Cataclysm Beta: Build 12942 warrior changes

Beta build 12942 is here, and with it, changes. Many changes. Some to talents, some to abilities; some merely to when you get them, and others to their power or functionality. It's quite a plethora of changes, and we're going to talk about them, because it's either that or I wander around muttering "worg" under my breath over and over again. Worg. It's infectious. Worg.
So let's take a look, shall we?

Arms
- Heroic Strike is now trained at level 14, up from level 12.
- Sweeping Strikes now lasts 10 seconds with a 1-minute cooldown.
- Improved Hamstring now immobilizes the target when you reapply Hamstring; still cannot occur more than once every 30/60 seconds.
Fury
- Heroic Leap now has a 8- to 40-yard range, up from 8-25 yards.
- Commanding Shout now gives 20 rage, up from 10 rage.
- Battle Shout now gives 20 rage, up from 10 rage.
- Execute is now trained at level 16, up from level 14.
- Single-Minded Fury now also lets your Heroic Strike hit with both weapons.
- Bloodsurge no longer procs from Raging Blow. Proc chance increased from 7/14/20% to 10/20/30%. Duration increased from 5 seconds to 10 seconds.
- Meat Cleaver no longer increases the damage of Cleave and Whirlwind by 10/20% at all time. Proc chance increased from 30/60% to 50/100%.
- Booming Voice is now a tier 2 talent, down from tier 5. Reduces the cooldown by 15/30 seconds and increases the rage generated by 5/10 of your Battle Shout and Commanding Shout.
- Improved Execute has been renamed to Executioner and revamped; your Execute hits have a 50/100% chance to improve your melee attack speed by 5% for 9 seconds. This effect stacks up to 5 times.
- Intensify Rage is now a tier 5 talent, up from tier 2; no longer reduces the cooldown of Bloodrage.
Single-Minded Fury gets a reliable way to hit with both weapons that's not dependent on Bloodsurge procs if the rage cost doesn't deter. Or at least it would, except that Heroic Strike's working with SMF is just a tooltip error. Bloodsurge's change keeps it from stepping on Raging Blow procs, which could lead to an overly complicated whack-a-mole during enrages. The Meat Cleaver change makes getting 2 points the way to go and keeps Whirlwind and Cleave from being desirable spam targets outside of an AoE situation. Executioner, the new version of Imp Execute, is an interesting ability. Warrior DPS might increase in execute range again with a sudden burst of melee attack speed from the attack. And the Intensify Rage nerf is basically also aimed at making Bloodrage obsolete compared to Battle and Commanding Shout for rage generation.
Protection
- Taunt is now trained at level 12, up from level 10.
All told, this is definitely a fury balancing patch. SMF will see some DPS increase, and if Bloodsurge works out with the higher proc chance, fury in general might see a slight spike. I'm surprised to see little work balancing prot's shaky threat, but we'll see how it plays.

LOL! Made me think of my main, Warog. I love my orc.
Natsumi Sep 10th 2010 5:07PM
I was optimistic about our class despite the Rage Normalization they announced, but every patch just disheartens me more and more. I may be switching mains come Cataclysm if the class continues to spiral downwards like it is.
As a side note, have they fixed Colossus Smash yet? Ever since they got it "working" it's DOUBLED the target's Armor instead of ignoring it.

For clarification:
Fury is totally borked right now with Raging blow being too RNG and stat inflation, making it terrible until you get gear at level 85 (I think it's 125 Hit rating for 1% at 85). On top of that I hate Fury's playstyle, it's not for me. I don't like Dual Wielding nor the penalties that go with it. I was forced into this tree so I could Raid ICC and I'm NEVER going Fury again, I'll go play a Paladin first.
I have absolutely no interest in tanking.... ever. I hate it, I always have. Don't get me wrong, I support my tanking brethren in the trenches, but I'm just not going to join you there because it's the only viable tree to play. Go go Gadget 30k Shield Slams!
Arms is completely useless until they fix Colossus Smash, give Arms an interrupt that doesn't require a shield or stance dancing, and provide the Warriors with our promised CC ability. Our utility was always Healing Debuff and extra bleed/physical damage. Without these changes Arms is just a pure melee DPS class that is overshadowed by the other melee DPS with actual utility.

