expansion.
This is like, free advertising. Give people flying, let them gawk at the gorgeousness of the new expansion and anyone left doubting will come in -droves- to cata.

Pardon my misuse of 'to wit'. I should've said 'furthermore'.

So what does this flight barrier do to prevent players with the two seater rocket mounts from pony expressing the players without cata into these zones?
Natsumi Sep 10th 2010 12:12AM
Obviously they will not be able to mount the 2 seater OR you won't be able to fly them around.
