Addon Spotlight: Grab bag 2
Addon Spotlight focuses on the backbone of the WoW gameplay experience: the user interface. Everything from bags to bars, buttons to DPS meters and beyond -- your addons folder will never be the same. This week, raaaaaaandom addons!
You are cordially invited to another wonderful Addon Spotlight Grab bag extravaganza! Next week, I'll be talking about the Cataclysm in-game ability notification system that Blizzard is working on. That would have been this week, if my beta wasn't screwing up and I didn't get all the pictures and potentially video required for a proper post for you fine readers. Instead, you get a grab bag of fun, useful and downright crucial addons that might not be the biggest guys of the bunch, but they definitely do ... something. Plus, "grab bag" is fun to say.
Let me reach into my bag of random addons and pull out some special selections for you! If this column had sounds, you'd hear a rustling noise, followed by some crashing, glass shattering and maybe an air horn.
RedDrake
Cataclysm is coming, so get those achievements from Wrath dungeons as soon as possible before no one wants to run them ever again! RedDrake is an achievement addon that reminds you, upon entering a heroic or raid instance, what achievements you are missing for meta-mount achievements, such as Reins of Red Proto-drake or Reins of the Bloodbathed Frostbrood Vanquisher.
RedDrake requires little to no customization and is active once you install it. If you've already completed certain meta achievements, RedDrake will not display any information, staying neatly out of your way. Hopefully, this addon can help you remember when you've got a shot at some meta achievements before the world is torn apart.

Currency
For those of you who do not use an LDB bar, TitanPanel or other bar mod, Currency provides an alternative to common currency addons that appear in LDB formats. Currency's simple task is to show you in a quick list from your minimap of your current currency amounts. The addon shows you, in a simple list, how many emblems, honor points and other currencies that you have. Currency is a simple, light addon that provides a quick look at your currency without the two-click solution to get to the currency tab. Seriously, two clicks? That's so 2004.

HatTrick
Tekkub is one of my favorite addon authors, and it's no surprise that he has come up with this seamlessly integrated and awesome addon that is exactly what I needed. HatTrick moves the toggles for your helm and cloak graphics to the player paperdoll frame instead of deep in the display options. The addon disables the ability to use the display option checkboxes, but really, when they've been moved to the paperdoll, you'll never look back.
How can you not love this addon? On-the-fly checkbox selection of your helm and cloak. I love it, and I want Tekkub to have my LUA babies.

Addon Mailbag time! Woooo!
My other suggestion is Mumble. I cannot give more praise to Mumble, not only because the sound quality is better and the software features voice normalization (everyone is brought to a common sound level no matter how loud they output), but because of the awesome overlay that just works out of the box. The overlay lives anywhere you want on the screen, has tons of options and can light up the people who are currently talking in your Mumble chat. It's rough to get everyone to switch over, but oh man, is it awesome.
See you all next week!
Addons are what we do on Addon Spotlight. If you're new to mods, Addons 101 will walk you through the basics; see what other players are doing at Reader UI of the Week. If there's a mod you think Addon Spotlight should take a look at, email mat@wow.com.

Thanks for the email, Mrs. Hompa. There are a few solutions for seeing who is talking on Vent that I know of. First, while it's not the most economic solution, you could get one of those nifty G15 keyboards from Logitech. The G15 has a small LCD screen that has a Ventrilo plugin built in that can show you who is transmitting at the time. It was cool back when we used Vent. The other option is enabling the Ventrilo overlay, but to be completely honest, I tried it once and it never worked, and just like Lot, I never looked back.Hello hello,
I've been raiding a while with my guild, and while I really like everyone and have had numerous conversations with many guildies in chat, I have a really hard time recognizing voices over Vent! I play on a little laptop, and while everyone tells me I should play in windowed mode so I can see the Vent window, I just can't stand how cluttered and small everything is when I do. I have been made fun of (and probably hurt the feelings of my guildmates) when someone calls out an Innervate or a command and I have to say, "... who, exactly?" I'm like this in real life, too -- I'm a big advocate of name tags! My question is, is there an addon that exists where the names of who is talking in Vent show up in game? That would be so helpful!

Thanks for the email, Malozing. Your best bet for low CPU and memory usage addons are any addons that have individual modules that you can turn off. Skada is a great example of an addon that works well with modules, as you can turn off the specific types of data that are displayed and parsed for you. Of the addons you've listed, I don't see anything that screams "CPU destroyer." Rather, stay away from addons that are graphics-intensive or just plain huge. Carbonite is a good example of a addon that can kill your performance. Stay away from the bloated guys, and you'll find most addons won't give you too many problems.Hi Mathew,
Quick question: What are some low-CPU and -memory add-ons? I play on an older laptop, I currently use Skada, Grid, Decursive, DBM, Flototem Bar and Auctioneer.
I think you already answered this in one of your mailbags, but I can't remember which one. If I am right, feel free to point me in the right direction.
Thanks. =) I love your articles.

Addon Control Panel is fantastic!
Thanks for making me aware of it.