Why did you ever choose to play a warrior in the first place? Seems like you hate everything about it.
Pyromelter Sep 10th 2010 5:52PM
Here's what I read:
"QQ my main isn't overpowered in a very buggy beta, despite the fact that all of the data coming out is showing that warriors will be very competitive from the get-go.
Also I hate my life for playing a game that forced me to play in a way that I absolutely hate. Because, you know, it was mandatory for me to be forced into playing a crappy spec of a crappy class that I hate to play."
Here's what I say:
My baby 80 warrior is and always will be fury, and fury only, everything else be damned, because an orc wielding 2 humongous 2hand axes just feels more damn sexy than lady gaga at a fox van allen party. Oh yeah and while the beta changes seem buggy as hell, they also seem like they will work pretty well once it all gets ironed out.

^^
This,
Most epic line of the day easy...

Well, they fixed Colossus Smash.
So shaddup.

@Saric
I started a warrior on my server because my guild needed tanks if it was ever going to raid MC (my server was brand new at the time, so when I rolled my warrior the highest level character on the server was 27) . I got up to 34 before the guild fell apart when the GM left to go join the other people that were level 60 on the server. At that point I had fallen in love with the Arms tree. I was Arms through Vanilla, BC, and Wrath, right up until my guild (and every other guild on the server) let me know in no uncertain terms that I would be required to spec Fury (which I hate) or Prot (which I hate and am only mediocre at anyway). I chose to raid as Fury, the lesser of 2 evils (all my alts were too undergeared for even ICC 10 without grinding for at least a week to catch up). I'm tired of not playing a spec that I like, a spec that requires me to actually pay attention.
@Pyro
Actually, I don't have access to the beta, I do however have access to the Beta FORUMS, which I keep up on, and most of the Warriors there are unhappy with the MECHANICS of the class and the fact that we desperately need a numbers pass or something as most DPS warriors can barely take on a single mob and survive, while Prot is 2 shotting things with Shield Slam. They say don't make comparisons to the other classes yet, but doing 3-6k damage per yellow attack while every other class is hitting for 10-15k makes your outlook a little bleak. If your class was broken to the point of almost unplayability you'd be ready to switch classes too.
@Aedilhild
Yeah, that came up on the beta forums about an hour after I made the post here. Thanks though.

Kaphik Sep 10th 2010 5:10PM
How is prot holding up as a leveling spec with the changes to the stance penalties?
Natsumi Sep 10th 2010 5:22PM
Prot really is the only spec that's working correctly right now. Shield slam hits like a M1A1 Abrams Tank when it crits and like a Mac truck when it doesn't. You'll actually be killing things faster than the 2 DPS specs.
Matthew Rossi Sep 10th 2010 6:15PM
Prot's pretty solid, but fury's mastery makes it competitive for soloing. Arms... well, it's still a work in progress.
CastersR4BeeItches Sep 14th 2010 1:37PM
" Arms... well, it's still a work in progress."
It always feels like this was the deal with arms, like almost made entirely of band-aids. Maybe it's just my dislike of Mortal Strike, which you take away the 25% heal reduction and it's just Boring Strike. Not that the 25% makes it all that interesting anyway.
Personally I'd rather see arms go to more stance dancing if it means making parts of arms more exciting at times. But again I kinda always felt that all warriors should have to stance dance. Other wise just rename battle stance to arms stance, berserk to fury and defensive to prot stance.
Jez Sep 10th 2010 5:14PM
Has anyone got any SMF Beta experience? I really thought 20% extra DPS wouldn't cut it, but I guess it is?
Natsumi Sep 10th 2010 5:25PM
It hasn't worked, at least it didn't as far as the last build was concerned. I haven't seen anything on the Beta forums yet on the new build.
RetPallyJil Sep 10th 2010 5:17PM
I got my beta invite Monday. I still haven't been able to copy characters or log on.
If I have any more fun, I'll cancel my account.
Natsumi Sep 10th 2010 5:23PM
Over the Beta? Seriously? Well.... You ARE a pally, so I guess that fits.
Tom Sep 10th 2010 5:42PM
Man.
You're really good at taking screenshots, Rossi.

"Why would you use Heroic Leap, so many have asked? The answer is: It has a longer range. No idea if this is going to remain or not, but it would definitely make the ability more attractive."
In what way is it more attractive? You can put more space between you and your healers? You can get a greater head start against enemies you are running away from? You can zoom past someone else to steal a node from them?
Other than running from stuff, when is heroic leap ever going to be more attractive than the other 3 charges?
