The OverAchiever: New and altered Cataclysm achievements, part 2

Existing achievements (e.g., Explore Silverpine Forest) are being changed to reflect the new sub-zones and quest hubs being added to the game, so bank on seeing a lot of new requirements. Blizzard is changing the last batch of zones as we speak. Interestingly, the new Cataclysm zones that are geographically part of existing continents (e.g., Mount Hyjal) are not part of the old world exploration achievements; they've got their own separate achievement, below.
Explore Cataclysm Again, pretty routine. New zones -- go explore! It's been yoked to the World Explorer meta-achievement, though, so new players will have more ground to cover than someone who has the achievement right now.
Eastern Kingdoms Dungeon Explorer and Kalimdor Dungeon Explorer Blizzard's toyed with the idea of forcing characters to "discover" dungeon entrances before being able to queue for them in the dungeon finder, and that's currently necessary for all 80-85 characters on the beta. You'll note that the Deadmines, Stormwind Stockades, Ragefire Chasm and Wailing Caverns aren't on these lists. Blizzard kept them off, I assume, because it was always a tall order to ask characters at the appropriate level ranges to travel across the world (and often across much higher-level areas) just to queue for a dungeon. In the case of Stormwind Stockades and Ragefire Chasm, it's also next to impossible for low-level characters to get to dungeon entrances in enemy cities. However, in the latest beta patch, Daelo (lead encounter designer) has stated that Blizzard's removed the dungeon discovery requirements for all pre-Cataclysm dungeons, after players pointed out the number of problems it caused. The achievement may stick around as an extra bonus.

Northrend Dungeon Explorer As above.
From Hell's Heart I Stab at Thee Someone's been reading some Moby Dick lately, I guess. The deal with this achievement is that there are a few enormous Whale Shark mobs making their serene way around Vashj'ir. Yes, there are more than one; they're basically the Fel Reaver/Storm Giants of Cataclysm. In a reversal from their apparent behavior earlier in the beta, they're not actually hostile to players despite appearing to be so (you can swim right through them), and they are technically even soloable if you're a class that can kite.

Working on achievements? The Overachiever is here to help! We cover everything from Glory of the Hero and Insane in the Membrane to Master of Alterac Valley and Lil' Game Hunter, and you can count on us to guide you through Azeroth's holidays and special events.

Lil' Timmy is still around, but being farmed heavily by jackasses who sell his precious white kitten in the auction houses for anywhere from around 100-250 gold (your mileage may vary).
osteenq Sep 9th 2010 5:13PM
Never mind me. I'm an idiot. I missed the "beta" part.
slythwolf Sep 10th 2010 4:55PM
I actually ran into Timmy on my first day in the beta. He was sans white kitten, though; someone's worgen must have grabbed it. I did see him right as he was returning to his spawn point.

Why does everything have to do with the assassination of Harold Lane? I thought we offed him in Northrend.
Maybe he's coming back as Deathwing's right-hand man! Oh no! He'll be so powerful he's worth not one but FIVE achievements!

Placeholder.
Aris Sep 9th 2010 5:32PM
I suspect it's just placeholder text as the final wording isn't yet completed and added to the achievement.

pffft borean tundra was merely a setback
adam_johnson Sep 9th 2010 5:22PM
i wonder if they will open up flight in azeroth prior to the expansion. I would love to survey the landscape prior to its destruction.
Eyhk Sep 9th 2010 5:25PM
Would be nice but probably not.
I doubt they would want to work to fix all the holes in the old Azeroth and then destroy it all a month later.
zpg006 Sep 9th 2010 5:35PM
I'm guessing the world will be flight capable with the pre-Cataclysm patch, now having the ability to fly without the expansion may be another story.
Skarn Sep 9th 2010 6:49PM
The Old World as it currently exists in-game is NOT flight capable. Period. Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms will not be opened to flying pre-Cataclysm simply because the world is not built for it. The game would literally break. A lot of work would have to be done to enable flying in the Old World, which is not going to happen since Blizzard just did all that work to create a New World. Sorry, but you won't get the chance to fly around the un-damaged Azeroth.
You might be able to fly around Azeroth before purchasing the expansion, but it will only be post-patch 4.0. This patch will hit shortly before the launch of Cataclysm and will include ALL the updates and changes to the Old World. Including new terrain, new NPCS, new maps, new achievements and new quests. Essentially, anything that is in the game right now that will be updated with Cataclysm will be included in the 4.0 patch and will be available without purchasing the expansion.

As cool as that would be, there's no way they'd do that if you look at it from an art department perspective. In order to allow you to fly in pre-Cataclysm Azeroth, they'd have to fix holes in the existing environment models which I imagine would be a time-consuming task, and a wasted effort considering those models will be replaced with the updated Cata ones as soon as 4.0 hits.

@Skarn
Sorry, but you're wrong, the only way in which it would "Break" would be some odd textures going from zone to zone, the world can very easily handle this as seen in a private server that used to be around specifically for the purpose of exploring vanilla WoW by allowing flying mounts in old world content.
The reason they won't let you fly is because
A) It looks really odd going from zone to zone, with weird blocky texture
B) The new inclusion of a fee to fly means its easy for them to regulate who can fly by who forks out the £30 for the xpansion, as it'll only appear trainable to those who buy it.

A few things to add:
There's also a new Going Down! place in Uldum I discovered by accident yesterday. While on the Harrison Jones' quests, there will be a moment when he says "Watch your step!" and then disappears into an entryway. When I jumped in after him, I got the achievement.
I can't confirm it, but someone in my beta guild said that the Green Hills of Stranglethorn has been SERIOUSLY nerfed. You only have to find one page.
There is a jousting quest in Hyjal, but it doesn't have anything to do with Pterodactyls. It involves jumping on a hippogryph underground and chasing around Twilight drakes and their riders. It's really tricky and a lot of people hate it.
Harrison Jones is stuck on "Tapped Out," which basically says to check back with him after the next patch. So far they're interesting, though.
I totally saw the whale shark and even took screenshots of it, but it didn't occur to me to try to kill it. lol.
SamLowry Sep 9th 2010 8:43PM
And if you don't have Going Down yet, just jump off the bridge in Shatt. Easy.
(The bridge--the one leading in the city. Not the lifts, dummy...or should I say "roadkill"?)
ambermist Sep 9th 2010 9:10PM
Oh, I've had Going Down! since the day achievements premiered in game, but you go to beta without them. Just thought it was worth mentioning since it was referred to in the post. :-)
Prances in Underpantss Sep 10th 2010 7:08AM
@ SamLowry
Actually, I got my first [Going Down] achievement (on my hunter) by jumping off the Scryer's lift.
jason_d_griffith Sep 10th 2010 1:59PM
You can still get Going Down in the night elf starting area as well as the Exodar.
Andraste Sep 9th 2010 5:52PM
The Green Hills of Stranglethorn quest is still in the game in beta... it's just a little different. I was informed they were missing ONE page... which then dropped off the second mob I killed after taking the quest. Not exactly the bag space eating horror that GHoS is on live. But enough to count for a meta achievement.
KerSplat Sep 9th 2010 5:54PM
So if you've already explored the entire world (i.e, you've already obtained all of the exploration achievements):
a) Do you need to explore all of the Eastern Kingdoms & Kalimdor zones again to re-obtain the new achievements?
b) Do you get any experience for discovering new sub-zones that didn't exist before?
Somewhat related: Have you seen any new rare mobs in EK/Kalimdor, and is there an achievement for killing them (like we have in Outland & Northrend)?
Thanks for the intro! I'm sure there will be more fun achievements to come, but this whets our appetite. :)