@Pyromelter,
I MY LORD, I LOVE YOU MAN! I have been trying to find something that does this for a very long time. Just never knew what those messages where called so...
Gen. Question: I have seen a video where someone had all of the scrolling dmg text moved to the left side of their screen and it was kind of on a wheel like motion so it rolled up from bottom and left on top, on like a 3 inch circle. Anyone know what this addon is or some way to move the combat text so it is not scrolling across the main view area?
I have disabled it entirely before but always end up turning it back on for one reason or another.

lol, just noticed i replied to the wrong comment... sorry

I'm gonna toss out a random UI suggestion that people might not know about:
pError http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/perror.aspx
"pError is a simple addon to filter out spam in the UIErrorsFrame.
Its designed to be robust and easy to use."
and
eError http://wow.curse.com/downloads/wow-addons/details/eerror.aspx
"Simple, VERY lightweight add-on that hides the red error text spam. No options, no frills. Simply type /error to toggle on and off."
What do these do exactly? They limit the spam of red text on the top middle of your screen. The things that say like "That spell is not ready yet" or "Out of range" or "You must be facing your target." eError removes ALL messages; this is good in a raid, but may not be good in general, because it also removes the little counters and messages for quest objectives. pError is more selective, you can use it to filter out which messages you want to let through or hide. The other benefit is you never have to use those long strings in your macros that say like "/disable UIErrorsframe"

I, uh, just bound the currency pane to it's own key. It's pretty easy, just using the default UI. >_>

Recently I have been using MoveAnything to well move anything. I had it to where everything was postioned where I wanted it but now, the addon resets whenever i switch toons or log out and I have tried deleting and reinstalling and its just bugging me, that I cant move the things I want and have them stay anymore.

Awww man! From the post title I thought you were finally going to cover the great GrabBag2 addon.
Oh well, maybe next time.

I love mumble personally,
Not only does it auto-balance volumes and all those other wonderfull things, it doesn't require you to purchase it if you have more then 8 people on the server.
The only issue we have with it is trying to get other people to use it because everyone is so set in using vent that if you suggest something else they seem to think your stupid.
Jesse Felt Sep 17th 2010 5:59PM
Werd. Before I was in the guild I am in now our small FnF guild used mumble because we didn't want to pay for a server, but you literally cannot buy the vent server software unless you are setting up massive servers for tens of thousands of users. Once we started using it we were very impressed with how user friendly and high quality it was. The normalization is nice (though not always 100% effective at reducing loudmouths or pumping up mice) but the thing that really got me was that the bandwidth usage was way better than Ventrilo and the sound quality was immense!
Of course there is the overlay which I used faithfully until our little guild died and I joined a "real raiding guild" and switched to vent.
The only thing I found negative with mumble was that occasionally it would kind of crap out and you had to restart it. You would be able to ehar others but they could not hear you, or you couldn't hear anyone but they could hear you. Occasionally you would have to restart the server as well, as it would cause similar problems for other users.
Sicadastra Sep 16th 2010 8:34PM
Is the Mumble overlay Mac friendly? I know the Vent one is not.
On that note, has anyone used a G15 Mac-side? Logitech is usually pretty good about intra-OS-ification.
Smellykent Sep 17th 2010 4:42AM
While I can't answer your question about the G15's compatability with Macs, the word "intra-OS-ification" is just pure win! =)
rask Sep 17th 2010 5:15PM
As of Mumble 1.2.2, you need to modify your command to launch WoW to get the overlay working on a Mac, but it's possible (details in the Mumble website's FAQ). I'm told it's easier to turn on that feature when the next version (1.2.3) comes out.

Tekkub is my hero. Blizz should really hire him/her, as they constantly are coming up with little adjustments that are great quality of life improvements.
Lemons Sep 18th 2010 2:24AM
Personally I feel that Tekkub addons never come with enough options. Maybe that's a selling point for some, but for me it's just frustrating. They remind me a lot of macs in that if they already do what you want them to do they're great, but if you want any options beyond that they just don't exist. It's an effort to make everything really slick and compact, but at the same time it takes a way a bit of freedom and utility you'd have otherwise.
Tekkub Sep 18th 2010 6:07AM
I have my hands in about as deep as I'm comfortable with Blizzy. Besides, I love my current job and wouldn't give it up to be forced to move to CA.
Lemons, sit back and consider, do you really NEED those options? The Paradox of Choice. I think designing so that options aren't needed is much better than throwing a wall of configuration options at the user.
Vilhelm Sep 17th 2010 12:58AM
For the person having trouble seeing who is talking in vent:
ThinkGeek carries a small usb monitor that you can apparently just plug in and use. So, you could have your Vent open on this second monitor and see who is talking.
kvanje Sep 17th 2010 2:52AM
The secret to getting the Vent overlay to work while running in full screen on Vista and Win7 is to set WoW to windowed mode, but maximized.
As far as light addons, Auctioneer is quite the memory hog. I personally use Addon Control Panel to switch between two sets of addons: a minimal one for raiding and an expanded one for soloing/heroics. That way I can keep Auctioneer and such in the latter only.

http://www.thekingpin.net/voice_overlay.php
Voice Overlay is a little program you run besides Vent, and it makes a nice little notice of who's speaking on vent, directly over your wow game :)
Just in case you don't want to
1. dish out money for the g15 keyboard (I have it though, and do recommend it!)
or
2. Have everyone change to a different chat program that usually won't work well if you need pugs etc etc
Zaniel Sep 17th 2010 12:35PM
^^This
while not an addon, very easy to use...small, and lightweight. Works great.
