Cataclysm Beta: Mining and herbalism give experience

Blizzard added another way to earn some experience with the latest patch for Cataclysm. You now earn experience when both gathering from mining and herbalism nodes. This is being reported about 4,000 experience for herb nodes in Wintergrasp at level 80. However, these do suffer from the same experience reduction that lower level quests are hit with. As an example, a level 83 player mining a copper node earns 5 experience but earns a couple of thousand from a titanium node.

So I could queue for Rated BG's and farm Ore in between each round and level up like hotcakes AND profit?
win win win
Goodk4t Sep 13th 2010 11:01PM
@Netherscourge: Nope, because rated BG's are for level 85 only and you need a premade team, you can't queue solo. BUT, you could queue for the normal BGs while farming, same as you do nowadays.

Hopefully this doesn't cause some kind of odd bias where there are no skinners anymore... ever.

It's prolly to balance skinning since you need to kill stuff to skin so it = exp, and the amount of stuff you need to kill for enough leather for one piece prolly equals to the 4000exp you get from a Wintergrasp herb (As they yield better/more herbs than others, usually).

Why ISN'T skinning included?

Never mind that last comment, he beat me to it

I think the reason skinning doesnt get the xp change is probably because if you're leveling your skinning as you level, then you get xp from killing the mobs already. This isn't to bring down skinning, but to bring herb and mining up to par with skinning when it comes to xp.

I only hope it doesn't change the perception. Some players may feel as if they don't have to do as much work to gain the exp if they pick up mining or herbalism, free exp, as it were. This is obviously not true for a number for reasons, one of which of course being that you often have to kill mobs to gain access to a node. Otherwise I think it's a good idea, I just hope it doesn't cause a change in the perception of skinning's value.

It is worth noting that these numbers are not final and are very likely to change.

Shaddup, voice of reason.

Is it because you actually stop questing / killing stuff to go mine a node ? Is it so people will not feel that gathering stuff will gimp their xp / hour ? Oh well ... ok then, i guess. Personnally i just refuse to "rush rush rush till i'm 85" and actually enjoy leveling my professions, but i mean, sure, why not.
Also, the "chinese" farmers will love it.

Think about it for 2 seconds how much is 4,000 experience to a level 80? It's about what you get for killing a mob, I assume this is the goal and it will not break anything its just a nice little bonus plenty of other games use (see my bellow comment).
Darky Sep 13th 2010 9:21PM
Sorry that was harsh (I'm tired*) but you get the general gist of what I'm trying to say. :)
* not that this is any real excuse
lolikitty Sep 13th 2010 10:12PM
No biggie, as i said, i like to take my time while leveling , some people prefer reaching level cap as fast as possible, so good for them, i was merely adding my 0.2 cents :)
Also, no way in hell i'm changing prof just for that tiny bonus, i've been collecting recipes since forever, so there's no way in hell i'm parting with my beloved collection (enchant / tailoring better keep bringing sweet bonuses to us raiding clothies or else)

I'm glad they adopted this system :D. Makes perfect sense imo; plenty of other MMOs have had this implemented without any negative consequences.
Jean_Luc_Picard Sep 13th 2010 9:22PM
Hmm, skinning may be replaced as a leveling prof...
kooda Sep 14th 2010 2:41AM
.. why? if everyone had the same mentality as you there would be no leather meaning bigger market, you go out of your way to get nodes, skinning the exp comes from killing the mob.
Jean_Luc_Picard Sep 14th 2010 10:31AM
I generally don't have to go out of my way and kill extra mobs when leveling for skins, the number of beasts one has to kill via questing is usually more then sufficient to keep skinning up so I would be killing those mobs anyways.
Arrowsmith Sep 13th 2010 9:20PM
What? No love for skinners? That makes me a bit sad, to be honest, since I'll be leveling to 85 next to a Herbalist.
Darky Sep 13th 2010 9:23PM
It's most likely because you already get experience for killing the mob; giving additional experience would be over kill, because people would just take skinning so they get more xp as they level up without really having to go out of their way.
