I don't think joystiq would sell to the farmers directly, but I had presumed they sold the list to a marketing company, who then sold it.
As far as the random email concept - if that were the case, my wife's email would be getting hit as well - and she has none.
@tokkar - While I have no doubt to Activision's desire for money - I almost doubt it because of the massive subscriber revenue that comes in, why do something that might risk getting new players?
