Cataclysm Beta: Old weather flying will cost 250g

Zarhym -- New Flight SkillWe've added a new flying skill called Flight Master's License. When World of Warcraft: Cataclysm is released, players who purchase the expansion will see this skill available from flight trainers for 250 gold once they reach level 60. This new skill is required for flying around all Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms zones, including the new level 80-85 zones.
Zarhym -- New Flight SkillThe cost for this is 250 gold. The name has also changed. I've updated my original post with the new information. :)
Previously, during the Twitter Dev Chat in April, the developers responded that more than likely, players would be able to fly from the beginning without purchasing the tongue-in-cheek "Old Weather Flying." As for why Blizzard is now adding such a skill, I have no idea. I don't mind ponying up the gold, considering the rate at which gold is earned in Cataclysm feels much faster than in the original game. My best guess is that Blizzard still wants flying in the old world to feel special and be a goal players will strive to reach for rather than stumble across. Also, it appears that if you do not have the Cataclysm expansion, you will not see this ability as trainable -- if you want to fly in the old world, you'll need the new expansion. What do you think about the Flight Master's License?

I imagine it'll be like Ghostlands, Silvermoon City, Eversong Woods, Exodar, the boat to Azuremyst Isle, and Sunreaver's Sanctum and the Silver Enclave in Dalaran: probably just boot people out once entering the zone (and exiting the vehicle). "You must have the /Cataclysm/ expansion installed in order to enter this zone."

so here is a zinger.. why didn't they just do that with this?
survey says?
1. to get the most amount of people to spend money on the expansion, even if they don't care about the 81-85 content.
i understand that flying in the old world is being introduced in this expansion, and blizzard has every right to require you to buy cataclysm in order to fly. i'm just a little dissapointed that this is the way it's going to be as i really don't care about the new high level content, but really only want to do the new old world content... while flying. but meh i can put up with ground mounting it if it means i don't have to pay blizzard another 40 bucks.

at least its only 250. if it was going to be another 5000g bill i would just frikkin give up and ride on my deathcharger.

I'm just wondering how this will affect those of us with the new refer a friend mount, flying multi pasanger, does this mean i can haul newbies around in the old world or will they have to have that level of flying to hitch a ride?

250g? Works for me; it's been easy on all my toons to get Cold Weather Flying and dual spec well before 77 on live, and have all the money for profession training and spell training. Bar none, a very cheap investment, and as several others have pointed out, the best way to keep non-Cata players from getting to Cata content.
Bodewell Sep 10th 2010 12:17AM
No way this stays at 250G.
Amaxe Sep 10th 2010 12:36AM
Well, it might stay low. Remember, flying in the old world was one of the big promises of cataclysm. If you suddenly have to pay the equivalent of epic flight for it, it could piss off enough people to consider not continuing.
I mean I have enough to get my main the 310% flight now. But if I had to go come up with *ANOTHER* 5000g to use it in Azeroth, I'd go tell Blizzard to go @#$% themselves and wait for SW:TOR to come out.
Seems to me that making the purchase of Cataclysm mandatory to use Azeroth flight is enough and the amount to buy the skill should be small.

remember northrend flying in the beta? you got it from a quest. then they up and decided to change it to cost 1k gold. i would expect the same here. come launch day you'll be staring at a 5k gold cost for flying in old world.
Duulket Sep 10th 2010 12:27AM
I personally would have rather it be free but at least it is not 5k gold. I can handle paying 250g for Old Weather Flying.
Natsumi Sep 10th 2010 12:30AM
I'm poor! I don't like this cost! *rabble rabble*
Lukoil Sep 10th 2010 12:36AM
"We have considered the concept of “Old Weather Flying.” Just kidding. More than likely, you’ll just be able to fly from the beginning."
More than likely != 100% sure

Well, it's been awhile since I've been downranked...
...so I'll just mention Dance Studios as a reminder that Blizzard breaks promises
(flees the mob)

Yes, often they will change their mind. This is not new. Nor is it exclusive to Blizzard. Or video games. Or, well, anything.
Ysonia Sep 10th 2010 3:07AM
Amaxe, you're so getting uprated. ;)
Amaxe Sep 10th 2010 10:54AM
Hey! Stop making me look like a liar. I said downrank me!
Um...
FIRST!
Um...
QQ MOAR!
Um...
OMFG, GHOSTRIDER PROMISED ME A PONY!
(goes off to sulk in a corner)
;-)
Swifteye Sep 10th 2010 3:32PM
Are you kidding? If you got a pony from Ghostrider, it'd probably be on fire and the the Warlocks would QQ about the loss of originality. Sheesh. :p

I think, with the fact it's a lvl 60 purchase, well, they should just make it a part of the original flying price that you get in outland, now it's just available to be purchased in Azeroth too. If a player who is new to the game goes from Azeroth and just purchased the 250g flying goes and has to pay another 250g to fly in outland... seems kind of pointless and would frustrate me. So if they make that part of it, then a person wouldn't be paying, what would it be? 500g total for flying in both areas? *Gives a huff* Nope, not at lvl 60! I wouldn't have the money at that point. (This is from a new player's pov of course.)
Tbah Sep 10th 2010 7:36AM
Aaand you haven't played the game in Cataclysm level yet. A regular lvl 12 toon (fresh out from starting zone) usually has around 2g in his/her pocket. From quest rewards.
I'd wager you'll have a lot more by lvl 60 in Cata than you did in Vanilla. A lot more.
BigBadGooz Sep 10th 2010 12:45AM
Blizz: since we found out that old weather flying at 250g isn't a bad thing we have up'd the price to 2500g enjoy the gold sink
Lol like I think someone in my guild owes me some gold
Bluemain Sep 10th 2010 1:15AM
Incoming wall of words.
@noyou
I really so hope your right, and i can see your point. in recent times prices have dropped on flying and riding in general, but these are old things, as in been in the game for a while, 5000g for epic flying down to 4000g(with faction rep), makes sense 5k back in bc was a fair old chunk of gold, the other drops for riding and mounts, again makes sense, it encourages new people to stay in the game and keep giving blizzard money.
the 1000g for duel specs, was in my humble opinion, over priced, i think the first posts i saw on the plans to reduce this to 100g was met with either jubilation or outrage and demands for refunds.
But this is a new thing, and working out when it is needed, or when it will mostly be used, gives me the reason that i think the prices will rise
from 1-60 you wont be able to buy it, fair do`s with that, its not an issue, by the time your 60 your off in outlands anyway and can by regular flying, and this will keep you happy till 70
70, option to buy the epic flying 4-5k depending on rep
76, or if its an alt 68, cold weather flying, thats gonna get you to 80, up untill this point, flying in old azeroth was a mute point, it wasnt needed.
Now your 80, your back in stormwind or ogrimmar, and youve been flapping around for the last 20 level or so and your back on your horse, but now you can buy flying.
a fresh lvl 80 for the most part will have a fairly hefty bank account by this point, so yeah i can see the price rising. If id have to guess final figure, id say 1-2k
Like i said in my previous albiet much shorter post, i really hope im wrong.
